as the title says i want to buy a new ps2 i am completely new at consoles so plzz tell me the approx price of a ps2 with 2 controlers and are there any specification that i should look at? i guess some chips are put in to play pirated cds on ps2 rit? or something like that

The price of the Ps2 is between 5.5k-6.5k. Currently the slim version is being sold. The PS2 comes with one controller and a 8MB memory card. Additional controller should cost around Rs 500.
Games cost around the same range as pc games. Most of the shops sell the modded version of the console so purchase the PS2 from an authorized dealer if you do not want a modded piece.

I don't think modded PS2's have any problems.. I heard probs of modded xbox 360, or xbox.. but never heard about PS2 problems.. My friend using modded PS2 since 4 years.. No problems @ all...

The new modded PS2 would cost you around 7.5k.You can get the latest SCPH-9006 series which is available in most retail stores.Additional controller can be purchased for Rs.350-500(Fake one) & Rs.850-1,000 (Original one).Add to that a Fake Magic Gate 8MB memory card would cost you around Rs.350 & a original will be around Rs.600-800.The prices would always vary from the store you plan to get it from.Whatever you do go for the original Dual Shock Analog controller & not the fake one.The former will last for a long button mashing sessions & the latter would screw up anytime.Be sure you know how to identify the fake from the original one.Else the dealers sometime replace the original one in the box with a fake controller too.Since the box is never seal packed we never know what's been done inside. So be careful.

What is the diffrence between a modded and a retail version of ps2?
I'll have to quote myself from my response at Digit Forum:

Couple of them. You can play any region DVD's on the modded one whereas the original one will only play the region which it resides to.So say an original PAL PS2 console won't be able to read an NTSC US/J DVDs.Also you can connect your portable HDD to run games off the HDD on a modded one.Though the procedure is very complicated & needs a lot of luck too.You can load certain exploits like Gameshark & ARmax to run your saves or get access to cheat codes on a modded console.

The MRP of PS2 at sony showrooms is 6.9k. So 6.5k is achievable for a modded one.
It is possible but modding can cost anywhere between Rs.500 to 1k.So add that to the cost of the original console & it should surely be higher than that.

Also the SONY showrooms do not stock the new 9XXXX series but they give the old one which has a separate power adaptor. Correct me if i am wrong ?
The last i saw was in Croma, Malad where they had the old PS2 ?

Officially I don't think Sony India has recieved this(SCPH-9006) series of Playstation 2 in stock. The retails stores which provide these series have got it pre-modded from abroad. That is why it is sold at a relatively cheaper price here.Croma sells the SCPH-7xxx series which costs Rs.6,999 as per it's official price.

The modded consoles come in the grey market, without paying any taxes/customes/excise, hence cheaper.

Even after modding, they are cheaper than the showroom price.

I was referring to the local consoles being modded. The already modded ones can vary in their price range. No doubt they are imports but that means the dealer can have his take at the price.I had found a modded SCPH-9006 model for 6.5k when I was hunting for my PS2.When I peeked into the box I realised that the default controller which is supposed to be an original one was swapped with a fake one.Hence I backed out instantly.Got it for 7.5k with a years service warranty from the store that I got it from.:hap2:

The best idea is NOT TO BUY controllers and mem cards. Instead..buy the main unit with the power adapter.

The controller and the mem card are sold in a pack ....get them from the showroom.

But still I like that PS2 still rocks. I wish I could finish my GOW2.

You still haven't completed it yet? Man without that the entire GOW experience falls flat. When GOW 2 ended I was like what the hell? Is that it? Ah come on.It's a pity that GOW 3 is a PS3 exclusive.Wish they could bring it across to PS2.This console still hasn't given up yet. It's like that saying "The show ain't over till the fat lady sings" :ohyeah:

@Amit: Croma has multiple showrooms setup across Mumbai.I see your location is in Delhi so I'm not really sure about that place.Try looking up on their official site may be that might help.
