The CPU has to do hard work when gaming at low resolutions, whereas on higher resolutions the GPU is the workhorse (it doesnt mean that cpu stops working at high reso, it works less compared to gpu

Radeon HD 5850 vs Radeon HD 6850 – Performance Comparison Benchmarks @ Hardware Compare

which 1 for me 5850/460/6850 or any other ... not in a hurry though

Yes you are right...

5850>6850 in performance in games without tessellation... 6850>5850 in performance when it comes to tessellation and DX11 titles.

5850>6850 in power consumption and temps.. (6850 has low power consumption)

So best choice is 6850... I never think about GTX460 ( power hungry card, performance is almost similar to 6850)

Mostly yes, the GPU is the prime factor here. But there should be a nice balance of CPU vs. GPU too.

They are just using official TDPs.

Here

HIS Radeon HD 6850 1 GB Review - Page 26/32 | techPowerUp

As you see, except Furmark, it's almost same

Has the CPU got anything to do with the resolution?

lower the resolution, more the dependence on CPU and less on GPU, and vice versa

the interesting thing about GTX460 is that, its an bit of old card in compare to 6850 but still holds well against it and shows better FPS in DX11 like unigine heaven 2,difference vary in different review site, but in most of the site it beat 6850,,what I understand that 6850 is a current solution but not that much ready for future DX11 at 1920X1080 resolution with high settings,to be future proof, you need a notch higher card like 6870 o 69XX series may be.

As per TomsHardware.com, even Radeon HD 5770 (Radeon HD 6770) give "Great 1920x1200 performance in most games",check this link

In this review, see the power consumption,,6850 is 2-3 watts lower than 5850 in all the three stages(low, avg, peak, blue ray),only major difference in maximum ( i dont know what is the difference between maximum and peak here)// If i got a super deal like 6-7k deal for an used 5850 with 1-2 yrs of warranty I will go for it ,instead of spending 8.5k+ for a new 6850

HD 6850 can be overclocked to match HD 6870 performance. . HD 6850 and HD 6870 has same reference design , only overclocked one.. isn't it ?

No bro... HD6870 has got 1120 stream processors and HD6850 has got 960 stream processors.. They are not the same cards...

I guess its coz there haven't been any significant improvement in game gfx either since Crysis that the midrange cards too are able to handle highest settings at hd resolutions. Makes me feel that cards like the 5770 would be more than enough for casual gaming even after a couple of years coz the development is slowed down due to consoles.

actually for future games we should not consider Crysis as a benchmark,,i believe future games will more of unigine heaven or metro 2033 or bc2 kind of game,,so 6870 is kind of a futureproof for atleast 1-2 yrs from now with a 3ghz+ quad procey to play in HD, if u lowered ur resolution cards like 5770 can easily sustained ( considering you will not check fps like a maniac more than playing the game, can tweak the setting here n there)- since next generation console yet not announced we cann't say anything//

my 4850 performs well in sub HD resolution like 1440*900- so peole who are still with 19-17 inch monitor and with those range for gpu need not to upgrade their systems

6870 cannot go for two years no matter how much u tweak the card. You would need a minimum of 6950 if u intend to go for 2 years and even that is pushing it.

Uningine is good, i mean really good. But if Crytek developed the CryEngine 3 with PC in mind it would've blown Uningine out of the water like nobody's business.

As far the next gen console, lets just say Uncharted 4 is gonna be the most visually stunning game ever to grace the human eyes and thats just the start of what could only be described as "VG Renaissance".

For the next 2 years, HD6950 is the card for you. Just like HD5850 was when it launched September 2009, I got it in October, it's July 2011, I can still max out almost every game, at 1920x1080, and I'm pretty sure this will continue till year end (Battlefield 3 releases!!! fingers crossed!!!)

HD6950 GB costs 13.5k, 2GB costs 15.5k

The performance gains in heavy tessellation scenes is nearly 2x.

Gaming wise, 1.2-1.5x
