Storage Solutions hdd data recovery

I have read that RAID 1 slows down the working process a wee bit - RIGHT ? I am sure this slowing down may not even be noticeable.

The writes are supposed to slow down and reads the opp. Not that it matters to me much as I run my OS on RAID0 :)

@others using syncback, I'll give it a try. Reason I was using Toy was I needed a syncing util only post purchase of my EEEPC (courtesy techie_007) and a google search for a free x64 sync util popped it up:).

Not always easy to keep multiple drives (250X4).

Well, simplest is to backup everything. For 1 Tb of data, keep 2 Tbs of space on 2 X 1Tb drives.

Well that was merely a suggestion, the point i was trying to make was to have atleast two(or multiple) HDs...

Be it 250GB X 4 , 500GB X2 or 1TB X 2 !

So you won't lose all ur data in one go if anything should happen !

@Udit

Any luck with the recovery?

For Linux users, backup to an external storage
(either over network or a USB/eSATA drive) using rsync.
See the man page for various options.
Frequently used options for me are "-av" "--delete".

Actually I meant something different, that you should keep your DATA COPIED, not split across volumes. So the same data on 2 drives, ONLY way to save it in case of a crash.

In case data is split across multiple volumes, you still loose half of it :p

But if you keep a copy, you need to be really unlucky to have an internal and an external fail at the same time ;)

@dafreaking: Actually, RAID in such cases can do more harm than good. Think over it. Your data may span over multiple volumes, but all those volumes get changed at the same time. SO any accidental deletion/virus attack leaves all your m,ultiple copies i nthe same state and ur left without data.

Better to have on-demand sync of data. That way you are protected against Virus attacks/accidents while deleting stuff.

sad to hear that Udit. hope you find a solution soon.

this is a disadvantage of having a large hdd. bigger the size, more the data you lose due to crash.

+1 for keeping copies of data on another drive. for important stuff you should also burn them on dvds.

Oh ok.I did mean storing different kinds of data on diff. HDs...

You can copy a virus without realizing too...

Also if one downloads soo much crap, you deserve dem worms :p

On a more serious note. If your careful, you would not be copying viruses in the first place. I haven't used an anti-virus for years now. Just a firewall. If you know what your downloading, there shouldn't be any problem.

Ahhhh !!! YOU must be following the advise of my OLD Chartered Accounted.... when I asked him not to go on the NET without an antivirus installed, he seriously asked me if he could use FLIT to protect his computer from the viruses. (Should I have told him to place a Goodnight bottle inside his computer case ??) :eek:hyeah:

One would have to be pretty isolated to be safe from virus attacks without any AV.

Since after the XP worm thingy before SP1, I have never encountered a virus attack online. On the other hand, almost each and every pen drive brought over from work or friends have been infected since past 2 years and more.

HAHAHAHAH!!!... I'm just very careful....prevention is better than cure....

Never used an anti-virus because always had a super low spec system, so the AV Suite would end up using all the resources..and never used stuff like LimeWire, etc...

Yeah...So I don't plug in anyone's pendrives into my home system...

in 75k some1 will dload all that data for u n also will help u recreate n back that data.

last time my uncle's hdd crashed n i got 2-5k quote range from the local repair center (now LG service center)...at that time there was a customer willing to recover his data...around 2-3TB...worked for some studio n wanted all data back.. that guy quoted him 10-15k range...

dunno abt that customer bt i did not get my data recovered.

n i dont thnk any1 will guaranty u complete data recovery.

u may wanna contact ur hdd manufacturer/service center n c if they can do anything.

There are many softwares . Try them but be careful, dont copy any thing to any of the drives. The older data will get erased
