Storage Solutions HDD Prices may go up.. Edit: Gone up

WD didn't have 2GB EARX drives in stock for RMA, they offered me EARS. I kicked up a row, they're sending me a 2TB Black.

PS - Rahul, did you get married on 11.11.11 at Juhu?

Did you put up an argument that EARX was new & faster 'coz EARS is actually slightly more faster than EARX.

(You meant 2TB)

For those expecting ssds to drop price, first, ssds aren't exactly cheap and efficient to make, which is why they cost so much in the first place. And as demand for ssds increases due to lack of hdds, unless production can match the demand, prices will only increase. If hdds were not affected, natural tech progress would bring down ssd prices, but it doesn't look very likely in the current scenario.

Portable HDD prices are insane here in Singapore! WD Passport 1TB is around $300 here. That is a almost close to Rs. 12,000! Thankfully I really don't need one right now, but hope the prices do drop in a couple of month's time.

When did you give your drive for RMA? I need to get one of my WD for replacement. Unsure of how it will go with the current shortage situaton.

Sent from my lazy couch.

Ask for the Samsung models bro, they should be priced less.

There is also this one : Western Digital 2TB 3.5 inch External Hard Drive . Buy Best Western Digital 2TB 3.5 inch External Hard Drive at Lowest Price Online

Now, I cannot decide between Seagate and WD. My gut tells me to go with seagate but I am afraid if it will have compatibility issues with WD TV. And yes even I feel this is one of the best deals in present scenario. The reason these 2TB drives cost so less is probably because they are from old stock.

Homeshop18 WD 2TB one is Out of Stock

If i am not mistaken WD is worst hit.

Hence it is obvious even if one gets its drive it wont be easy for warranty and soon we will see pile up of thread regarding same.

Am i right?

I'm in real need of buying HDD both internal and external should I hold on for more couple of days? How long do you all think it will take for the prices to come down again?

At least 6~9 months. If you are from mumbai, lemme know, a friend of mine plans to sell his slightly used 1TB ext HDD for 4.5K. He will not ship it.

^ Any source of that least 6-9 months prediction?

It should take at least that much time for supply to reach pre flood levels. The timeline was mentioned in some news articles, with most saying it would take at least 9 months. If possible, will post the links, else google for them.

All this is getting to be an unforgettable nightmare for each of us.... when will it end? Or should we brace ourselves to this new reality - prices that ARE real today..... (forget about the past when 1 TB was 2.75K).... Think of Gold 10 gms, just 6 months ago!!!

I think adjusting to the new prices is more sensible than expecting miracles. Sometimes $hit happens that even beats man-made disasters like the 08 recession. PCs have been getting cheap as hell lately. So this one component could be viewed as a kind of trade-off.
