After the recent incident of molestation of NE girl, that was the first thing to come to my mind. That we cry foul when racially discriminated against abroad, but would not think twice before using words like Gujju, Punju, Madrasi etc.

Those might still not attract immediate raising of the eyebrow because for the avg Indian that type of name calling is not racism and gets inherently rooted, but words like Chinki and calling them absurdly by referring to momos etc seems hideous.

The tech community generally is well connected. works in multicultural environment and interacts with foreign clients as well, so exposure and awareness might be bit more i believe. Just wanted to see how many people really deem using the word Chinki fine when that word is pretty much offensive to NE Indians and overall as well.

Not a poll to allow ur ids to be divulged so feel free to be honest here.

Plz do share any experience when we have made Indians from NE state feel like an alien so that mistake might be stopped and avoided, but do vote pls.

And a simple request, try to abandon words like Chinki, Surd, Negro etc.

it depends on context. If there is malicious intent it is bad. Even in western countries, words like nigger, negro are ok when spoken in jest between friends who understand intent.

describing someone as a negro or chinki is not necessarily bad as well. we have been bought up in times where racial discrimination was nearly out of the picture. its more or less a word that we use to stereotype and not degrade.

for example - all south indians are madrasis. (short dark rice eating )
all north easterns are chinkis. ( yellow slit eyes )

acts of horror are exactly what they are. words do not mean anything unless there is intent.

I do. :ashamed:

Never knew that it was a sort of a racist word though. Proudly use others as well such as mallu, madrasi, gujju etc. :P

Not in the bad context ofc. :)

Very few people can understand and use it in non abusive context.

Problem arises when the word gets rooted in the working language and the avg Indian cant really understand when to use it how not to use words for profiling.

It has been of utter disbelief how people go about using the words in front of people who would not be comfortable even while putting a brave front and plastering a fake smile even.

I am an Assamese and have faced it a lot 'chinki', 'kancha', 'nepali'.... Even my sis faced it a lot as some asshole tried to give her the nick chinki .... See anyone from NE or even a jap or chinese typical response is hey ur clan maybe I should go talk to them

Typical example : Are you from Nepal ? No I am an Indian from Assam

Some are dumb enough to even ask where is that :@ .....

The animosity arises from the negative views by people who can't take the stylish ways of the NE people(I am from Kolkata and in my colg there is a quite substantial no. of them). So I can say that the word chinki is used more often derogatorily compared to gujju, paiya, bong, etc.nothing pisses off these guys more than being called chinki in the face.coz how many times is a South Indian teased openly on the road by being called 'kallu'?I think this animosity is seated deep within the society due to plain jealousy of the NE guys almost all of whom have either great dressing sense/good music sense and can play instruments /are superb athletes and sportsmen(In my colg we never used to play basketball with them as we always got our asses kicked:P)

i have used it , i have also heard me being called a madrasi in the most remote of villages in UP , but was amazed that i spoke hindi very well , did i feel that was racist , no sir , thats how they term people from south india,
its just a phrase , i dont feel anything racist about it

In our group, we do call one chap Nepali. But he's from Punjab and doesn't even look anything like that. It's only because one of our dumb teachers in college had asked him that once! :P

Yeah, but I'm very careful about using these stereotype names freely in public or otherwise. Some people are cool whereas some might take offense.. you never know, right?!

I make sure I never call people from North east India by that name.It surely as hell offensive. Why insult my own countrymen?Only if it's friends then it's ok I guess. But in general public.. No.
If you call Taiwanese, or chinese ppl by that name, I wouldn't care less. But I would definitely request you not to call people who belong to our own country by that name.

Maybe we should also ban all santa banta jokes as well.......considering they are not really respectful to the Sardar community.

Everything depends on context I believe. Used in a fun setting, among friends, such words are just that - words. Nothing more, nothing less.

well i have a very good friend who is NE...and we do use to call him that but never had any malice behind that...plus he don't have any issue with it..never called anyone unknown though

proud to be a mallu :D

madrassi - maybe not :ashamed: wrong city, heck, state :P

who's a chinki?

EDIT: got it . never knew :ashamed:

My best friend is Nepali, and i know he DOES feel discrimination, heck back 5 years when i met him i called him Nepali and what not myself, but i don't do that anymore.

I'm a Sikh myself, and it mostly doesn't bother me, but sometimes it does. Every country has a "class" which they make fun of, in india they are Sardars and Biharis, and like in the USA they are Blondes.

The girls of NE face worse treatment compared to the guys....

Just cause they dress more liberally they are labelled as easy and loose characters and harrassed... My relatives and friends face it a lot on the streets and even in work place... It its hell for them when they get harassed specifically cause they know you have come outside your native place to study or work and know that most people wont bat an eyelid to such harassment...

My heart goes out to the people of Assam

said Jawaharlal Nehru in a broadcast to the people of Assam as the Chinese troops were marching in in 1962. The Chinese troops backed up for unknown reasons but that does not betray the fact that he said goodbye to Assam and almost all NE states..... Cant blame the people for feeling like they get stepmotherly treatment from the Centre... Although situation has changed a lot in the past 30 years

If I don't call a Chinki Hot Chick Chinki then would I call her? :P

Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Vietnamese Hot Chick? Naa too much headache

Chinki defines all Oriental hot chicks together

So much easier

It's just a word lol

Chinki.....??? :S

I have a dog (female) on my farm whom I named Chinki (She was born when Munnabhai MBBS was released & hence the name!!!)......

But before today, I didn't even know that it can be considered offensive...... :S

Even otherwise, calling abusive names is really stupid..... U are actually spoiling ur own name in calling names to others.....!!! :P
