Ipad pro with mini led display upto 16 GB RAM launched

So while we were discussing the need of extra processing power, a big update from lumafusion came. Very soon lumafusion will have the ability to edit videos directly from external drive thanks to thunderbolt port and M1 chip. This is a big news for all. Basic users don't need to buy a higher capacity model and can settle with 128 GB model while pros are no longer limited by 2 TB size and they can edit their 3-4 TB files on ipad.

What's next? Apple should kill Mac Pro too because it is expensive and its pro softwares are even more expensive.
Ahaha not like that, I meant it in a more positive manner :p
Allow me to elaborate:
There's rumours about a 14" Macbook coming soon, with an HDMI port, SD slot and I think even a type a port. So I think what could happen is that Macbooks could become relegated to the professionals who actually need to run specialised software packages, and those who absolutely cannot work on an ipad. In such a scenario, the entry level laptop, which has been the Macbook air for the longest time, could get replaced by the iPad Pro series. Though I don't think this is Apple's immediate intention, this doesn't seem too far off the realm of possibility either - with the new ipads having literally the same chips as the latest macs, I don't see why iPadOS will blur the lines between Mac and ipad even more, to a point where the iPad, once bundled with an in-box keyboard, would probably become the go-to entry level Apple computing device instead of the Air.
And I would really like this combo - I would personally ditch my gaming laptop and iPad in favor of a single device (with the caveat that I still have a gaming desktop tho), and I think the iPad Pro would anyway fill all my needs except for VR and gaming. For the people who need to run Mac-based apps (which should be coming to iPad sooner than later since same chip in both devices now), there will be the 14" and 16" Macs, iPad Pro for most others :)

What's next? Apple should kill Mac Pro too because it is expensive and its pro softwares are even more expensive.
This is something which needs to be killed not Mac pro and its software.

Air is their best selling Mac device, why would they kill their golden goose for an iPad. I know people who are choosing Air even over 16 MBP because of portability. iPad Apps are coming to MacBook anyways, tomorrow iPad can come with M1X too but that does not mean it will become a Mac suddenly because hardware is not the limitation anyways. Most of the use case mentioned in the thread can be done on cheapest iPad too, still imo this is an overkill product for 99% of users. 1% who are expecting that iPad can replace an actual Computer, I really like their optimism and even wish that could happen someday.

You are still missing the point.
The base iPad (which actually represents extremely good VFM) will continue to remain their best selling tab.

For a smaller subset of users however , it makes a considerable amount of sense...

a) People who truly want/need a truly powerful tab - and there are several use cases that justify one
b ) People who will couple this with a KB folio for using it as very usable ultra portable for anywhere between 50- 90% of their needs

You are right in that neither a or b can use it as a straight up Mac/ PC replacement - but bear in mind that almost everyone considering to buy an iPP (this gen or earlier) would be buying it as a companion device and not their sole computer

Can't agree more, people who generally buy such expensive add ons already have basic stuff like real computer with them. Still I think there are very few cases not more than 1% perhaps that may warrant a Pro over cheaper models. Personally I think this will be a brilliant Netflix machine for those who want to enjoy movies on the go and that's where the use case ends at least in my scenario.

iPad is not a Mac and it will never be a MAC period. Anyone needing a Mac is free to buy it.
There are a few future scenarios though (1) Apple decides to merge Mac and iPad OS. In this case it is Mac which will be redesigned with a touch interface in mind and put in iPad (2) Apple keeps both OS separate and bring all the pro apps like XCode, final cut pro, logic pro etc to iPad and iPad OS is modified to add a lot of functionalities to be almost like a complete computer. Still it will remain a touch oriented somewhat computer and not like Mac or windows.
Most of the use case mentioned in the thread can be done on cheapest iPad too, still imo this is an overkill product for 99% of users.
Going by that logic, cheapest pc can also do a lot of tasks so why buy a powerful machine? Well cheapest iPad cannot have a lot of layers in procreate, affinity photo and photoshop because of less RAM neither it can run complex brushes and effects on a large canvas or images. It does not have a 12.9 inch display so the video/image editing and drawing experience will not be optimal. A lot of people with basic computing needs can also utilize the large screen for productivity which cheapest iPad cannot offer. Cheapest iPad does not have thunderbolt so multiple devices at the same time are not possible and cheapest iPad cannot edit videos from an external drive. Cheapest iPad won't be able to run Logic pro, XCode and Final cut pro which are coming to iPad pro soon. The list goes on.

1% who are expecting that iPad can replace an actual Computer, I really like their optimism and even wish that could happen someday.
Dude, It is you who is expecting it to be a complete computer. Others are happy buying it as a computing powerhouse for 90% of the tasks and perform rest of the tasks on their other machine.
Can't agree more, people who generally buy such expensive add ons already have basic stuff like real computer with them.
It is not just an expensive add on. It is a powerful computing device. Just because you don't edit videos, images and draw that doesn't mean others don't. iPad pro can outmatch a lot of RTX equipped windows machine or even Mac in drawing experience while costing less. This year Apple is expecting to sell 5 million units of iPad pro 12.9 in 2021. All these people cannot be rich kids wasting money.
Still I think there are very few cases not more than 1% perhaps that may warrant a Pro over cheaper models. Personally I think this will be a brilliant Netflix machine for those who want to enjoy movies on the go and that's where the use case ends at least in my scenario.
More like 80%. Bigger screen with better display is a big enough reason for pros to switch. Well Galaxy tab s7+ with its AMOLED display and 16:9 aspect ratio is the Netflix machine for you. Leave the iPad pro for pros unless you want big black bars. :p

Okay if you are a real pro then why are you using iPad for editing videos or photos? If for Pencil, I can understand but not otherwise. 12.9 inch is not super portable either and combined with Magic Keyboard it is very close to Air territory. Do you like Touch Screen devices only or not happy that Mac don't support it? Why buy something that can do only 90% tasks, as a drawing device I can understand and hence said that 1% users (counting only Pros) may really need that extra power but why buy a crippled device to do Pro tasks. You do photo/video editing only maybe that's why? Anyways if more people pros are finding these devices useful, well good for them.

I can tell you I use mine (ipp A12x) like a real PC all the time for emails and word docs..
In fact that’s what I am using right now...

It’s a lot lighter than the MBA , pretty much as fast but has the weight/display equation very much in its favor.
It still manages a narrow lead on battery life - although the gap is much smaller now
Also, its a far superior device on the go because of the inbuilt data connection

With the old Intel MBP, i’d say my usage was 80:20 in the favor of iPP - with the MBP used only for something very trackpad intensive
That has reduced to say 50: 50 now after the ARM macbook but the usage still remains high

i cannot for the love of god even imagine using an iPad for even proper web browsing, let alone doing any type of work. i had to use an iPad Pro 11 for a week when I didn't have my laptop and god it sucked. the in hand feel, speakers and youtube browsing were awesome, but that's about it. it's just a glorified iPhone for me.
that said, there maybe people who find iOS and touch screen more user friendly and people who can work only on an iPad (for eg artists and students).

although i'm happy there exists really good options for everyone now, one can choose specifically according to his/her needs. personally, macbook >>> iPad.

I need that mini-led on mb air :(

Were you using it with the kb folio or with the on screen keyboard?

If you want to use the iPad as a creators' tool , the pencil is a must have - (I have one but very rarely use it)
If you want to use it as a super portable laptop , the KB folio is a must have ( I use it almost all the time)

I think I would have echoed your thoughts if not for the folio

i used it without keyboard. had the pencil though.

today i tried my friend's 12.9 with magic keyboard and it felt a lot better. but the keyboard and trackpad itself feels too little for my taste. also the files app definitely requires a proper mature update for iPad imo. and bring floating windows maybe? until then it cannot be called a laptop replacement.

It surely isn’t a laptop replacement at all - dont think it is meant to be or should be...
i dont like the pencil either.. I use it maybe like once in 2 months ..

when i got the A12x iPP, i wanted to upgrade from 9.7 to the 12.9
But thankfully i tried both in a store and found the 11 with to be a much better fit for me ergonomically speaking...esp once the KB folio is attached

I do not use the trackpad - i have the vanilla old kb folio .. I thought of getting the trackpad folio (magic kb?) when it came out but did not see much value of the trackpad on the OS

The files app could surely be better
I don’t mind the lack of windowed mode as it would add an extra complication of resizing etc and would kill the simplicity/ focus that comes from a single window on a small screen.
In fact i don’t like side by side windows on laptop screens either and prefer using a multi monitor setup when thats needed.
The single floating mode window (on the right or left) does the job (somewhat unergonomically) in a pinch when needed.. (e.g. let a call window or notes app stay afloat while working on i dunno, say outlook)

End of the day, It’s a brilliant (but secondary) productivity tool though for those whose work revolves around computers...
It would make very little sense for a student (or anyone who wants to keep a single computing device) to buy it over a PC/ Mac
Or for that matter, to buy it over the vanilla ipad if its only for netflix etc

With the M1 in iPad, my thoughts are that Apple is planning a major update to iPadOS. It also streamlines their chip line - just the M1s needed everywhere except iPhone/Air/Mini.
Also, on the question of versatility of iPad, it's a joy to use with the Pencil. I use it for Notes, Affinity, and reading. When I upgrade (mine is 2017 Pro, 512 GB; not upgrading anytime soon), undoubtedly it'll be 1 TB or more.
For users on the go all the time, 512 is not enough.

I shall explain my personal reasons once I get my 12.9 2021 version. But I think you are under the impression that image/video editing, art is just a side task and real work involves keyboard. This is where you are mistaken. Ipad pro is primarily a touch oriented content creation device and keyboard is just an extra add on to it. Just because Apple calls it a computer that doesn't mean it really is a computer like a Mac. I have already explained the benefits of a pro model over cheapest iPad.
Go to Apple website and see what apps Apple promotes for iPad Pro. You will find Procreate, Luma Fusion, Adobe fresco, Good note etc. Now think what these apps do and can you do it on a Mac without spending more money while NOT having a crippled experience? You will have your answer.

That's a pretty misleading statement.

In Q4 of 2020 alone, the tablet market increased by 28 per cent on YoY basis. Since this 'new normal' or the pandemic will stay for a while, tablets will be sold a lot.

And that's why Apple is pushing so much technology into the iPad. If the tablet market was indeed dying, Apple wouldn't have made such drastic improvements to the Pro monikers.

The main issue is that the iPads are being bought for consumption and studies. Doing any sort of actual serious work on it is practically a non starter.

The pandemic will continue, but how many people will buy tablets? Some of my work colleagues got iPads for their kids, because they thought it would be better for studies, and they could reuse for themselves later, but in the end nearly 30-40 percent of the study stuff is being done on a computer.
It depends
I have the A12X iPad Pro LTE with a KB folio
If I exclude office work, it is my most heavily used computing device by a wide margin.

While I have had several iPads from gen 1 onwards in the past, to your point, they remained very lightly used - media consumption sort of devices.
Its hard to say whether it's the desktop like power on the a12x or the keyboard that made the difference - but its been a total paisa vasool buy.
Of course it is no desktop - and it be stupid to assume that it will be anywhere close to a desktop - but for many use cases (browsing/ email/ photo editing etc) , it works brilliantly well - better than any desktop/laptop if I may say so

The M1 Pro at the same price point would have been a no-questions-asked buy for me if not for the fact that the a12x serves the needs as is - or if I can find a proactively ready buyer for the current one ;)

Exactly. You would be using the device mainly for consumption, and for work, if the workflow is that way.

I think its more to do with the better hardware and software. Using an older iPad with a janky keyboard was a PITA. Now, with Apple embracing this and getting better hardware its improved by light years. Then the software has finally caught up. You don't want one screen only - you might want a bit of multi tasking.
IMO, Apple will not bring macOS to the iPad Pro because it doesn't make business sense for them to cannibalize their own product.
An iPad Pro + keyboard cover is not too far away from an M1 Mac Air in logistical convenience, but the iPad is a severely gimped device, by design.

The last thing the iPad Pro needed was more power, it needs better software, take a look at the HN launch thread - for most it was a media consumption device or a family toy.

Aha, but you see, it will not cannibalize their product at all. In fact I would say that it will bring more into the Apple fold from the windoze team. The MBAs and the MBPs will be able to work for far more sustained times, plus will have that extra RAM and storage!

Exactly.

But for most use cases where all you need to do is reply on mails, it works well. Plus you have the price factor AND pro tag ;)

Technically, I think they would keep only 2 hardware lines, and reuse the older chips for things like the apple tv or homepod or etc like they are doing. Maybe in a couple of years, the M1 would come to the iPad
