Is India a big market a big lie?

It's unfortunate but it does not change the point. It will take time.
This is called shifting responsibility on "fate".

At what point according to you then do we become a mature democracy?

It's obvious where this line of reasoning leads. Nowhere. We are 75 years old, and we've had thirteen peaceful transitions of power. That is damn good if you ask me considering nobody gave us a chance to even survive as a country after independence. Don't know how we pulled it off but I'm not complaining.
When majority of population vote on matters of real importance & not caste, region & religion then it is known as a mature democracy. India is a democracy but not mature democracy, pakistan is a failed democracy where even peaceful transitions of power did not happen.

You are not aware of his achievements then and in the foreign policy space which I look at are considerable.. Everything you said comes from the opposition. If the guy was that bad he'd not have got the votes he did. Biden's win was marginal over him instead of being a landslide.
You call meeting an unhinged dictator like Kim Jong Un or pulling out from Iran nuclear deal without international consensus or policy reversal in Afghanistan "achievements? Just because he was anti-China does not make him a good leader, even a broken clock tells time correctly 2 times in a day. In US, prez is not elected via popular votes like in India but via indirect votes so if a state votes in favour of a candidate by even 100 extra votes then all the representative votes of that state goes to the winning candidate. Trump never won a majority in "popular votes" but that is also not required to win prez election in US.

The change is necessary because the media space has changed. The internet took away their revenues and that affected the way they cover the news. It's also got a lot more crowded. These days alt media does the deep dives we used to get in magazines or special interest programs. They don't have the budget for that anymore or very few do.
Internet nowadays is nothing but an echo chamber where anybody can find support for anything if look far enough incl Flat Earth theory. Simplest explanation is often the right one, to put anything in print version of a newspaper make that newspaper liable to court cases in case of any inaccuracy but that is not the case for online resources. That is why, only read important news in print versions of national newspapers.

Any party.
Clearly not any party.

Karnataka chose congress coalition in last state election too, right, remember? Why was BJP ruling the state? How long do you think current congress govt will be allowed to continue?

Goa chose congress coalition in last to last state election too, right? Why was BJP ruling there despite losing?

Madhya Pradesh chose congress with, right? why is BJP there?

Same story in Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur. Everywhere BJP came to power by undemocratically stealing MPs. It's called operation lotus. It failed in Bihar. Right now we can see it in operation in Rajasthan.

So yeah, a political party can come to power despite losing. Vote don't seem to matter. Many wouldn't call it democracy.

@guest_999

More govt harassment

Indian politics and its attitude toward free speech is depressing. We are abysmal from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Just in the past few hours, I have heard 3 separate news segments where individuals are arrested for different reasons:
1. BJP’s state secretary SG Suryah is arrested over a tweet on an allegedly false remark.
2. An FIR has been registered against a Gadag-based paan shop owner for sharing an alleged derogatory Facebook post against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, criticising the Karnataka government’s free bus scheme for women.
3. The Maharashtra Police is on the lookout for a man who allegedly shared a post on social media comparing CM Shinde with a character from the film 'Adipurush'.
No matter what the political outfit, the attitude towards free speech in India remains the same.

The software was updated long ago, it seems not to have rolled out yet

Decide whether you want to be a slave or stand on your feet
Clearly not any party.

It's full-term since they have a majority, Best of luck poaching from that kind of majority :)

This used to be worse in the past, there was that saying from decades ago 'aya Ram gaya Ram'

Didn't they pass some law a while back to curb these abuses for exactly the reason you said, not a democracy? Maybe it was a bill

The public fix to this where possible is to award a thumping majority to the party they want.
This is called shifting responsibility on "fate".
Either remain a slave or stand up. Or spread awareness, someone will if you won't

This will take a larger middle class than is the case today. It will happen

Meeting Kim cut China out of the deal which they were trying to fix in their interest. didn't get that subtle point did you?

Iran was about recognising that they have proxies in four countries and would become an even bigger threat. There is a clear partisan divide on this one.

Afghanistan was about giving up on a lost cause. The time to go back was after Operation Neptune Spear. But it took three presidents to finally pull out. And see the result, the Paks are now embroiled on their western border.

Being anti-China was reversing a half-century policy where US finally understood colluding with the enemy was a bad idea. Note that Biden has not reversed anything to date on this.

You've left out some others. Abraham accords. Where one president was responsible for Israel being recognised by more Gulf countries than the last six administrations put together going back to Carter.

He put the democrat thing called Project Ukraine on hold. There never would have been the present conflict if he got a second term. Because he kept blocking these warmongering attempts they slapped him with the Mueller investigation. Trying to prevent a war with Russia gets you investigated for colluding with Russia. Go figure.

They accused him of being a warmonger which was the exact opposite. The only place he'd send US troops is HOME. The man was the most benevolent president the Americans had in a long time. But oh no the liberal media would never let you realise that. The media bias and its extent were completely exposed during his term. What does it say when Russian media is more sympathetic to his policy than his own? The funny thing is we're seeing some shades of this from the Paks on Modi's policy these days.

We have the same first-past-the-post system in India too. In the '99 election, Congress won the popular vote by over 20 million more yet Vajpayee became the PM.

Well, you need to exercise care and be selective. There are more specialised options available that you could not dream of having even five years back. They discuss anything the mainstream puts up. But understanding that can take more effort. It is easier to figure out what is happening abroad then it was twenty years ago. It is possible for some foreigner to have a better idea of what is going on in your city than you.

When truth offends you, fire the messenger.

In an unprecedented move, the Union government has suspended the director of the International Institute for Population Sciences, K.S. James, citing an irregularity in recruitment, sources have told The Wire.

The International Institute for Population Sciences or IIPS prepares the National Family Health Surveys and does other such important exercises on the behalf of the Indian government. The IIPS comes under the Union health ministry.

The Wire reached out to the ministry but has not received a response yet. The story will be updated as and when the ministry responds.

However, an IIPS source at the department of public health and mortality studies has confirmed to The Wire that a suspension letter has been issued and that further details would come on Monday.

Sources told The Wire that James had been asked by the government to resign earlier as the government was not happy with certain data sets that came up in the surveys conducted by the IIPS.

WTF is this:

You dont like the data sets so you fire the guy who collects data. Beyond hilarious ! :banghead:
And this is not first time. I recall there was similar event back in 2019 related with statistics or audit data (link). There was another instance where they change the way to calculate falling GDP to look better.

Can't look bad if there's no data to show. This is the reason they're stopping collecting statistics for various things. They just want a bunch of yes men in office.

India is not a democracy it's a mobocracy(mobocracy is defined as a way of the masses to overwhelm/disregard the law of the land) at best. Most people are corrupt to the core and expect no corruption from politicians and bureaucrats. Previously this behaviour of population was termed as a side effect of being poor, same cannot be said today in 2023.

Why is everyone surprised? I think people did not get the memo. All heads of Universities heads must be RSS members without an exception.

Is International institute of population science a university? Yes, it's a deemed university.

Is Mr. K.S. James an RSS member? No

All university heads replaced in last few years are RSS members with no exception.

Do let me know if there are any replacements who aren't RSS members.

India is a republic whose laws have to conform to a constitution. Otherwise, you get mob rule which only democracy is

suspension is not a punishment but resorted to in specific circumstances to pave way for free and fair investigation.

Word used here is suspended.

Anonymous sources and unspecified data sets??? This is classic propaganda, not journalism.

Why would anyone take this seriously?

What are these matters of real importance and who decides what is important to someone?

Could you give examples of a few mature democracies that vote on these matters of real importance?

As I grow older, I see more and more signs that law and order and justice and procedure and the proper way things should be done is mostly nonexistent.

Generations before us might have been idealists to instill those values but very few of the people who are left with us believe and act that way.

Not just here, but most other countries have the same problem. Current leaders aren't as moral or ethical as their predecessors.

Which is why I mostly stay out of political discussions — I just accept it as an inherent flaw of humanity.

-I agree to your views .But of late i feel we as people have failed the democracy in general. We enjoy the fruits of democracy but we don't contribute to it.
-Idealistic or Good or so called Brightest of minds not taking active part in democracy is a huge concern for India or for that matter any country.

-People who have idealistic views or lets say same set of views should actively run for the seat in election .Represent their views or at least during their canvasing phase present those to the people and if the idea is relevant for the good of the people. People will/should demand from the government.

-In short if good people don't run for election the bad guys are just waiting .When they win they sit on top of the good guy and they good guy say that our democracy is not in good hands.

Classic case of Mahabharata.

-Bhism, Kripacharya ,Dron ,Karn and the whole lot were silent against Duryodhans deeds and again sided him during Mahabharat was Bad choice on their part and they suffered.

-Implementation of Karn`s demand of equality .Right to learning /profession irrespective of your caste of creed was acknowledged even after he represented Kauravas.

Following lines or learnings from Gita will always be irreplaceable.

-Change is constant .So embrace the change.

-God always gives you choices .The choices we take decide our destinies.

-Respect the women.

Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times.
The only place other than movies where the good guys always win is in our history books. Our society runs on illusions.

As institutions mature the process becomes automatic. Institutions that can operate on their own without having to depend on personalities at the top to make them work.

Take the Election Commission India. Just works isn't it? Nobody questions the results or not seriously.

Sometimes a reboot is required like with this population sciences director which none of the sources I follow has mentioned anything yet.

What is not reported is all this mundane stuff and only controversial or can be twisted to sound like it makes the news. Watch out for opposition sources which are always rabble-rousing and nine out of ten things they talk about can be safely ignored.

People are ignorant of the process and don't want to know.

Just fix my problem and how much do I pay to get to the front of the line they want to know? Then complain oh we are so corrupt.
