I am still finding out a reason to understand where he went wrong and why this thread is full of rattling !
Also, whether you are paid by employer or by clients directly, you need to "work for yourself" !
Murthy doesn't give a f about his employees, his company is full of overworked and underpaid employees. Does that answer your question?

Also, putting in 10-14 hours job doesn't mean 'working for yourself'.

So exploitation is justified now because nation wants to grow. You can expolit people in white coller jobs beause they are not working for themselves and it’s their own fault. They should be expolited by their employers.

Instead of just mentioning 70 hours per week, if Mr.Murthy had given the proper breakdown people wouldn't have any issues with his noble intentions:

40 hours per week : Industry equivalent pay + Benefits
41 hrs - 50 hrs per week : 2 times the pay + benefits + 24/7 premium membership to mental health specialists.
51 hrs to 70 hrs per week: 3 times the pay + benefits + 24/7 premium membership to mental health specialists + 24/7 suicide helpline premium membership+ Suicide Deterrent installed across all campuses.

somebody please ask those Employees who are fired from job due to slow down or recession if he/she would like to work for 12 hrs. or not ?
You do realize its a double edged sword?
When employees were job hopping like mercenaries in the crazy attrition days , most firms that were hiring knew it was wrong in principle yet hired these folks at disproportionate compensation levels..
Were such mercenary mindset employees wrong - Yes.

Also a large proportion of people currently out of a job are from the same pool.

Similarly when an employer underpays folks and expects them to slog disproportionate hours, it’s also equally wrong.
And when the job market opens up again (given its cyclical nature), its these dissatisfied employees who will jump ship first.

A lack of equilibrium is never good for anyone in the long run in a free economy. Be it consumer markets or the job market

Look, if I owned and ran a business, and all the profits were mine to keep, I would slog 70 hours too, to build it up and get more money.
From that POV, NRN statement makes sense but that is it.

But as an employee, I get paid for my time, and india isn't really good about OT. We are exploited enough anyway.

Recently so many heart attacks are happening, we dont get physical activity because we slog at work and then dont get time.
In any case we should have better work life balance, and re-approach what "work" even is.

Life is so unpredictable, I would rather work 4 days and spend time with family and loved ones than slog for a billion dollar company making mindless profits by layoffs and unethical practices like keeping wages low.

Also, work done should not be measured in number of hours of work, that is IT coolie mindset of NRN which shows.

My limited reading of what is said that if we need to excel, we need to put more productive hours to work.
Sorry, if I taken this as his logic, did he said something else ?

Yeah, he said a slightly different thing. Not if we need to excel, but "for the country" we should work 70 hours.

Of course, country means Infosys, and Infosys means his own shareholding.

70+ hours per week but overtime is not counted right after work hours end. How many companies have a rule that they start counting OT 2/3 hours after the normal working hours end?
If companies want to nickle and dime their workers, workers will do the same and try to get fewer working hours. Doesn't matter if the CEO works 100 hours a week. His compensation for those 100 hours is disproportionately higher than if one of the low level staff worked for 100 hours a week. This guy probably makes +1L an hour. Daily wage workers and other profession workers like carpenters, plumbers etc work for 10-12 hrs a day and get like 1000-2000 rupees in cities. It's even lower in villages and tier 2/3 cities. I don't see them buying 1Cr houses or Mercedes/BMW cars anytime. And these people have been working like that for decades. Even farmers work the whole day and end up penniless.

Another one

'No big achievement can come with work-life balance': CRED's Kunal Shah flags risk of Western concepts for India

Kunal Shah's remarks are somewhat similar to what Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy said a few days ago when he asked youngsters to work harder if they wanted to see India compete with China and become number one or two in terms of GDP.

Whenever someone uses Kunal Shah as an example I'm like guy does not even have a wikipedia page, atleast the MD and CEO of the organisation where i work have their own wikipedia pages. I have seen these people working more than me at double my age but said guys don't stroke their ego by making public statements and whatnot.

The only thing that Indians did after Independence was contribute in Janganana i.e. population census and everyone is paying for it today.
Too much population has lead to an attitude of "I can and will do it cheaper than him" which has lead to the mentality of getting cheap labor and while it's not wrong as everyone has different circumstances but this has lead to the attitude of "Work 70-80-90 hours a week" so CEO's think if you won't do it cheaper someone else will.
In the hindsight only if they had worked for 70 hours a week:tearsofjoy:

No political party wants to address this situation, as there are multiple factors at play.

And as SRK once said "Be Rich first and then a philosopher" and he qualifies the Rich part so......
But these statements only make it worse for other employees as other Employers get encouraged to exploit.
