Need help in deciding an air conditioner - 1 ton vs 1.5 ton

Are you checking on Amazon or any local stores?
For now, Amazon, will inquire with local stores soon. Would probably buy in Holi sale or if I get a really good offer, now. Hoping to get 3-4k in CC offers

I too was interested in Daikin and was my 1st pref bcz my neighbors suggested (they were not happy with their 2020 LG 3 star AC), but hearing that they have only 3rd party service providers and some redditors complained Daikin had terrible service in their neighborhoods (some areas in Hyd), I couldn't go with Daikin.
I saw a Reddit post about some Daikin service personnel sexual harassing the customer. Daikin support was quick to fire the personnel. Service providers have become a hit-and-miss now, I have seen post about LG having bad service.

I don't think there would be any Holi sale. But do check. When summer starts, they will hike the prices usually or keep no offers with popular cc.

Ya, I have read that too. It was terrible man. Not sure if he was arrested and jailed for such actions.
That was a guy working for a third party service provider. So obviously not afraid of company taking any actions. If it was a company owned or managed employee, it would have been different.
Not just that, but too many "gas leak" issues or scams with AC services.
Even AO Smith has 3rd party tie ups for service and I finally understood why it's bad.
That's why buying products have become too confusing now.

I had a bad experience with Daikin inverter AC at my parents' house. The installation itself was erratic, with appointments rescheduled 3 times before the service technician came 5 days later. Even then, installation was a shoddy job, and within a few months, the cooling capacity had dropped tremendously. Customer service calls were useless. Four times, their service technician visited our place, and ended up just cleaning the filters and making some changes to the settings using the remote. We ended up calling a local known technician within one year of purchasing the AC, who diagnosed that the gas level was too low for a new machine. After his visit, the AC started working fine.
If you are buying a Daikin, or any other brand for that matter, enquire your neighbours about the service quality in your area before making a decision.

Did you report/give feedback about this to Daikin? What was their response?

if budget is not an issue, look into Mitsubishi ACs since we are talking about brands here, and as for tonnage, I would just spring for 1.5ton for peace of mind

For a top-floor room OR west-facing walls that get a lot of direct sunlight, a 1.5-ton AC would work best. Considering budget and service availability in your area, my preference would be: Mitsubishi >> Panasonic > LG

So u r suggesting 1.5 ton becz he has 100sq ft room?

It's not just about the 100 sqft size. There are two reasons:
First, it's on the top floor, so the roof can get extremely hot. Second, he might move out of the rented house in a year. With a 1.5 convertible you don't have to regret later.

If it is Top floor or walls facing direct sunlight then going with 1.5 ton split ac would be best. Taking into account OPs budget & service availability in the area, Hitachi >>Daikin >> LG >> Voltas must be the preference. Normally LG & Voltas has good experienced service engineers.
My father bought four Voltas 1.5 ton 5 star rating Split ACs in 2012 but changed gas in 2019 only and still going strong. While my aunt bought two LG 1.5 ton 5 star rating Split ACs in 2019 are still working without any problems but changed gas in 2023. Both times experienced engineers came from LG & Voltas.

When we were in Hyderabad my wife used to call Urban Clap for servicing our Vestar 1.5 ton 3 star AC but urban clap guys who come own shops locally and are illiterate though they complete the job it does not look professional at all. So dont ever call Urban Clap for servicing ACs.

Here are some 1.5 ton models of split ACs from both LG & Voltas:

LG calls its Split ACs Convertibles while Voltas calls its Split ACs Inverters. I think both names are just a gimmick.
Buying offline from Bajaj or Croma or Reliance means we have pay for Installation separately while buying from Amazon or Flipkart means Installation charges are included.

In the same case if his room size is 150sq ft, would he have to choose 2 ton?

Re: star ratings, do note that you should look at the detailed datasheet and not rely on the rating itself. Some manufacturers use a lower cooling capacity in that calculation to arrive at a higher star rating.

No, a 1.5-ton AC is enough for a 150 sqft room. I didn't mean to imply a direct correlation. There are many factors to consider beyond just the size of the room. Most brands offer online calculators to help with specific situations.

In a typical scenario without direct sunlight, a 1-ton AC will work for a 100 sqft room. However, OP's case (hot city, top floor, possible shift to a larger room from rented premise), a larger tonnage will be best choice.

Even Amazon charges for installation (like, they notify you that it needs to be paid offline to service personnel). There is a reason installation is not free, The service personnel don't leave unless provided some cash, this way at least you can say no to a tip or a 'fat' tip. I am not going to pick Voltas, my dad had a bad experience(in HYD) with the installation, luckily the next service was free because of the comprehensive warranty.
@ToroVolante Do let us know what you buy at the end and how's the installation experience.

Absolutely.

Go with a 1.5 ton because most manufacturers after covid are short changing because if you do look at the specs more carefully you will see it might only be 1.3 or 1.4 ton but marketed as 1.5 ton.

do the following calculation when buying. you will find the cooling capacity mentioned in the bee star label sticker.
12000 BTU = 1 TON
Cooling capacity*3.412 = BTU of ac
BTU of ac/12000 = actual tonnage
