Part I

Zen almost sold for 1.5L

Part II

New Car:

Budget: 6L Max.

Current Contenders:

Diesel:

Hyundai i20 1.4 Era CRDI BS-IV

Fiat Grande Punto 1.3 Emotion

Volkswagen Polo 1.2L Comfortline (D)

Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire LDi BS-IV

Comparison

Specification wise i20 is the most powerful, BUT m not so convinced with the Exterior Looks.

Exterior wise Polo seems the most Beautiful and Durable in terms of Build Quality to me, BUT it doesn't offer Many Features in the Price Segment for diesel. (no Turbo, no ABS, Interior sucks).

Puntu offer me a balance of both. Exterior is Great, wish it was as awesome as Polo though. Powerful 1.3 Midjet engine with Turbo, ABS and better interiors.

Swift Desire is the only one which i have actually ridden out of these, Satisfied with its Power Throughoutput, Interior is fine but the look sucks donkey b*ll imo. This i my last option.

(Above thing were specific to the models i mentioned and not the whole lot)

In Diesel Category, My priority:

Fiat Grande Punto 1.3 Emotion

Volkswagen Polo 1.2L Comfortline (D)

Hyundai i20 1.4 Era CRDI BS-IV

Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire LDi BS-IV

Petrol:

Volkswagen Polo 1.2L Highline (P)

Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 Emotion

In case of petrol i would most prolly go for Polo.

But mostly getting Diesel.

Kindly suggest which one and why.

Also, would like to get user info about After sales Service and Parts costs of both Fiat and Volkswagen.

Will post this at TBHP Later.

Try mahindra first choice to get a quote for your car. After that up it by 10-20k and put it up on every online car site

As for which car to buy, Guess that depends on the quote you get and you budget

Are u sure u want to opt for a diesel??

I sumhow hate any & every diesel car that there is in the world!!! Overstatement!!! Lolzzz :P

Well actually, I have always preferred the petrols for & no matter how advanced a diesel I try, I find it sluggish than its petrol counterpart!!! I only prefer diesels in SUVs.....

I would suggest u use sumones diesel for a few days before u take the plunge......

And form ur list, I would suggest the Swift Dzire & the Fiat G Punto in that order..... Petrol or Diesel.....

Swift would give great service & resale value assurance. Fiat had a poor service record but now that Tata is handling it.... One can expect things to be better..... But resale value is not gonna work up.... i guess..... :(

your choices seems fine but what is your monthly running?

if you love the fun of turbo from a diesel go for it or its really not worth the extra bucks paid if your running is low.

there is the polo 1.6 petrol or the i20 CRDi !!

both revolve around the same price range..

i have been considering Polo 1.6L Highline Lately, the extra 40k is not at all an issue.

im just going through TBHP for user reviews and mileage..

the mileage is the main issue.

i will check how much it would be driven in next 5years and and calculate expenditure with inflated fuel prices.

most probably i will have to back down and settle for something cheaper due to On road price being 75k-1L more which would put me to 7L budget..

Swift Desire is my last resort. i20 looks ugly and so does the Swift desire.. but if at all im compromising on looks then i would do that all the way to Swift Desire for piece of mind maruti service.

so far im hearing good things about polo but the 1.2L is not that great with 3 cylinder engine. I hear it has higher engine noise and not so 'to die for' performance.

lastly, i do wanna get Punto 1.3L Midjet but hearing bad interior material quality and not so reputed fiat service is making me worry.

^ 2010 punto models are of better quality, fit and finish but say not on par with polo, i20. Service wise Fiat-TATA cars are no good but not that bad also. Fiat Punto scores on handling and ride and highway comfort. If you plan to do highway trips more often choose Punto just because of its highway abilities but for a city car choose one b/w Swift, Polo, Figo or Micra. (I would suggest you to get Jack of all trades, Figo ;) )

As you are aware all engines are upgraded to BS 4 standards. (Was the reason for the i20 diesel to get a sixth gear)
From what i know the fiat punto diesel will work good overall if you leave resale value.
If you want better resale value look for MS then hyundai.

I would say go for Punto MJD Emotion. It's a great engine, the dynamics are best in class, ride is exceptional, looks are stunning. Interior quality is below par to premium hatch standards, but nothing as bad as it is made out to be. It comes loaded with many features too and if you love driving, you will enjoy the car. If possible, increase the budget a little and go for Emotion pack, lots of features including Blue & Me, Airbags.

Regarding Fiat parts, for Punto they are localized and competitively priced similar to Maruti. Tata Fiat service is something you will have to compromise on, also the resale value. Also the service varies from dealer to dealer. I believe you will be looking to buy from Fortune cars, Nerul since you are in NM. I bought Punto Emotion petrol from there as well, and my car is going for first service this Monday. Hope they do a good job.

Other than that, if you love features, i20 is loaded to the brim with amazing features. But you are looking for Era which is base model, so you will miss out on many features that Punto offers. Personally, I feel it looks good too. Only thing, it doesn't give that driving pleasure that Punto gives, but this is not a priority for many. You get good resale and service with it as well. Reported poor AC performance by many. Try to get a Magna if possible.

Regarding Polo 1.2, 3 pot engine and lack of features make it less exciting. VW parts could be the most expensive of the lot, I'm not sure though. Swift Dzire I'll give it a miss if I were you.

see i have ridden swift desire VDi and it now costs 6L something.

i will be taking test drives today for Polo 1.2L Petrol Highline, 1.2L D Trendline and 1.6L Highline.

as well Punto 1.3L MJD Emotion.

Hope those are available to TD :P

Punto seems Balanced for features and performance from what i see, only if dad is ok with 7L budget for 1.6L Polo Highline with low mileage then he would probably buy that.

update by the late evening.

could not TD anything other than Polo 1.2L Petrol Highline due to crappy weather and other stuff.

experience was some what satisfactory as i could not drive for longer than 1km.

gear shifting was a pleasure.

did some calculations including running cost and have managed to convince dad for Polo 1.6L Highline Petrol :P

Member over TBHP claimed 13-14kmpl economy for Polo 1.6L over highways so i assumed 10kmpl for city conditions.

its coming out to be ~6.8L on road as per their printed price on quotation.. i suppose pricing shall come down 20k with some bargain.

moreover the wait period is 4months for 1.2L models and 2months for 1.6L

will try out punto and i20 tomorrow if weather doesnt screw up.

really wanna try out punto but everybody that i spoke about punto is scaring me away with pathetic service from Fiat/TATA :(

I sent my linea for second free service yesterday. They asked for 4 days. Idiots.

Brought it down to 3. But still :(

Punto will be the same

alright, lets have some perspective here.
considering actual economy values(as per user reports) rather than what company claims
Lets consider using the worst economy values..that is for city only.

| Polo 1.2P Highline | Polo 1.2D Highline | Polo 1.6 Highline | Swift Desire 1.6 VDi Price |6.4L|7.5L|6.8L|~6L
Economy kmpl|13-15|18-22|10-13|16-20
50000km |2.3L|1.25L|3L|1.4L
100000km |4.6L|2.5L|6L|2.8L
50k Ownership |8.7L|8.75L|9.8L|7.4L
100k Ownership |11L|10L|12.8L|8.4L
All Assuming Petrol = Rs.60/- per L, Diesel = Rs.45/- per L (In future)

Observations:-

1. Swift Desire VDi is ultimate VFM.

2. Initial cost difference between Polo 1.2 P and 1.6 P comes to 36k to be precise..
If I subtract the amount from Ownership cost, it comes to be Rs70000 extra per 50000km. Which is Rs1.4/- extra per km which i would be paying for much better performance and a little silent engine.

Im planning 50000km in next 5yrs..
Owning cost per km for 50000km for Polo 1.2 P = 8.7L/50k = 17.4/km
For 1.6 P with effective 9.4L Ownership cost it becomes 18.8/km

which doesnt seem alot above what i would be already paying with 1.2L P

Conclusion:-
Either book Polo 1.6 Highline Petrol ASAP
OR
Wait for Volkswagen Golf to be launched :P

Alright

I Test Drove Polo 1.2 Petrol again.

The performance is good enough for a city car or even the occasional cruising kinds...an the card was loading with 4people including me.

At the 1st TD i felt little less performance due to superb noise isolation and this time i actually tried concentrating over the speed and response. I liked it.

The main reason finally comes down to user reviews..

I need more response from owners regarding actual mileage in city and highway for both 1.2L and 1.6L Polo.

Turned out that a friend of dad's Punto 1.3L MJD which i will be trying this week.

Uncles friend recently bought i20 which i would be trying so i would be having a more than TD experience now for Punto, i20 and swift Desire.

so mainly boils down to how bright the Polo owners feel about the mileage thing on Petrol models.

lastly, i tried registering over TBHP last week.

The asked for their policy thingie.. i read all and i was fine with all.. so Input 'Im fine with your policies and nothing contructuiive that i can think of rightnow.. Although i will feel free to point out in anything useful can be suggested'

My registration was canceled.

I dont know what sort of response do they expect from someone no to hardcore on the BHP yet. Did not bother registering again. But any help from TBHP members from TE will be very much of help.

^^
I understand what you mean. I tried registering first time and mine was rejected as well. Turns out, there are people trying to register and got rejected for more than 10 times even.

On 2nd time, I tried to be as elaborate as I possibly can with the answers to their questions and I was accepted.

The reg process is very strict and based on those answers they make sure that you follow basic forum etiquettes and are serious about their terms and conditions. Mention that you are a senior TE member and that will very much help.
