So the reboot fever is on my pc......

it can happen anytime.......

-if im browsing.

-if im seeing a video on youtube.

-if the pc is on but is not in use.

-listening to music.

-playing nfs.

It really doesnt matter when and how...just happens....

After the reboot is done , no error , no eventlog nothing.....only at some times it says windows was shut because of some problem blah blah blah and asks me if i want to send an error report or not....

Specs:

E2160 @ Stock C1E enabled

2x 1GB Transend 800 Mhz RAM

Biostar GF7050 motherboard

Powersafe GOLD 400W

Samsung DVDRW

1x Sata HDD

1x IDE HDD

I thought it might be some internal connection problem so I went ahead and removed everything , checked for any shorts , rewired everything and alas after 2 hours what I got is a reboot....initially i thought it might be the onboard GPU heating up so I even checked the HSF for thermal glue and its fine , no problems.....CPU also aint overheating - although its running a lil hot....I did lay down a new layer of AS5 to it too.......

CoreTemp 0.99.2 shows :

Tj. Max : 85 deg C

Core 0 : 43 deg C

Core 1 : 42 deg C

System is spyware / adware / trojan / virus free ......

I ran Orthos stress on the cpu and mem sticks for abt 10 mins but still it dint reboot......are there any tests i should do ?

Here is my next to do list.....pls suggest anything better or other solutions :

1) run windows XP repair

2) run single ram sticks and alternate them

3) run another PSU

4) run single HDD and alternatly check them

i know i need to go step by step and its a long procedure.............now submitting this before the pc decides to reboot and i have to type all this again

u tried re-installing the OS?? and does it re-boots with a Blue screen?

nope , re-installation is not yet on the list....a "repair" is...
no BSOD or any error.......no popups nothing....screen goes BLANK | BLACK and its up with the POST Screens in seconds..........

^ Try booting in safe mode and see how much time it stay's up . If you press F8 at boot screen, it gives option to disable reboot on error, try that . If you have some linux live CD then try to run that for few hours. Still if it does hard reboots, try new PSU. If changing PSU won't fix then it's your mobo most probably.

The PC can stay on for hours before it would do that......and can even run into days.....2-3 days it will be fine on the 4th day it would reboot so its not that it "HAS" to happen during a given session on the comp........

Check your drivers online from http://www.driveragent.com/scan_step1.php?r=4
it may be a driver incompatibility issue

Forgot to mention earlier.....All drivers are upto date .....Chipset / Audio / Graphic / BIOS also updated to the latest.....

so the system reboots only when in windows??

did it ever reboot while loading windows? or in bios?

how frequent does it reboot?

3 options seem possible to me at the moment..

1) currupt system files

2) currupt memory locations

3) currupt data locations on hdd

run memtest86+ to ensure ur memory is fine.

use hdTune to scan bad for sectors.

if all tests passed..

keep pc on in Linux Live or bios menu n c if reboots...

if that too returns positive results then ur windows copy is screwed...if reistalling win doesnt help then probably the installation media is also screwed.

If you hard reboots and are not getting any BSOD or memory dumps created, it is most probably a hardware issue mostly with power or maybe mobo . Test RAM's with memtest as suggested. Better not waste time troubleshooting software . If your XP setup has something important .. make a small extra partition and install another copy of XP on it ( multiboot with XP FTW! ) .

dude download the Install Debugging Tools for Windows 32-bit Version win debug utility and open the memory dump file named .dmp from the windows folder and type !analyze -v in the command line of the win debugger it will tell u the problem and anothe solution is my computer-advanced tab-startup and recovery-click on properties-uncheck automatically restart check box

very informative...will do so.....

1) never rebooted when loading windows / bios
2) frequency is random , from 1 - multiple times a day to 1-multiple times a weak , can be anything....
3) will run memtest to check for memory....
4) both the hdd's are absolutely perfect , ran hdtune on both and both are all 'green'.
5) win check with ubuntu , but i dont know what do i run on ubuntu to stress the pc to do something and reboot :).....maybe i will leave it on overnight tomorrow to check...

thanks a ton with the suggestions...

gottcha , thanks for the suggestions....

Download memtest 86+, make bootable CD, (use "Burn image to disc" in NERO OR "Write image file to disc" if you use Imgbrn), boot from it. I dont kow if it works with a USB drive. I would've followed guidelines mentioned in the website.

Worth a try.
