Piracy is Inevitable?

This is like saying 'Battle of poor is called terrorism, battle of rich is called war'.

What ever is illegal will stay illegal...

But what is illegal (the reason for illegal) is changing with time.

Hi All...

Now Don't go making preposterous assumptions and conclusions before you reach the end of the article. This short article is my first one. Crticism and Suggestion welcome.

In my opinion you are a digital pirate if you.

1. Buy bootlegged copies of games/movies/music from streets
2. Download games/movies/music from Web without paying for it
3. If you use MP3's at all..
[Yeas, 99% of the MP3's that 95% of you guys have is illegal ]
4. use ebooks/Audio books that you didn't pay for.
5. HDrips/ TV shows etc All come under this list.

So Now we are clear if you are a pirate or not. Lets move forward.

Lets answer Why Piracy?

To be exact we shall discuss about Piracy in India.

I have heard pirates being called lots of choice abuse words and insults. some to the extent that they are impotent!!!...

Why does a average indian techie resort to piracy?. one word. MONEY. Lets take 2 situations

a. A unemployed kid.

Either his pops have to be earning head over heels otherwise i dont see him affording PC upgrade/ Games / Gadgets / Consoles / Console accs / Console games. some console games retail for such price that a avg indian house hold can live for a week on that. For some thats even more.:(

b. Employed Fella....

Ok..since most of us are S/w Engineers lets talk pay packs.

A normal person gets 25k~30k per month. Lets say hes staying alone. Monthly rent, food, expenses, parties & boos. and boy lets for gods sake hope that hes single. otherwise his accnt will be a joint checking account. . And lets not even consider savings, buying a house, a car or anything.

Now we have calcualted the monthly cash flow. how much one can spend on all??.. GTA4 Pc for 500 bucks was a exception, so dont start saying there are block busters cheap enuff. Dont say that if you cant afford dont buy coz DAMMN IT, I WANT TO. its human to want more. So are you saying that you are rich so that i should be drooling on what you do??. i dont think so.

BDR movies cost like 1000 bucks per movie. Comparing these to indian income its just not feasible. In US/EU countries people get paid upto 10$ for a hour. 7$ to 9$ is a more exact figure. they just work a 10 hr shift or a after a week they buy a new PS3. in india its like 25k. Buying that itself will leave most high and dry.

Yes, I can resort to seconds games. And I do. especially for PS3. Why only PS3, thats no brainer .

Arguments and Retorts.

Some common ones I already said above.

1. Support gaming in india.

Seriously i dont see the point in this.

2. Support Developers.

Please understand the cost and effort that take to develop a AAA game or a Avg Hit game. And take the sales chart. And take how much a Average indian techie have.

3. You are a loser

No Sir, you are a jack-ass for not understanding the point.
The pirates who are in case here are average indians. which are 99% of the tech forums.

And please dont even care if you are not making money for yourself. only then youll know what it feels.

I buy original when I can afford it..or IF I find it worth it.

So what about you?
Jerin

See, the issue is that your whole post assumes that it is a necessity to play video games/watch movies/listen to music and then tries to make justifications for acquiring the games. Let me be clear here, I pirate. But what we do is wrong. There is no easing our guilt of this.

^but what about those 80%(I assume) pirated windows users? :D

^ :D
It's not a necessity to have windows either. So the same holds true. There are tons of good Open Source options for an operating system.

Let me be clear, I am not 'preaching' here. I haven't payed for a windows OS ever, except for when I got free copies from Dad's office. (The office would have paid for them). Right now I am running the Windows 7 Beta and for the first time, plan to pay retail for Windows. (Though I may revert to old behaviour) :ashamed:

pirates are inevitable. If there were no pirates, global warming would spiral out of control :S

Il put u out of ur quandry. It is indeed inevitable. Hope that answers your difficult question :D

Won't repeat myself about the pros/ cons/ inevitability of piracy. Yes, I'm a pirate too but the only reason I can think of for being one is the availability of stuff I want (movies/ songs etc.). I don't have even a decent theatre here and ordering Blu rays from overseas is a pain in the a**.

Money is not a factor. Not cos I'm rich but because I live within my means and priortise my purchases. Anyways, it's not like there's a dozen good releases every month (movies, music, games or apps). If I can afford a full HD TV, I think I should be able to afford one Bluray every two months. Ditto for the best selling games.

Didn't we all go through this discussion in the past already? Anyways There is no point in trying to justifying piracy with whatever reason. Piracy is "stealing" and one simply has to accept that fact and get on with it.

If someone burgles a house, does the fact that he does not have any money make it a right thing to do?

Is the fact that a manufacturer of popular product already earns quite a lot of money from it justification enough for stealing it from a shop.

Is the fact that a particular one of a kind item that not available in the market and only present in a museum justification enough for stealing it.

For all the kinds of reasons for piracy stated by various people here, if you see that game/software in a shop, would you just try to steal it?

So there is not point in trying to justify that piracy is not stealing. Trying to justify it is just peoples way of trying to ease their own conscience about it.

As to piracy being inevitable, yes it is, you cannot stop piracy unless the law starts treating it the same way as robbery or murder and catch and punish the offenders. In a country like ours, even if the legit games start selling for 50 bucks, there would still be people who pirate and justify it with reasons like they are punishing the game developers for working so hard on the game and not giving it away for free or what ever other reason comes to their mind. In fact If people think that they can get way with murder without getting caught, they wouldn't think twice about doing it and later justify the act to their own conscience with odd reasons in the same manner.

gah. in a lot of cases, piracy is a victimless crime.

if i take a photocopy of the mona lisa and hang it in my room, did i steal anything from da vinci?

if i sit in a flat which overlooks a stadium where an IPL game is going on, and watch it , did I just steal any money from sachin or any of those cricketers?

If i look at the blueprints of the eiffel tower, and make one in my back yard, did i steal it from france?

If I'm listening to my roommate play mozart on the radio, am I depriving mozart or the orchestra/conductor of his fees for a public performance?

If you make a living selling rights to the above or similar , and feel that your livelihood has been deprived because of piracy, you didn't deserve to in the first place. These are rights which each and individual enjoys and deserves. Just because a bunch of industrialists cartelized and decided to legislate it away from us , and then sell it back to us does not make it right

@greenhorn, lol, all the examples you've cited have nothing to do with piracy. What has to do with piracy is not buying and stealing a thing which is for sale. You obviously are not a musician, actor or a software writer. How are they supposed to live if we all don't pay them for their efforts?

Abusing cartels are a different matter altogether.

on the other hand , if i do this to a modern painting, or to a photograph from a stock photography site, will it not be copyright infringement?

If i duplicate a video feed of the same cricket match, am i not pirating cable ?

If i reverse engineer a device i own even if it were for my own use, will i not be infringing a patent?

I Sing. I've sung in choirs and all sorts of church events. I'd probably not get paid even if i ask for it, but heck, even the thought of asking to be paid did not occur to me. I sing because i like it :). Till the advent of recording media, most people sang either paid performances or because they liked it. And even for most paid performances, it was not like people were banned from accidentally listening to it

I had a few friends in a college band. One of the local TV channels agreed to film one of their shows. We were more than thrilled. After the show, the band asked for a copy of the video. they didnt give them citing some sort of copyright issues. My friends sure as hell didnt sign any contract.

And when we used a video capture of the tv channel's broadcast, they started making all sorts of noises about illegal use of their material.

sometimes we need to check if the ones we're paying are really the ones who deserve to be.

IF any of the bands/singers i like decide to do what radiohead did recently, I'd get their stuff for sure. As of now, the stuff isnt even available in india.

art and software are entirely different IMHO. I dont endorse software piracy at all But even to that , there are limits - I dont agree with the concept of 'licensing' software and EULA's.

When I buy a pair of speakers, nothing stops me from taking it apart and swapping the op amps and capacitors. why am i not allowed to do that to my OS, for which I paid for ?

Except those aren't examples of piracy.
