Pls suggest a 42"+ Full HD LCD TV

@ Mod - You were the one who started the kiddish arguments ;)

As for LCD v/s Plasma, the smaller the screen, more it hints towards LCD, the larger the display, better buy is Plasma.

And LCD's are not perfect. They end up with hell lotta dead pixels, and the cheaper panels have ghosting, poor viewing angles and inaccurate colour reproduction.

All you talk about is the Bravia X (Which is arguably the world's best LCD panel atm), but 2 Large for a friggin 40" display is insane.

Its easy to say LCD is a newer technology, etc, etc, budget is a totally different consideration ;)

checked out the prices of the Sony Bravia X series in the grey market.
40" (made in thailand) - 1.3L
40" (made in japan) - 1.5L
46"(thailand) - 1.6L(or 1.7 cant recollect since I wasnt interested in Thailand ones)
46"(japan) - 1.9L
The guy assured(they always do!) that its original and I can check the TV properly and then pay and he will get it fixed if it goes kaput. The prices look tempting but not sure if its worth risking so much to save a few.

The Bravia does not have any problems with jerkiness in fast scenes? Last time I checked, the Aquos had very good image quality but jerked quite a bit in fast panning scenes. The Philips with Pixel Plus didnt show any jerkiness for the same scenes. Does Plasma suffer from jerkiness in fast panning scenes? I cant seem to find any dealer carrying Hitachi Plasmas in Bangalore, would love to have a look at it. The price looks too sweet for its specs.

I intend to mainly watch movies on the TV, maybe hookup my old PS2 and play like a cpl of hrs every couple of weeks or so.

There you go. I was *very* tempted to buy grey, but a couple of stuck pixels within a week of your purchase and you gotta live with that forever mate ;)

If you interested in Hitachi, get in touch with me, I know the West/South India sales manager personally, I can work something out surely. They ship to your doorstep btw, with full warranty ;)

Anish Thx. could you pls send me the contact details of the Hitachi person/s? Or any place in Bangalore where I can have a demo.

mod_to_odd - Its better you go read a bit and then come back here.

The Bravia X series kinda matches a Plasma, but its still gotta catch up. Your talking contrast ratio, Plasma is 15k:1 beat that duh. LCD's are still not up there with Plasmas YET.

As for brands, Hitachi is one of the best plasmas, along with Pio, and Panasonic.

For LCD's its Sony, Sharp and Toshiba along with the Samsung Mosel's (which are reportedly OEM's Tosh's).
True, its 1024x1080 (42") and 1280x1080 (50"), which is still nautical miles ahead of a HD-Ready LCD.
Yaar.. not nautical miles ahead.. the latest Sammie LCDs are quite good.. I'd say maybe a 5-10% diff at max? Contrast levels on the Hitachi are awesome, but the motion handling on teh LCD seemed a bit better to me..(yep, I auditioned the Hitachi as well ;) )

^ I was referring to the HD-Ready Sammy's. The Mosel's all start 2L, which is ridiculous to say the least for a 40" display ;)

^ Ahh okay, I missed the new series. You talking about this I see, haven't demoed it so can't comment :(

I have a Samsung 32R8 also, which is good no doubt but I still find my Hitachi to be a lot better.

In the end its the money your spending to be frank, but the 1.4L deal is great, will test that set ASAP and let you guys know :)

The best 40"-42" LCD is the sharp and the Bravia. But a better choice would be Sharp because it has just 6ms response time and is cheaper than sony. It also has a feature called as quick shot which reduces motion blurring to a great extent. And by the way, Sharp is the #1 brand selling LCD company in Japan.
The sharp 42" is for 1.30lkhs with warranty here in Mumbai :)

Dude if you are comparing LCD to PLASMA then any day LCD is a better choice. I am no expert but if you read reviews on cnet and their buying guides you will know. Both the displays have their advantages and disadvantages but any day LCD is better IMO. The black levels of Bravia are kick ass without a doubt. For gaming LCD is a much better choice over plasmas. The main thing is that LCD displays have way better life span compared to Plasmas i,e 60,000 hours or more. See this link, it will clear all misconceptions. :)
LCD TV vs Plasma TV Which is Best? from LCD TV Buying Guide

@mod_to_odd

Dude, from your link, I've summarized the following --

PICTURE CONSIDERATIONS
CONTRAST / BLACK LEVELS - Plasma
COLOR ACCURACY - Plasma
VIEWING ANGLES - Plasma
FUNCTIONAL CONSIDERATIONS
COMPUTER USE - LCD
FAST-MOVING VIDEO PLAYBACK - Plasma
HIGH ALTITUDE - LCD
LONGEVITY - Even
SCREEN BURN IN - LCD, but current Plasma TVs address that problem

OTEHR CONSIDERATIONS
PRODUCTION SIZE AND COST - Plasma
POWER CONSUMPTION - LCD
PRICE AND RESOLUTION - It's currently a toss-up.
LCD only wins in Computer use (you won't use a 42" computer screen for sure) High Altitude (not sure about you, but I live on the ground) and Power Consumption.

The most important factors I feel are CONTRAST / BLACK LEVELS, COLOR ACCURACY, VIEWING ANGLES, FAST-MOVING VIDEO PLAYBACK (LCDs are pretty bad at that), LONGEVITY and PRODUCTION SIZE AND COST (A third of LCDs) and from your linky Plasma wins in all of these ... What did you base your opinion on?? Did you ever read the article ?? :@

How is the HD playback on that Hitachi? Have you tried some 720p clips on it? I couldn't.. and a new PS3 with upscaling is in my near future, so if it's better on the Hitachi, I can pay the (minimal) price diff and get the Hitachi...

My dear friend RISHIA :) We are not debating here who is a winner and who is a looser. Both are excellent displays in their own ways. Its very simple . If a person wants to do gaming and see HD movies then its better that he goes for an LCD. That link i gave was just for reference and that does not mean that you blindly start judging by what it says.

You guys are behaving like i dont know what to say. The new sharp model the Sharp Aquos LC-46G7M has a response time of 4ms and also has great viewing angles which makes it one of the fastest and best LCD in the market, and why dont you go and see the difference between an LCD and PLASMA for your self in any good showroom. And why would any one not use a 40" LCD in computing?

If you want to game or watch movies from your pc, then the 40" becomes the best experience you ever had. All i am saying is that these days LCD is prefered over Plasma in most of the homes and if you ask me why is that then you already know the answer. :peace:

I can play HD through regular DVD's ? :S

I'll be hooking my desktop to the TV with a DVI -> HDMI cable and then run 720p and 1080p clips.

I'm also working on a TV guide, will report results there :D

^Eeeep.. my bad.. I meant that the new PS3, with the DVD upscaling FW 1.80 will upscale 576p DVDs to 720p and 1080p, and do it quite well.
Let us know the HD playback results..

^ Man, my dad will chuck me outta the house if I even remotely think of a PS3

And why is that ?

LCD's have the ghosting problem, not Plasma's ;)

Dear Anish i just did mention one of the specs of the new sharp aquos :D . Its 4ms response time, so where can you see ghosting in that????????? :D and that is pretty sweet for an LCD.

I checked out the Hitachi Plasma 42" - the picture wasnt as sharp as the Hitachi LCDs and the guy wouldnt come down on the price of 1.3L but was willing to throw in the motorized swivel stand(10k) for free.

Checked out the Full HD Sony 42" - the picture was really good but the very noticable jerks(I-Robot DVD) on fast panning scenes made it unworthy of 2L.
Philips Pixel plus LCDs and the New Samsung 40"(with movie plus) didnt show any noticable jerks in fast panning scenes but these are 720p

Finally I picked up the Sony Bravia 55E200A projection TV.

Sony India - like no other

Though its 720p the size and quality of the image is pretty awesome. It cost me 99k and the guy threw in a free stand with the TV. It seems a little big for a bedroom but its fun watching Jack Bauer do his stuff lifesize! The guys didnt have the 50" ones in stock(which seemed a lil better VFM)

Guess my Full HD dreams will have to wait another year hopefully by then HD content is more easily available here.
Thanks to all the guys who replied with a lot of useful info. and views. Realy appreciate it :)

Oh Gosh! That screen is dady . Anyway congrats on your purchase.

Oh my. I don't mean to dampen your spirit mate, but the reason I didn't buy that screen (i was almost done with it) was that production has been stopped 6 months back.

I'm really sorry to have told you this, but having said that, that's a VERY CAPABLE display, its a 3LCd projection and as long as your room is big enough you'll throughly enjoy it !

Congrats :D
