Those external scores are insane... how did u manage them? Cos the theoretical max of a usb device is 480mbps(60 MB/s) and NVIDIA usb barely manages 35MB/s. Is this casing using eSATA?

YUP this is a Vantec eSATA case .... This reading is with the HDD running with an eSATA cable .... but you have to get a cool running HDD otherwise it will burn your HDDs - I got 63C HDD temp when formating a Maxtor 120GB SATA1 HDD in the case !! :O

I checked out the reports in Storagereview forum for the coolest decent speed HDD and there are 2 one is this Hitachi and the other is a super slim 1" high Seagate ST3160811AS - both the Hitachi and Seagate are single platter 160GB HDDs. The Seagate was not available so I took the Hitachi. Paid APEX 2850/- for each of these Hitachi 160GB SATA II - bought two.

This Hitachi idles at 34C in my computer case and 38C in the External case - the other drives I tried idled in the external case at around 50+C !!! :O

Didn't get a chance to post my scores before, but here they are:

Hard Disk - Seagate 160 GB Sata II with perpendicular recording(ncq disabled)

Model No - ST3160211As

Athlon 64 3200+ at stock

Asus A8N-E

Seek Time - 16.7 ms

Burst Transfer - 226.9 mb/s

AVG read - 61.1 mb/s

do you think the reason behind the high seek times is the low buffer size of 2 mb? also what might be the reason behind the high CPU usage?
