I get the exact same average transfer rate and no amount of tweaking has made me get even a piddly 0.1 MB/s improvement - seems these HDDs are locked at this transfer rate :)

What price did you pay for these Hitachi 320GB HDDs ? Where did you buy them from ? I was given a lower price for the 320GB Seagate compared to the Hitachi :(
