Got a new hitachi 320 yesterday, which turned out bad. Made lots of noise, copying files took ages, and it showed errors in SMART :(

So, I got it replaced today, but seems there are problems with this one as well. SMART is fine, but file copying is a bit slow, and it does make too much noise. So I tried HD Tune. Here are the screenshots -

Here are my other hdds for comparisions -
Hitachi 250gb

Seagate 320

Seems like I'll have to return this and get a seagate :(

the current batch might be faulty as i get no problems on my same Hitachi 320GB "touches wood" or maybe hitachi hates you :P

BTW, what do I tell at the shop? Cause technically, the drive is working.
^^ Hitachi doesn't hate me. My 250gb works fine :P

Some time back Storagereview had done a survey on bad HDDs and had concluded that the possible main cause of HDDs failure is the result of bad handling by the couriers.... a particular courier in the States was found to be handling most of the HDDS which were defective.

I have seen that the new Hitachi HDDs are now being supplied Made in China whilst the earlier ones were Made in Thailand. Dont know if this has anything to do with the problem. I have 4 160GB Hitachi's - 3 are Thai made and one is Chinese - I see no difference in Speeds or Noise or Temperatures.

First I would suggest you try another DATA cable and connect HDD to another SATA port and if that does NOT show any improvement then I would suggest take a printout of these 2 and take it to the supplier - most probably you will not have a problem in getting the HDD exchanged. I did this once when the only Seagate I bought last year (a 200GB 7200.8) showed a lot of SMART errors .... on seeing the print out the dealer had no problem exchanging the HDD for a Hitachi .... I did not want to buy a Seagate after that experience :ohyeah:

East or West Seagate is the best, if you do not tamper with them Seagate runs absolutely smooth. I have seen in Customer Reviews in newegg.com that so many Hitachi, Maxtor dies in 4-18 months. I still beleive that in terms of reliability and durability there's nothing like Seagate.

HDD may not be getting proper power. Check the power cable contact or exchange it with another connector from your PSU. Also check the data cable contact and replace it if possible. Do these basic two steps just to be sure. It seems unlikely that both the drives you received could be successfully defective. But as others have said, it might be a batch issue.

If all fails, ask the seller to replace the Hitachi with a Seagate HDD of same capacity. Ask him the seagate HDD price first and tell him you'll pay Rs 200/- or so more in exchange to whet his appetite for commission.

As a service to other members, maybe you can post details of the model no. and where it is manufactured so we can avoid it like the plague :P . But I really am hoping that your problem gets solved.

I have 9 Hitachi HDDs the oldest is a 80GB I have used since 5 years. No Hitachi HDD has died on me yet...... TOUCH WOOD !!....

The Seagate 7200.8 HDDs had a bad reputation and now the 7200.10 series HDDs also have bad reports.... if you want to know about the problems of the Seagate 7200.10 series read this thread - specially the last few pages....

Seagate 7200.10 Review - Discussion@SR

There is nothing like a perfect HDD brand ... all HDD makes have had their bad series at some time or the other. Every time a HDD series has a problem the manufacturer makes sure his next model will be perfect. They better be or the company will go BUST.

I returned it yesterday (to Prime). Meenal said she'll get it checked first from her engineer, and then replace it with a seagate.

^^ Sydras, "successfully defective"? BTW, why do you think I'll pay 200 extra? :S The seagate costs just 75 bucks more. I'll infact try to avoid paying even that.

And everyone, please stop your hitachi bashing and your Seagate fanboism. This is just one bad batch, could happen to anyone. :P

I absolutely agree! Just for info sake - which is the current HDD model to look out for at the moment? :D

P.s: Sorry zhop for thread-jacking ;)

The Hitachi T7K500 look good these days (this is the wrong thread in which to sing Hitachi's praises :) ) .... the Seagate 7200.10 are the ones giving a little trouble these days ... not much news on the current Samsungs - a very small user base to make any conclusions ... the WD are looking good (I have never been a WD fan) ... the current Maxtors are now made by Seagate and after the DM8 and DM9 debacles no one wants to touch Maxtors any more.... I know I dont. As for the Fujitsu's and Toshiba's HDDs people say ...... "what they make HDDs too ? " :O

i just returned a seagate 7200.10 250 gb that died on me in under 3 months, and it totally gave up th ghost, so much so that i couldn't even retrieve data from it :(

SAD !!! :( Did you try the freeze-the-drive and retrieve-the-data trick ?

zhop...donno what you find funny...I meant one after the other. Anyways...also, I thought you might be in trouble returning the hitachi for the 2nd time(you mentioned that technically, the drive is working.). Dealers can be hard to convince sometimes and may flat out refuse to take back a 2nd piece saying that your PC is to blame esp if the drive is working.
But, good to know that he accepted your HDD back without fuss.

ot - sorry for jacking thread. just got the seagate 320gb sv35 series. any idea how they are. supposed to have fast transfer speeds but little higher read times.

Did you get this because 7200.10 was not available?? I'm going to get a seagate now. Will this sv35 be ok for normal desktop use? I plan to install vista on this.

Ok, had gone to prime today. After making me wait for an hour :@, meenal said that she can give me a 300gb seagate from her old stock. WTF! :@ I insisted that I wanted a new drive. She said that her engineer had checked my hdd, and found it to be working fine.
I again told her that if I could just come face to face with that engineer, I'll be able to show him the exact problem. For that, I had to again wait for an hour. As I had already wasted over a week on this stupid thing, I decided an hour wasn't a big thing :P
So I roamed around lamington, had a sandwich, some lassi, and some carrot juice with loads of artificial color :P. Then, I called up Bikey, and chatted for about 10 mins. He's better now , but the medicines make him sleep almost all day. He's only switched on his PC a couple of times, and was astonished to get 200kbps on mtnl :D
Then I told him to go back to sleep, and went back to Prime. The engineer, Datta, arrived after 10mins. We attached the hdd, and I installed HD Tune on his machine. This time, the result was not as bad as the one I've posted above, but had enough spikes to create some doubt in Datta's mind. We then tested another WD of his, which gave a nice clean result (42mb/s). I also showed him the screenshots of my other two drives. Then, he got a new hitachi drive. We ran the benchmark, which started from 78mbps! :O It ran steady for a couple of seconds, and I thought this was one awesome drive :D, when HD Tune reported a Read Error! A quick scan showed a couple of bad sectors :P
We connected the first hitachi once again, and ran a quick scan. There were no bad sectors. Then we ran the benchmark again, and just at the end, it gave a Read Error!
So finally, even meenal had to agree that the drive was bad. But as it was almost 8pm, she couldn't do anthing today, and said she'll surely have something for me tommorow.

What! Making you wait for an hour?! And I thought its the men who are usually late on a date! :@

Well hopefully tomorrow's drive will be better - pick a scenic route this time, not too much traffic. And oh yeah i'm sure she'll have "something" for you tomorrow :ohyeah:
