I'm in the same boat as you, just finished up with 2nd year (that is if I managed to pass, lol).

Of course, I don't think I'm going to be eligible to sit for any campus placements cuz of my marks, nor do I want to.

However, I do plan to pursue a degree related to Entrepreneurship/Business Technology, and startup my own firm. And hire the geeks who are mugging up programs and slogging right now. :)

Programming isnt abt mugging.Look at companies which create exceptional products like adobe,Rational,Microsoft. They have all tech people in their ranks all the way upto the top.
For example I had written a module in my previous company which will handle 60,000 calls .Tell me which book will give you the code for this. :bleh:.You can solve complex day to day problem by the use of programming .Thats what geeks do and not mug up.

If you think that by joining a enterprunership prg ,you can start a firm without understanding the nitty gritty of software. Then all the best.:)

Folks @ my office work on everything from embedded system drivers in linux to lingerie catalogs :P

Now thats interesting , which company btw ?

Even i m new to this IT world.Just around a month. It took us a week to get systems allotted. Another week to set up mail addresses. Another week to get a tool on which we would be working installed and now we are waiting for a version control tool on our systems so that we can start working ..

We dont even have the admin privileges for our system. So, even a small change would require help from technology people who would ask to raise a service request.. blah blah..

Satyam sux big time with that security and all . I heard even Accenture is taking a security deposit.

Acc doesnt take a security deposit but you do have to sign a form saying ull be there one year or ull be fined 50k or so that comes out of your salary after you are sent to the bench

cyrux, you highlighted the wrong part of the line :P

heh, anyday 50k's better than 2 lakhs :@ However, dint know that accenture had a bond

its not a bond...its a service agreement :P
i submitted mine 6 months late after i started getting ultimatums from HR :p

ok guys. here is my POV.

I joined this IT giant last year and was trained in open systems (C,C++, VB, Oracle, Unix).

I knew only a little bit of C, SQL and C++ while joining and actually didn't have the guts to try for any startups.

But the training was really good and I became a _decent_ VB,C,CPP coder within 4 months.

There was a bond for 1 year, but ppl can quit if they are going to join a non-IT company (MS / MBA / ISRO / whatever... just non-IT).

There is a lot of bussiness units here and you get posted to a bussiness unit based on company requirements and not your preference.

There is a research wing where there is exciting and challenging work, but some people are put there (after training) purely randomly. Even the training scores are not considered before allocation.

There is scope for embedded programming also, but then, the chances of getting allocated there is also very slim.

Even mech guys can get allocated to CAD/CAM work. A mech guy I know was involved in the design of the airbus A380.

In the end, its pure luck.

To know more, PM.

I am pretty sure u guys understood which company I am working for.

Some of these posts just make me believe that I'll be doing the right thing when I join the armoured corps after finishing my BCA. Sofware ain't for me. Coding goes over my head and the only thing I enjoy doing with a computer is playing games, troubleshooting and screwing around with other computers connected to my college Wi-Fo.

Sometimes I think, Maybe I want to join the Army. I mean, its Basically like FPS, but with better graphics! But what happens if i get lag out there? I'M DEAD! I even heard theres no respawn points in RL!

Oh god dammit.. I never factored in the lag.. Anyways, I am more inclined towards the tech heavy, intelligence side. Since I could'nt get into the airforce (terrible eyesight), I'd be happy to get into armoured or one of the field artillery regiments.

Of course I would love to get into RAW but I doubt they'd want an internet warrior geek who could explain the difference between the severodvinsk class and the 093 class PLAN SSN's but who'd get screwed up if he had to fire a gun at someone lol. : )

engineers are recruited directly by the army. we had an army recruitment at our engg college.

post army, its easy to get into HR depts etc :P
