So where did you head for Gangster Squad?.

It was quite a task obtaining tickets for this one. Friend had asked for a 7pm-ish show, and i had zeroed on spice mall, noida. They cancelled the show.
Next targeted the 9pm show, they cancelled that as well. Finally went to Wave Cinema (CSM Noida) @ 11:15pm, fully prepared for an underperformer.

Couldnt overlook the fact that director/writer prolly ended up playing hot potato* after assembling the cast. Just nothing noteworthy from the movie.

Had 3 college freshman type guys sitting behind who kept giggling like girls. As if the bad movie wasnt enuf, i keep getting this 'package deal' even with expensive shows.

I was waiting for a Good cop-Bad cop conundrum to come up, never did. :annoyed:
I agree the cast was underutilized

I was expecting something like The Untouchables with a hint of Michael Bay. First thoughts emanating from the trailer was that the hip treatment will spoil the 40s touch. Then changed track to back the touch up thinking that maybe it ll be just the thrust a 40s piece might be looking for. But everything just was badly thought up. No impact scenes, no cliched routines, and bad camerawork to boot. But i saw a depression era movie on 70mm.. Yay!

 Thankfully I had an emptier (and more pricey) Afternoon show.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - 8/10

No one should compare this series to the LOTR. The theme and mood is quite different. Lot of humorous moments. Especially the goblin king was hilarious. I expected more screen time of gollum. They could have trimmed a bit in the first 40 mins but I guess being the 1st one of a trilogy does require a bit of context setting. Marteen Freeman was a stand out. The best of his performances I have seen so far.

Overall, it is really an adventure.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - 8/10

Amen, really well done film.

Pacing although some people will dislike is very apt for the first part of a saga. Character development is good although deviates from the book in a few ways (same with the story).

3D is very well used and does not look over-done OR overtly subtle.

It is an Unexpected Adventure, just as you feel the film could not get any slower the action is ratcheted up, characters are thrown into precarious situations and the end is satisfying yet beckons you on towards the next part of the saga that will release the end of this year.

Naan Ee (Tamil) - 9/10

OMG what a brilliant movie! :hail:

Hats off to S.S. Rajamouli and Crazy Mohan for turning a sh1tty idea into a fantastic script. For those who are wondering, the movie is about a guy who is reborn as a fly who intends to take revenge against his murderer. Sounds crappy? The movie and the SFX were amazing for a Tamil movie. SFX almost as good as Shankar's movies.

I guess the same movie is being released in Hindi as Makkhi.
I saw the trailer - felt interesting. Gotta watch it.

Being released? It's already done. I saw it playing on TV a few days ago. The acting by Kannada actor Sudeep as a villain is excellent, goes to show you that the actors can excel if given better scripts.

^Yup, Sudeep is an excellent actor. But I did not like that movie that much. Felt typical telugu-ish movie.

Sudeep has done excellent job in movie Rann. But movie is not that great.

Lord of War

A Scanner Darkly:
Not a pleasant film, but well stylized and adaptation of a novel for the film by Philip K. Dick (responsible for Minority Report and BladeRunner amongst others).

Lord of War:
Half-satire, half-biographical about the trials and tribulations of a neo Arms dealer based on the real life account of Viktor Bout - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Thanks. It caught my interest because of animation & Robert Downey Jr. I did not know it's based on a book. How's the novel ? If it is good, then I will read book first & then watch the movie..

It is not animation per-say, it is a technique called Roto-scoping Rotoshop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which is used. The film was shot using camera and then the artistes painted, lined and coloured the individual frames to achieve the look.

Although the technique itself is not new it was revived by Richard Linklater who directed another film -- Waking Life, which pioneered this style.

Another film that comes to mind with the same style is Waltz with Bashir.

Have not read the short-story so I cannot comment on it. Sorry.

Hope this helps and happy viewing. Cheers!

P.S. -- Avoid the film tie-in release and read the older book.

Layercake comes to mind.
Saw Layer Cake. It's a brilliant movie ! Tight script, twisted humor & a great cast. Enjoyed !

You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake son.
