Need some help here,

I want to buy an uber cool gaming computer for my boyfriend.

I have already looked around over the internet, result is that now i know, buying something like that directly off the shelf is not possible at least here in Delhi.

Custom built computer system is the only solution.

I want to know, where to start.

Pls keep in mind, that i need something that doesn't require any updates at least for an year. It should be able to play any game in the best possible manner. It should look sublime.

Help me all you gizmo freaks.

I had customize an Alienware PC to max, it came around 10k (5 lacs in INR). I dont have that much, thats almost my 6 months salary. I will be happy, if it manages to remain under half of that, 5k USD (2.5 lacs in INR).

I use to think that desktops are cheaper than laptops.

I am sure others will chime in with suggestions, but I wanted to say something about your budget.

If you say you have a budget of 2.5lacs, people will make suggestions to use that amount.

I would say , stick to you requirement, (for example, 26inch monitor + gaming system that will be top of the line for 1 year.)

That won't cost more than 1lac (that is a very large budget...)

You can buy him another after one year.

I bought a very good system with a 24inch monitor about one year ago for 1200USD. Still plays all games at full resolution, high details.

yea exactly ......2.5 lacs is wayyy to much !!! .... be sensible and buy a great system for 1.2-1.3 lakh... it will serve ur bf's purpose well for almost 2 years !!!! And about the config, i am feeling sleepy ryt now ... so will come back tomorrow for that. But most probably, u will get some good configs till then !!!

So all the best !!!

May God Bless everyone with a GF like you ......:), ur bf must be verry lucky !!!

P.s.: Dont get me wrong, but if u live anywhere near North Delhi (Not much chances for that though), u can contact me, i can arrange any hardware you want, at ur doorstep !!!

Core i7 975 - 50k ( a i7 920 at 15k will be good enough also )

Gigabyte EX58-UD5 - 17k

Corsair dominator 6gb / gskill trident ram -10-12k

1TB-2TB hdds - 4k/tb

Corsair HX620w - 7.5k

GTX 295 - 30k

G15 keyboard - 5k

Razer DA or any other mouse - 3-5k

Haf 932 - 10k

thanks whatsinaname ( are you a FTN (**** the name) fan?)

My requirements:

1. A system that doesnt need 30 min of your time everyday, to make it work as it should.

2. Doesnt need any extra component once its done, for an year at least.

3. Best performing, if it under performed the existing setup then it wont be any better than a piece of junk for me.

4. Good looking, my office`s workstations looks far better than what he has now.

to give you all a perspective, Last year i read somewhere that Sony Playstation 3 has kick ass hardware, bought one of those and he never uses it.

I know i am really very amateur for being here, this place is for serious stuff from what i have seen n read till now on this forum.

but this is really really important for me, so help me out.

Yeah, I would say the same thing as the above member's. There is a point after which further investment on PC would not render any value in return and would just be a brag factor. A High end PC is not just about how much money you spent, but about fine tuning the configuration to your requirement under a decent budget.

Here's an outline configuration that you can further fine tune.

CPU: Core i7 920/950

Mother Board: X58 Motherboard with Crossfire/SLI support (EVGA/Gigabyte/Asus)

RAM:
6 GB of DDR3 RAM @ 1600/2000 MHz (GSkill/Corsair/OCZ)

Graphics Card: I would recommed waiting for the next gen cards that will get released in 2 months, GTX295 or 2 x GTX285 SLI if you cannot wait.

Sound Card: Creative X-Fi Titanium Fata1ty Pro/Auzentech X-Fi Forte/Asus Xonar D2X

Hard Disk: 2 x 1.5 TB (Western Digital/Seagate)

Cabinet: Antec 1200/CM ATCS 840

PSU: Corsair HX750/HX850/Corsair HX1000 depending on requirement. I would strongly recommend a Corsair HX1000. That way, even if there are going to be upgrades after an year, there would be no need to upgrade the PSU.

Display: Dell U2410 24" LCD Display.

Keyboard: Logitech G15/Ideazon Merc Stealth/TVS Gold/Any other that takes your BF's fancy.

Mouse: There are a tonne of choices and not all are suitable for everyone. So let your BF take his pick.

Do note that I have touched on only the main components.

I can help, but first I need to know what your boyfriend actually does. Is he employed? For how long he will gaming everyday?

to Morgoth,

What does that has to do with his computer?

He is doing MBA. I dont know how much time he gives to gaming, but you can assume 2hrs/day.

thank you sir Lord Nemesis, i have few questions

1. Aint those solid state drive better than hard disk drives? i have one of those in my laptop.

2. I didnt like the cabinet (googled it), how is Cosmos 1000, saw it on CM`s site.

3. how will a amp + speaker combo be for sound system? i mean for gaming, i use it for music n movies. I have Onkyo s7200, its awesome. Will it be good for gaming too/

4. Monitor seems a bit small to me, cant i buy something bigger?

5. Whats the process of building a PC, i know i will have to go to that piss drenched Nehru place, i know few shops there too but i dont want to go there, they know me n my friend too well. You are from Mohali i can see but just in case you know any good shop there then pls let me know.

1) The only solid state drive I would recommend right now is the Intel X25-M second generation. I don't know for sure if it's available in India, and if it is , what the premium would be. (Amazon and Newegg just recently started receiving stock after the firmware fix.)

2,3,4) Monitor, Peripherals, Speakers etc are your choice. What you need from the technical end is

RAM

HDD

Motherboard + Processor

Graphics Card

Power Supply

5) If you haven't done this before, the best way is to get hold of a friend who has done it before and let him/her do it for you. Or get the shop guy to do it.

Firstly, what is the existing setup? Saying its an Alienware custom PC that (used to) cost 5 lakh INR is like saying you've got a Honda S2000 with "a 100 grand under the hood" (F&F anyone? :P) . This is critical information considering the fact that you'll be spending ~lakh(s) of dough on "junk" otherwise.

Would suggest you read this,:- http://www.techenclave.com/pc-peripherals/notice-all-those-who-need-help-138633.html
And this:- http://www.techenclave.com/pc-peripherals/template-what-should-i-buy-use-143714.html

Secondly,
Whats going to be the permanent location of this PC? Your location says Delhi/Mumbai. If Its Mumbai, then Prime ABGB is probably your best bet.
02223896600 - Ask for Swapnil/Meenal.

PS: Get the guy to register here and post pics. once the build is complete.

Considering the dude doesn't use his PS3, which is just about as good as any decent gaming rig around; are you sure you're making the right decision in buying him a gaming PC?

And if you're still hellbent on getting him to game, I'd suggest you buy a decent plasma and home theater system to go with the PS3. You might want to consider getting his room soundproofed. The whole thing might even turn out to be cheaper than your 2.5 lakh budget. The remaining money can be used to acquire the latest PS3 games. :)

Also, let me add that you're one hell of a girlfriend. :D

@T110001

First of all, Welcome to TE. :)

Now, lemme clear a few things before we start to rain some configs.

You said, you would like to build a system which won't be needed to be upgraded for a year and also you want this computer blazing fast for gaming. Fine. But that type of machine can be easily built well within 1L budget. Secondly, spending a huge amount on computers will make you feel a lot happy that you gave a super high end computer to your bf. But the point is, every 3-6 months, there are new computer peripherals coming and they will be more powerful and might be yet less costly. So think many times before you commit lakhs of money. Well you have the every right to spend your money.

Now, back to the suggestions.

As you have a huge budget, you will be strongly recommended by many of us to wait for 1-2 months. There are two reasons. 1. Intel are gonna launch new high end i9 processors very soon. 2. AMD will release their newest and fastest graphic cards which are the first to support DX11. Also they will be less pricey than the current GTX295.

Meanwhile, you can choose/buy the other peripherals like hard disk, monitor, sound card, speaker, cabinets, SMPS etc. But if you buy everything at one time, the shop guys will assemble the computer for you.

For monitors, I'd suggest to get a 24" IPS panel.

For cabinets, consider these - XClio, NZXT, Antec, Cooler Master etc. Visit their sites, choose the model and enquire about the availability. Most of the high end cabinets are not available readily. In that case, KMD or FizzMall can help you getting those imported. :)

HDD - Solid state drives are still in their teenage. So rather invest in a 150GB Western Digital Velociraptor for boot & gaming drive and for storage consider 2x1TB Western Digital Black in Raid 0.

Then your best bet is, buy the peripherals from online dealers from TE and/or like primeabgb. Then hire a good pro to assemble your computer if you can't do it yourself. Because, for high end products, local dealer charges very high to get a hefty profit and will convince you that the products are not available so they had to import etc. etc.

Hfff... I need to breath. :P

hi Amen,

Getting info about his existing setup tough for me, because i have very limited knowledge about computer hardware and he never lets me play around with his system.

but i think i will be able to get the system properties (right click my computer) of his PC.

I live n Delhi but my family is in Mumbai, so i spend a lot time in Mumbai too. PC is for Delhi.

Yeah sure, If the system turned out good, then i guess it wont be very tough.

Thank you very much for giving my cause a serious thought.

Tanya

Hi ajish65,

His peeps already have a very nice TV room, i dont think he would like to have a HTS for his own room.

PS3 is very underpowered for him, according to him.

thanks

"every 3-6 months, there are new computer peripherals coming and they will be more powerful and might be yet less costly. So think many times before you commit lakhs of money."

I know, thats why i have to get him something thats so powerful that it doesnt need anything new for an year. but on second thoughts, now i am thinking that my whole plan is ****ed up because if something more powerful turns up, he will be getting it for his PC, n again he will end up in the same cycle. Why cant Microsoft be like Apple, with apple you get the assurance that for at least an year what you have is the best?

Thanks Sabby, really appreciate your effort.

well if a PS3 is "very underpowered" for him i don't know what will make him happy.

people at TE have shifted over to PS3 from their PC as it is one of the best consoles for gaming.

anyways this is not the right time for buying a PC as new better and powerful hardware is going to be released shortly. so if you do want to give him the best you'd better wait.

and to put things in perspective, nothing remains the best for more than 2-3 months in the hardware business. however if you wait and buy the upcoming hardware you'll surely be at peace for the next 2 years at least.

till this day too there aren't many games barring a few that challenge the hardware and most of these games are badly optimized.

however just to add more fuel to the fire, when i'm going to build my multimedia-cum-gaming rig, i won't go for lcd screens, i'll buy a projector instead.

hell yeah, i've played on it once and boy does it feel good. it looks that the players are right there on my wall.

well anyways good luck and i hope he is happy with what you get him. or just show him this thread.
