I would also recommend santro, WR , Estilo above Indica coz of reliablity issues. More specific i would recommend Estilo ( having driven WR, Santro ). I feel its more sporty though specs below the hood are the same as WR. It has what all your dad needs at this age, plus its cheaper than WR.

Though you said roads are bad, but that should not be a problem with a car with decent height and long suspension travel. Plus the factor being more sporty and best option coz santro is more dated in looks now.

Though i would suggest your dad take a test drive, which IMO is the best way to decide. Go for the base model and then you can gift your dad a ICE system with your salary ;)
ambassador ? :P

EASY TO DRIVE , small :P
Hehe slightly OT, but i was walking home a few days back and spotted an ambassador with "Power Steering" :ohyeah:

Had a quick peek through the window and even noticed a bit of a sporty-looking steering wheel! :O (No idea if this was part of the power steering package or whether the owner had made the modification.)

Just stick a political party flag in the front and people will think your dad is Karunanidhi

Well no one talking here about used cars. Look around for some good used cars since the budget has its constraints....Maruti TrueValue maybe ?

Getting a Maruti would be wise for a first car plainly for maintenance reasons. Estilo, Alto, Wagon R and the last generation Zen should be what you should be looking for....

EDIT :jus read the NO SECOND HANDS line in the first post :P .... but it wouldn't hurt to check out a few used cars .... Either way , maruti is the way to go IMO...

Why don't you go for maruti Zen ????? It handles the abuse well and will fall within your budget.

I am from tvm and my uncles got one......Going strong for 2 1/5 yrs....

That's the old one.....that was built superbly.... the new one looks and feels flimsy. Flimsier than the Santro also.... And since it has just been launched, no one knows how it will take the abuse of Indian roads....

Get the Indica Xeta, nice spacious car, good suspension. However develops probs as it ages and tata support is nothing great to write about. I'd recommend the estilo and xing too but they are nowhere as spacious/rugged as the indica. Dont think about the m800 or alto, they are nowhere as vfm as the xeta or the other cars. The palio is a great car as well with a redesign in works but it falls under the premium hatch so it'll prolly overshoot your budget by quite a lot.

Wagon R
- Handles bumpy roads quite well :thumb:
- Maruti (Great Service, cheaper to maintain) :thumb:
- Now comes in an LPG version :thumb:
- Might cross your budget
Indica
- Strong, Rugged :thumb:
- Diesel :thumb:
- 2 years and the problems begin
- Pain in the ass service

:O i just had a look at the estilo and was like :O:O:O

damn that car's tall, yet doesnt look boxy

i think I've already decided. Lemme see if i can talk dad into it :D

Decided on what ??

Also take a test drive of estilo. I liked it very sporty. The thing i liked the most in estilo was the gear know ( which is from swift ). Gearbox seems to be bit more refined that WR.

yes Estilo is good...but not sure if its for rough rural roads..Also I noticed sometimes it has a tendency to topple on sharp bends...
But a good car overall...

Estillo hands down... The rest of the cars are relics of yesteryear compared to the estillo. Even though there is a new version of the MR wagon out in japan, it still doesn't discount the fact that of what is available in india in ultracompacts, the estillo is the best.
