User Review Review + 15 Days With Xiaomi Red MI 1S

Synopsis :
waiting ...
Review:
Let's have a small history first. My old phones are Sony Ericsson T78i then Huawei U5510. Then I started development nokia and BlackBerry only and I won Nokia asha 510 and BlackBerry Q10.
Before using Xiaomi Red MI 1S I have used BlackBerry Q10 for a year. And I love it. Definitely Xiaomi Red MI 1S is my backup phone. My path to try Android first. Also I Have good hands on Apple iPhone 4S, Nexus 4.

15 days:
Day 1 (+ve)
First impression is phone built quality is good. Never feels like local brand feels like well built phone.

Interface is good, smooth, reminds iOS 6 every time.

Many tweaks add on in os. In built WPS office app. Works God. Writing this text on WPS text editor with swift keyboard. I came from BlackBerry Q10. So definitely compare keyboard and writing experience. Security app is collection of good software. Clean master, Anti virus, permission app are well integrated in security app.

Day 2 :
Tried installation many possible messengers. Skype hike what's app we chat all went smooth. But available ram decreases. To 150 MB types. Even if I close all apps. Then I found 2 problems 1 chrome crash 2 keyboard opening error. Google or Swift both keyboards does not open. Some times takes time some times fail to open.

Also installed all leading shopping site apps.

This is test to check low RAM performence. So definitely I hate Android for this bad OS.

So I love Q10 keyboard + performance.

Swift keyboard is near to BlackBerry keyboard. Swift can delete learnt new words that's very nice feature.

Now writing on Q10 keyboard Using Box sync.

Q10 file manager does have very good box Dropbox and one drive integration. But no such integration in Android. We can directly open cloud file in native app in Q10. In android or MIUI no such feature available. Need to download upload every time.

May be I should try different file browser like ES file manager. Than native box app.

Some apps like Chrome crashes many time and UC Browser even fail to open.

MIUI has done many good tweaks like clipboard. It stores many multiple copy data in clipboard and when you want to past we can choose what to past very nice simple add-on.

Some times auto rotation toggle lock fail to work.

AnTuTu shows phone hardware is near Google Nexus 4.

Please don't blame android, or google, MIUI is completely overhauled, blame them. I went through the MI Forums, many users are blaming MIUI for these issues.

I have a LG G2 and I have 600MB+ free ram always with apps running in background. RAM is mostly used a lot by browsers as they keep the data in memory. Also I had never faced any issues like you had described with my phone.

Chrome had crashed a total of 3 times over the past 1 year I'm using it, so Chrome is not at fault either.

Only thing Redmi has going for it is the Antutu benchmark and I guess users are finding out about the useless nature of benchmarks.

PS: I also have a Optimus L9 with much lower hardware than Redmi, its not suffering from any issues you had mentioned here. With that free RAM hangs around 150MB at high loads, else ~250MB. Don't look at free RAM, android is designed to use as much as RAM it can, so even phones with 3GB RAM might have 1GB left after prolonged use. But android is also designed to use the RAM effectively, low RAM is not supposed to cause issues, check out Moto E.

Post motorola defy era, I had never had to check how much ram i was left over with or how much ram each app was consuming. It was all seamless and smooth, even with the stock OS. same with my nexus 4.
Ofcourse the tech world has changed a lot in the past few years. Websites have become flashier and apps have become heavier. Still most modern smartphones worth their salt should handle it in their stride.
What people have experienced with miui might be down to poor coding.
Some tips :
1)Switch off google now if you dont use it regularly , same with location services.
2) Avoid task cleaners and ram boosters.
3) If there is a way to properly exit an app,use it, otherwise just move to the homescreen.. In a pinch situation the os will close it.
4) Avoid apps that are hell bent on populating your notification shade. Subway surfer is a known culprit.
5)I dont know if its possible on latest MIUI but the AOSP browser is more resource efficient then chrome although chrome is prettier.

Day 3 :
Spent many hour on heating issue and random app crash issue. Keyboard issue is still there. Fails to open many times.
Most of time my phone temp. 60 degree and any app crashes randomly.

I think my internal memory is not good may have bad sectors. Am I right? Why app crashes randomly?

I think my Xiaomi Red MI 1S experience is also learning experience.

I have captured many screen shots I will add them later

So far Q10 rocks and Red MI 1S fails

If by keyboard you mean swiftkey then uninstall it and re-install newer version from the market (5.0.4), the pre-installed is an old version something like 4.4.

One thing I would like to tell you here is u can't compare bb q10 with red mi 1s. Both are differently speced.

You are tight but basic things like keyboard should work what say?
Chrome, default browser, CPU temp, and swift keyboard all others which I have tested crash. Default browser survive very well but still crash but CPU temp, chrome keeps crashing all times also UC Browser fail to open. Should I replace handset or all handset have these issues?

Definitely I feel regret about buying this phone may be Xiaomi has dumped seriously bad lot in India market? Or just there issues are my handset specific.

I have tried removing all possible memory apps even removed Google search and Google now and tried using & Duckduckgo but no solution.

Removing memory card gives small temperature drop 60 to 55. But what is use of phone without memory card?

CPU temp app keeps crushing after some time. I have to re open every time. And I keep re opening to get enough data, I have not tried any game because of this.

@Sanav3 which keyboard you are using now? I feel problem in all keywords even Google keyboard, can you check CPU temp by CPU temp app? I am at 57 to 62 always.

My all excitement of Xiaomi Red MI 1S is lost.[DOUBLEPOST=1410745337][/DOUBLEPOST]==

@JPushkarH, I'm not facing heating problems so maybe something with the mobile which you rec'd., Flipkart may replace if you are able to prove that you got a defective piece which in this case may be tricky. BTW did you update to Version 37, if not, then you can try that, it solves some of the heating and Memory leaking problems

@JPushkarH, I'm using Transcend 32GB Class 4 card (28GB Filled), and will post my temperature screens in the evening, don't have the phone right now, but by seeing your crash screens I say there's definitely something wrong with the phone, so many crashes  , btw I'm on version 37 and I'm rooted. This is my backup phone, my main is Note 2.

Edit: Temperature Screenshots updated

I think the amount of RAM that MIUI takes is the culprit.

I have a MI3 and some of the issues were there in it too. Like the keyboard used to crash. and phone used to heat up randomly at idle (draining a lot of battery in the process) . But then there was an OTA update and these issues were resolved (well, mostly).

You can root the phone and install some new kernel and rom and it might work properly.

I'm using the redmi as daily driver-main phone, and Mi3 for online stuff, serving me well with no issues, heated up only once when i was setting up the phone
