Reviews on the new Sony LCDs?

@sei: good stuff man.

will look forward to that mini review.

Had a couple of questions:

1. Was the NX500 also on display there? Did you get a look at it? PQ matching up to this? I am really keen on picking that up in the next month or so.

2. I definitely find 2 hdmi inputs a bit short. When i'm spending that kind of money, it's really a next 10 year investment for me. Who knows how many devices one would require by then. (Laptop / PSx / Xtreamer / STB) - these are as of now. We're talking 10 years!

3. How does the new 2010 range compare with their older low end range (which was selling around the same price, the S550A series)? Are they still selling the old ones at all? The only difference i find in the specs is the intellingent picture vs the intelligent picture plus in the new ones.

Thanks!

Had a look at the EX/BX/NX LCDs today when I was buying a TV. No offense but all of them had pretty bad lag and motion seemed jittery. Plus the colors were typical sony - oversaturated and blown out. Only thing nice were the black levels. Anyway all of them paled in comparison to what I finally got - a top of the line Philips PFL9703 with a 10bit IPS 1080p panel, 100Hz scan, deep color support and very good SD processing. The colors, detail, motion resolution were significantly superior and it costed me just 56k. Plus its not made in china and doesn't have flimsy build quality as the Sonys. Only thing better on the sonys were the black levels.

If you can pick up the last few remaining 9703 TVs, at the price they are being sold at they are a complete steal.

the 9703 at 56k is indeed a great buy,no congrats without pictures:P

i agree that it has a great build quality ,being a 08 PREMIUM model better then the 09 philips lcds sold in india.
i remember seeing it a year ago when i went to purchase a lcd for my uncle ,it was good used to cost close to a lakh back then.it was pretty much on par with the older W450A sony which also had a 10 bit panel and 100hz.
the motion was indeed good a whisker better then the W450A perhaps due to the natively lower response time of the IPS or (due to 100hz of the philips.the fact that a 60hz philips is better then the 100hz lg with a similar panel).

as far as the colors its subjective ,no one can know which is better.
in the end went with the sony W450A due to better contrast and subjectively better colors and since it was bought from the grey market it was cheaper by 3k to 5k compared to the philips.
the sony lcds and most others tvs sold in 07 and 08 have better build quality then 09 and 2010 models.

but at 56k its really cheap for the overall performance.

No offense here also, but I'm ( blessed ?) with the other 95% of the crowd who doesn't have that good an eye for details.

Seriously, I went back after this post of yours and tried around 20 different movies and series (animation, action, some HD vids, series ) and I couldn't notice anything. Guess it's pretty subjective. I even had a very dirty theatre print which looked horrible on my 22" LG LCD monitor I use with my computer and it was pretty bearable too. Anyways, am going to put some pics soon. So, I'll zip my mouth till then :D

No, the NX500 was not there. The guy said that if I order, they can get it for me.

2. I definitely find 2 hdmi inputs a bit short. When i'm spending that kind of money, it's really a next 10 year investment for me. Who knows how many devices one would require by then. (Laptop / PSx / Xtreamer / STB) - these are as of now. We're talking 10 years!

Actually, the plan here is that I will take this LCD eventually for my room along with my computer and when we have saved loads and loads and loads of money, we will go in for a 55" LED for our living room.

That is going to take quite some time, but till that time, we can suffice with 2 HDMI ports and later we are going to get 4 anyways. When it eventually comes to my room, the LCD is only going to be connected to my comp, so I need only 1 HDMI for that.

I'm sorry, there were no old ones for display ion Vijay Sales. With the new 2010 models, I guess there are quite a few to choose from and they have got rid of the old stock it seems.

As I said, its all comparative. Compared to the Philips, the motion on the Sonys around the same price was jittery. I won't even talk about the LGs and Samsungs as they had worse motion resolution than both of these. In the end the Philips won it for me because of build quality, accurate colors and overall value. If you have a Croma in your city, you'll find Philips there.

Hmm.. strange, i was at hometown yesterday, and I got to see the new Sony series NX/BX and right next to it there was that new led series from LG (which was selling for a mere 6-8k more than the sony range).

Now i didn't have the time to actually fiddle around with any controls, but from the stock setup, the LGs did seem to look better (IPS panels anyone?). I saw once from close by, and once from about 7/8 ft away, both places the LG was looking crisper and seemed to have a better PQ. (40sony vs 42lg)

I need to find some reviews of these LEDs from LG!

^^

Actually one thing that I learned during my extensive search for a TV was: Never trust what they show you in showrooms! If you want to compare, always (bold, italics, underlined, capitals, blah blah) take your own set of videos and adjust the settings yourself!

but pupeteer is comparing led with sony's lcd's..

i think what he is saying is correct, the picture clarity would be much better ..

But we are dumbo sony lovers and stilll go for sonnnyyy

^LOL not quite. I've almost decided on one and would be picking up one of these days. Sony LCDs on the display do not have the best PQ since the factory calibration is poor. I was almost certain on a Philips model (42PFL5609) just when I found out further calibration wouldn't do anything better and the display by far has the best possible factory calibrated settings. Besides, it happened to be an IPS panel. It would lack the best blacks, needless to say.

I happened to take a couple of HD rips to Croma when I went for an audition - couple of animation movies, Home 1080p blu-ray rip, I am Legend (to have the blacks tested) and a 700MB dvd rip to have the image processing tested. The Samsung 5 series B550 had an ugly bezel which looked like some chin (looked less ugly compared to the 6 series though!). The display looked all good but since I was looking for a one time investment, I thought I'd go with something that has the 100Hz tech although I did not notice any motion blur. Maybe this would be evident in a football match or sorts.

I'm glad I came to a conclusion sooner or later.

Don't tell me you are picking up a Sony now!

^ I guess that's a no.. too tired, not being able to understand :ashamed:

I guess there'll not be Sense and Simplicity prevailing at Gannu's place now! :)

@Desecrator: So which one are you going for finally?

@coolraghav: Does that mean LED backlit ones have better clarity than CCFL ones?

^The LED backlit/edge-lit TVs definitely have an edge over the CCFL backlit ones. PQ is a lot better and the blacks stand out amongst the crowd. Besides, the LED TVs have a wider color gamut - images displayed on the TV thus looks surreal! Not to mention the lower power consumption compared to CCFL backlit ones.

But the irony is with the marketing of LED TVs in India. They are backlit/edge-lit ones and not the LED TV.

Keep an eye on the show-off thread for a few days. :P

^ Aaah building up the suspense are we now? Alright Sir, will keep an eye on the show-off thread..

led lcd when u look straight on will look better, due to higher color gamut, some sort of row wise dimming in the case of samsung led lcds and column wise dimming in the case of Sony led lcds,so more the contrast ,the depth in the picture increases.
but they have narrow viewing angle, reason being unlile the CCFL backlight unit which delivers light 360° ,the leds can only deliver upto around 120° that too only after using optical globe(which btw comes in various diffusing angles).

the local dimming LED lcds like the LG LH90 and the sony 46X450 which has a RGB dimming offer incredible contrast, the ON/OFF contrast surpassing the best of plasmas, with high ANSI contrast as well atleast for the lcd equipped with VA based panels.

So are you saying LG LH90 > Samsung LED LCDs
