Samsung Galaxy Note - Discussion Thread

So what kernel is doing best for ICS ? I miss the speedmod on GB. ICS is lousy and the battery drain is huge compared to Speedmod and official Samsung GB ROM combo.

Remember that it took Samsung at least 3 - 4 official rom releases before they came up with a stock one that was very good. Expect the same with ICS :p

Just download Odin files. Is easier to update official ROM that way. Kies can be hopeless at times.

Am having horrible battery life with the update. Its come down by almost 50% :/ Lame update. Apart from face unlock and the app switcher, theres nothing worthwhile in it. I like face unlock but not at the expense of battery life. I can live without it. I will probably go back to a stable GB ROM i guess.

Same thing happened to me. After reset it was back to GB. I ran the updater a second time and it worked.

As mentioned above, same thing had happened to me. Seems to be running alright, apart from an occasional app crash (rare..happens about once every other day). Should i stick with it or do it again through ODIN? Would appreciate your thoughts on this, Thanks

Just flashed the new ICS Speedmod kernel. File delete is defenitely faster as the default ICS delete method has been disabled (possible cause of bricks). Let's hope this fixes the bricking issues.

If you are running official build of ICS, already successfully, just do factory reset and see if your problems go away.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yep official ICS build, updated through Kies. No major problems as such..just the occasional app force closing every other day (different one every time). Otherwise, apart from the sucky battery life, it seems to be running fine.

Factory reset is worth a try i suppose, but in XDA people are saying not to do a factory reset with the ICS ROM?

Not to do factory rest from cwm. You are safe to do factory reset from the official stock recovery or from phone settings.

Guys I'm seeing some colour banding and black clipping on my videos too...
Gone through the threads in xda and any update ics in these issues...?

It's known issue. The way Samsung decodes the video using hardware acceleration creates those artifacts. Download mx player from market and select software decode option. Clipping will go away. Processor is strong enough to do software decode .

Some questions for you pertaining to ICS

1. Are you still on Stock LPF.
2. What kernel do you use.
3. Overall smoothness of ROM, memory. management and scooping, etc..
4. Battery life and a brief summary of your usage. (2G/3G, wifi, screen time).
5. Any other tips, advice or things/issues one needs to keep in mind.

I am still on imilkas CM9v1. Phone runs super, great battery life but some toggles and apps don't seem yo work properly. Also official CM seems to be plagued with SOD issues and the lack of palm rejection with the S-pen in almost all apps means that for jotting down notes it is pretty useless.

Hope you can clear up these things for the others on this fantabulous phablet.

TIA

I am still on stock LPY. Just rooted and removed some bloat I did not need. Nice and smooth here. Will be trying some custom roms later coming week.

I am left with about 30% juice at the end of the day with about 3 hours of screen time during day. Always on 3G and WiFi when home.

Just disabled weather from syncing.. I don't need my phone to tell me how is outside when I can just look out of window .
4 email accounts auto syncing. Is nice daily Rom for me.

Which 32GB Micro SD card to go for. Is class 4 sufficient or should go for class 10? Currently using 16GB sandisk class 4 with no issues.

Class 4 should be enough for the phone's max read/write usage, i.e. 1080p video recording and playback. However, higher class cards will make a difference while doing file transfers b/w your phone and PC.

Thanks so will be going for clascs4 if there is no problem with 1080p recording and playback. Getting Transcend 32 GB for 1149.

I'm also in the same dilemma. While i know that Class 4 will be enough i'm tempted to go for higher class cards since i do a lot of file transfers b/w my Phone & PC. I've been looking at this Sandisk 32 GB Class 6 card, waiting for my salary to decide :p. In the end, it boils down to how you use your phone.

Ya i was too thinking of 32GB Mobile Ultra class 6 . If u do lot of file transfers between Phone and PC then it makes sense to go for this only.
