Just came accross this awesome deal for a Seagate Freeagent Dockstar for $29.99 + Shipping

The Seagate Dockstar is a stripped down version of the Sheevaplug and will make an excellent download server. Uses less than 5-6w.

Here are the specs

One issue is that it doesn't have a Real Time Clock, but that wouldn't be a big problem.

You can get it through ICCWorld for approx 2.5k ( Maybe lesser with eBay Coupons ) I think it will make an excellent download box!

Are you running transmission of this? I was thinking of buying this but i have no idea if there any Download Managers for rapidshare that can be installed on it.
 
Excellent Varkey. i was hoping someone would start an IC for this. Hopefully, this get converted to a GO soon enough. :)

PS: I do not want one since I have a dedicated netbook for the purpose. :P

Yes I ordered one through ICC World, few days back. Will reach me in 1-2 days. But the US price was $45 and ICC Quote was Rs 3025 and with eBay Coupon got it for 2.5k.

I will probably run transmission once I get the device, even I am looking for a good http downloader for Megaupload etc. :P

^ Ya thats the same thing, you can apply a eBay coupon and get the price futher down.

But I think if you contact ICC World, with the Seagate store link you should get it for a even lesser price. :) Its better if interested people can get a quote directly as the $36 pricing may not last for long. :)

A query: Is the power adapter mentioned 120V or universal?

This is just a dock? No hdd? Can any hdd be used to dock or only freeagent go portable hdd can be used?

Can we connect it to internet and download files from ftp or torrents?

will running 24x7 damage 2.0 usb external Hard disc?

I am not sure, I will be getting it by Monday will let you know then. But mostly it will be a universal adapter.

Yes its just a dock with 1 mini USB and 3 normal USB ports. You can use any hard disk with the normal USB ports but only Freeagent ones will fit in the dock as shown in the pictures.

This can be hacked so that you can run a full linux OS, ARM version. Debian, Ubuntu etc. Yes it has a network port which can be connected to your router. You can install Transmission to download torrents and can be managed by the webui.

I don't think it will cause any extra damage to the hard disk using it 24/7

Edit : Now its there in GEB for Rs 2460, http://orders.ebay.in/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ImportHubViewItem&itemid=140435618554 Maybe due to the Free Shipping Offer.

If the 20% coupon works, it will be a really great price. :)
 
God Damn!! There are no GEB Coupons man.

VArkey did u find any RS downloaders mate? I have given up on Torrents since i am mostly downloading HD movies and Flac rite now in bulk :P ...
 
^ I think the normal eBay coupons work for GEB also.

There are many command line tools with which you can download from RS, Megaupload etc. But I haven't found one which has a good webui to manage everything.

I am not sure if all these will work on the dockstar, but I have tried aria2, rapidshare-dl on my GuruPlug which is based on the same hardware although with more memory and storage. It worked fine on my GuruPlug. Aria2 has a webui but I didnt find it very good.
 
how can ftp links can be downloaded via this dockstar. is there any software ? any one tried?

If its possible i would like to get one

I needs torrents and ftp download,

Can it be scheduled ..first post say it doesnt have real time clock?

I just used a normal ebay coupon on geb and it worked.
