Smoking Banned in India from Oct 2 !

First they should stop selling cigarattes....as many have pointed out in this thread.. Just a BAN wont do anything....
1. while asking workplaces to shut designated smoking areas, government has asked hotels, pubs and restaurants to open smoking areas.
2. No eateries are allowed to keep any candles, lighters or matchboxes in their premises. This is in a country where half of the population lives in perennial load shedding.
3. Anyone can pick you up and take you to the magistrate for a smoking violation. The onus would be upon you to prove that you are innocent. In one go the law demolishes the concept of executive authority and the concept of innocent until proven guilt.
4. You are allowed to smoke in parks and roads, preferably at the faces of the walking kids and elderly.

This is not new news for other places....
California stopped smoking in restaurants and bars and 20 feet from any public doorway quite a few years ago.
Santa Monica California stopped smoking in public a year or two ago.
England has stopped smoking in pubs and restaurants about 2 or so years ago.
Having lived through this as a smoker... everyone complains, makes a fuss.... but then it all dies down and it's business as usual and people adapt.
Here in San Francisco if you go to some really dive bars, people will still smoke even though they are not supposed to.
I stopped smoking a year ago after a 28 year, pack a day habit. I have to admit though there are 2 sides to the smoking in public issue. As a smoker I was always polite about lighting up around other people and would make a point of moving a way so that the smoke would not bother them, unfortunately, not everyone is not like this... hence the agro attitudes.
Although I understand that 2nd hand smoke is bothersome and dangerous, it is just as easy for the non-smoker to move away fro the smoke as it is for the smoker to move away to not bother them. It seems if there was a little more sensitivity from both parties, it should not really be an issue. I think it is wrong for the government to start dictating people choices in public places.
I am opposed to this more than anything... because whats next?
If someone lights up a cigarette next to you... ask them to take it somewhere else, don't moan about it.... if you light up a cigarette... be considerate of others around you that may not smoke.

i agree, moving away is easy for the non-smokers, but if the smoker is lighting up a cigarette then its his responsibility to take care that no one is getting harmed because of their cigarette.

As Keane said, this move by the govt. is hypocrisy at its best.
Banning smoking in public places is NOT the solution. Banning companies who make it is a partial solution. Increasing taxation to such a limit that it becomes inaffordable to common man is another way.
A recent statistics report claimed that there are over 3000 indegenous companies involoved in manufacturing tobacco products employing millions in the industry. Govt. cant ban it coz it want the revenues and thats it but to save itself it questions about the loss of millions of livehoods on closure of these companies. I say that is no excuse to continue killing millions of people consuming tobacco directly or indirectly.

This was in place a long time back? Huh? I still smoke in Pubs / Bars / Office / Bus Stops ...
I didnt recieve any mail informing me that i should not be smoking in public places and such...
Sure lets stop selling cigs and ban cigs completely, and lets also see a BIG decline in government funds. But hey whats money got to do, we atleast are making sure that our countrymen dont die from smoking right! Lets Ban tobacco completely, which i think no country has done before!! (Bhutan?)
And once the government realizes that OH Gosh we have a decline in rev... and increases its tax slabs, But Nvm that, we have saved people from getting cancer and what nots!

i don't understand why they are so paranoid over smoking in public places.it "pollutes the air" my ass.

Ban on Gutka and pan is not done properly. Traffic police "thuk" on the roadways and walls- let alone the aam public. People urinate on the walls on the walls which cant be stopped- those folks have become experts when it comes to giving a signature on the wall when they "do their thing" and the urines now intimidate dogs- forcing them to migrate. People (educated people as well) throw plastic bottles, papers, chewing gum, used condoms, chappal, blanket, Plastic bags, paper cups from fastfood restaurant, etc.Bans which were made need to be re-inforced then they should not of other things being banned.
