@pixelpusher

Thats very bad and flawed analogy :P Comparing cars to humans ;)

Even for cars we have pollution norms and PUC certifications now. ( And I am all up for hydrogen fuel cell cars as well. :P )

------------------------

My first and last post in this thread.

About the smoking. Yes, its the person who is causing the discomfort to others by his action should move away or discontinue smoking and not the other way around.

The real fact of this world is that people dont always do the right thing unless they are forced to.

Nothing wrong in this ban. I have said it 100 times before and I will say it again. There is no such thing as free will / absolute freedom in what we consider as good human society. Certain things have to be forced upon people.

If thats what someone wants, there are few places on the face of this planet he/she can go. No guarantees that he will stay alive for long in those places though :P

Everyone knows, its bad for them, bad for others, causes irritation and discomfort to others.

Anyone who has the problem with this ban in the name of free will / free country / personal freedom is (sorry to say this but..............) hypocrite.

good thought.i don't like your face, get out of my public place:P
i don't understand why they are so paranoid over smoking in public places.it "pollutes the air" my ass.
i don't like people with ipod in public places for thats visual and intellectual pollution to me,people with cell phones cause me EM radiation, people talking give me noise pollution, enough already.

The logic is not 'it pollutes the air' its 'its harmful to others'.

I see no point in this blanket ban. Organisations and Businesses should be free to ban or not ban smoking on their premises as they see fit.

This is not the only thing dreamed up by social engineers who claim to know what is best for us. We also now have recycled sewage water in some cities drinking water supplies for the good of the environment.

where are bikey's words and l33t's one liners at a time like this!!
Ban on Gutka and pan is not done properly. Traffic police "thuk" on the roadways and walls- let alone the aam public. People urinate on the walls on the walls which cant be stopped- those folks have become experts when it comes to giving a signature on the wall when they "do their thing" and the urines now intimidate dogs- forcing them to migrate :P. People (educated people as well) throw plastic bottles, papers, chewing gum, used condoms, chappal, blanket, Plastic bags, paper cups from fastfood restaurant, etc.Bans which were made need to be re-inforced then they should not of other things being banned.
lol  but it is true and what you are saying is correct. the problem is implementation of these bans. its kinda difficult to monitor everywhere and with the general mentality of the people, its all the more difficult.

all those who are saying government is hypocrite by not banning production of cigarettes- well the government never said not to smoke. yes it does advise you not to do so for your own good health, they are leaving that decision for you. all they are saying is if you want to smoke, just dont do it in public places where other people may get harmed. just go to a smoking area and smoke as much as you like. that way both smokers are happy and non-smokers too.
its not the question of revenues and stuff.

LOL at the people who trying to compare banning gutkha /pan to smoking.
In case of gutkha, it is only harmful to the person chewing it whereas in the case of smoking ,it is also harmful to the persons to come in contact with the smoke.

My company have sent a circular today banning smoking .Fine has been fixed at 200 Rs and all employes have been requested to refrain from smoking on campus.

I believe this is only good thing the present government has done at the center. Hope this helps in curtailing passive smoking to a large extent .

then wats the point of banning smoking in office smoking zones or in dedicated smoking areas in airports et all... no one is harming a non smoker if he/she is smoking in a smoking zone made specially for the smokers?

ok i just went through the entire thread and had to post this 1 comment more. Many people havent read the official governing rules for this new law. The smoker's zones are allowed. But they must follow the guidelines. Everything is in black and white in following PDF file.

http://mohfw.nic.in/smoke free rules.pdf

^ it isnt banned in smoking areas at airports, restaurants, etc. they have defined how smoking areas should be.

as far as companies/offices banning even smoking zones, its completely their decision.

but not allowing a restaurant having seating under 30 to not to allow ppl to smoke is plain stupid... absolute rubbish

dont take me to be a smoker. i am a non smoker and will be and so i do support the decision but am against certain clauses which IMO are plain stupid

when certain things are enforced you just have to see it from a certain pov and not self pov and btw nothing is perfect initially

yeh atleast in pubs it shud be neglected not in public places.. even the chicks smoke these days... wat abt them ...

Alright cancel out my n00bish previous post. I went to the Smokin Zone that the campus(Eco Space) has dedicated for the smokers, and the guard comes up and says something in hindi telling me that since its 12:00 am im not allowed to smoke here, i replied in english and i said im sorry i didnt know, and he said "This whole campus has no smoking zone, you gotta go outside to smoke" ....

Oh God! Hurray now ill have to walk quite a distance and have a smoke, there goes my productivity. Im trying real hard to contain myself of this fiasco, but a government that cant provide adequate food / water / infrastructure / the basic necessaties of supporting and / or developing one's life, wish's to protect the smokers and non smokers(health) in india by decreeing such a rule. HURRAY! We are so headed in the right direction.

Hmm..I wonder why the govt chose Oct 2 to bring out this new ban? Some kind of poltical mileage I guess. Or it's never too late to drive up cigarette prices in connivance with cigarette manufacturers?

Welfare of citizens is the biggest joke of an excuse that they can cite for this ban. People keep thinking that the govt has some kind of good will for them. Wake up. Nobody cares for you. This is not a welfare state. Far from it, this is a archaic hypocrisy and bureaucracy(and I mean every govt) driving an overpopulous country. Ramadoss just wants to be in the limelight or I'm guessing he has some twisted vision of his own utopia he wants played out because he has the power to do so.

If they had any kind of welfare of citizens in mind, they would understand that a smoker cannot be forced to give up with a simple ban that in all likelihood, won't be seriously enforced. While this ban may have positive effect for non smokers, it will only irritate the smokers more or send them underground. Some of them may even smoke more in defiance. Reminds me of the parking bans the govt has without going to the root of the problem i.e. sanctioning commercial establishments without adequate parking. Worthless fellows.

Like someone mentioned, if they wanted to achieve the same result with their logic of banning something, why don't they ban the manufacture of cigarettes? Nooo....that's a touchy subject with millions employed in that trade and it might become an issue of votes.

Btw, I don't smoke.

Edit: Seems I was misinformed. It's the Supreme Court that's imposed the ban. The govt is just being over zealous in following up courtesy Ramadoss.

^^ Oh Man i thought i was the only one getting irate at this, thank god there's people out there with similar view points.
Its amusing how WE(government = people = basis of democracy) prioritize on what needs to be done and when it needs to be done. We have severe food shortages, inadequate schools, heck even bus's. And here comes this hippie wanna be, banning smokin. I agree that public places and all that for the benefit of the non smokers, no argument there. I just fail to see the logic in a freakin PUB/BAR? WTH?

There are stray dogs almost every where, where the hell is the gov for matters such as that? And reports of kids/adults being attacked is on the rise, what are we doing about that? But NOOO smokers are the bad guys here! They have to be stopped! Pfft.
Lets do what China did/does, kill the dogs + eat the meat, there problem solved, two birds with one stone. (Couldnt help that stupid statement lol sorry (~.~) )

What does the goverment do for you when your not a smoker and you have lung cancer? Swear to god i cant answer this question.

Why is everyone so paranoid about the smoking ban? It's not like you are not allowed to smoke anywhere!

Besides, why is it such a bad thing? I don't think I've ever seen any ex-smoker tell anyone that smoking was so much better than not smoking. Don't think I've ever seen anyone try to explain to anyone the benefits of smoking either.

Non-smoker here. I think smoking is a filthy habit.

It's a wise decision on Ban at Public places. If some one wants to smoke go to a smoking zone and do so. It would be much better to travel in Bus now.
