Someone tried to scam me on olx.

I've been asking this continously wherever this kind of replies given...but no one respond :(

Again asking you, please explain me how its possible to do outgoing payment using QR scan without entering PIN?
I've seen UPI transactions where it did not ask for 2FA. I searched and found this.
IIRC those were merchant transactions. Not sure if a scammer could use similar procedure

Maybe that was when upi was new. But front he start of UPI i have scanned a lot of QR and everytime I have put my 2fa.

24x7 store presents a qr code that is scan and pay. No 2FA
Same goes for many payment gateways which has an option of 'generating' a QR code at checkout page.

Not sure bro. As I said not a single time i did not put the 2fa.
Will definitely try 24x7 if i can get to the shop.

Bro it is not possible. This happens because the person selling is unaware of this that you need not to scan and put OTP etc to recieve the money.
They hold you on the call, divert your mind while you do this. It is a simple miss direction.
Oh yeah, definitely no need to use any OTP to receive only to send.

Same thing happened to me day before yesterday. I had put my computer table on sale. Within an hour, I got a ping on Olx that he is interested (went by name Mayank). When I agreed to go with the sale, he sent me QR code asking me to scan and that I will receive the money. I understood that this seems to be one of those QR code scams. What I did now is that I gave him upi ID of a dormant account that I have with barely any money in it.

Scammer: Sir, I am sending 2 rupees as a test transaction. If it works, i will send the rest.
Me: Okay, send.
Scammer: Sir, please scan this QR code.

Scanned and it asked me to pay. I used a QR code scanner and it was indeed UPI Payment transaction. As it was not a malicious URL, I went ahead with transaction knowing that 2 rupees will go.
This is where it got interesting. The moment I did that, he did two 2 rupee payments to my UPI ID to make it look like I got 2 rupees. In my bank statement, I see three transactions (one from my side and two into my account from the scammer). He called immediately.

Scammer: Sir, you got 2 rupees na.
Me: Yes, but why does my bank statement show 2 rupees deducted from my account.
Scammer: Sir, when I send money to you, Paytm will cut money from your account and again add. This is how it is. This is why you saw this many transcations.
Me: Give me 5 minutes, I will call back.

I had cut the call here. In matter of 10 minutes, he pinged again and again, called a dozen times on phone and on whatsapp.

Me: I will call, why are you calling again and again.
Scammer: Sir, I have put my card in machine and it is linked to UPI. My other payments are blocked because of this. Please lets finish this.

I was laughing so hard at this. This is the usual urgency that these scammer show. They will not let you take your breath and push you to finish the transcation.

Me: Why is the QR code asking me to pay?
Scammer: Sir, that is how it is. Please scan it and finish the transcation. Money is already deducted from my account. I will lose money if you do not finish this.
Me: I just scanned your new QR code and my Paytm shows that I do not have enough balance. Why is this?
Scammer: Sir, For me to send you 3000, you need to have minimum 3000 in your account.

When I cut the call again, he kept on calling with extreme urgency.

Scammer: Sir, please, my money is deducted already. DO not delay.
Me: Okay, let me reach out to Paytm support and ask them why I need to have money to get money.
Scammer: Okay, please go ahead adn reach them.
Me: Thank you. I will give you a call after I speak with them.

After I cut the call, he stopped calling.

This is what actually happens. Kudos now we have all the steps.

So i put up my case and cooler on olx.
Suddenly this guy Deepak Sharma messaged me that he wants to buy.
Once the contact was shared he started chatting in whatsapp and tried to do the QR code scam where ultimately I'll pay him the amount. Lol
Here is his number.
And lastly he says "bangalore bahut bda hai tu nahi to koi aur sahi "
Meaning Bangalore is quite big. If not you then some one else.

Usually, I leave the OLX chats unattended for few hours. OLX themselves will block suspicious numbers/contacts. This will save the hassle to some extent. And, whichever contact remains still unblocked, I'll try to reply.

Welcome to the club! I played this "game" with scammers on Olx recently while trying to sell my household stuff before moving to Bengaluru from Delhi NCR.
At least 3 scammers, contacted me in a day.
Anyway, the point to remember is this is like a full-time job for them. They start from morning to evening. Discovery channel has even done a episode on them. Not Olx specific but their modus operandi.

A lady in my building too got conned in this scam. Just one day before, she asked my wife (both are kind of friends, same age) if we have used olx to sell stuff and she was not much aware. My wife told her that I have dealt on olx and have experience so I can definitely help. But she did not seek that and went themselves and lost money and did not sell their furniture.
Felt very bad for her.

I was about to make a purchase via olx, better cancel now.
Guy located near me.

Of course, it is your decision to buy or not buy but it is not like everyone on OLX will be a scammer. It is an imperfect platform that requires a lot of patience, luck, and also a cautionary mindset to buy or sell. Ideally, it is good to insist to meet at the seller's house or if you're a seller insist that the buyer meets you at your place.

I have bought and sold on olx in past.
Mostly personally, all buyers / sellers were near my location.

Says it all doesn't it :(

This is truly concerning.
I have bought many items via olx and not a single one from my own city let alone location.(new Delhi)

Dealt with people from as far as kochi, Patna, bangalore, Jammu, Mumbai ( never sold anything ever though)
Always paid full amount in advance and booked pickup, by God's grace never had any issues whatsoever.

People have been supportive and totally honest, otherwise who ll pack stuff as per your directions and then share with you dimensions and all and then print label and keep track.

But this issue the op mentioned, I should keep in mind.

This article is about cards, it clearly says it multiple times.

There is no option in UPI to pay without PIN. UPI by design requires 2FA, one is your phone itself and the other is your PIN. which is why if you change your SIM or phone, your apps will need to reactivate your account.

Anyone here claiming to have made UPI payment without PIN, I'd love a video evidence or the name of a merchant where I can try this. I don't think it's possible.

The reason people fall for this scam is because people are not tech savvy and they don't think things through. Most people never read what's there on the screen right on front of them. Every UPI app tells you that you don't need to enter PIN to receive money. But people still believe the scammers when they make random statements as given in above posts.
