So much, in fact, that dev kits will soon be free

Sources tell us that Sony is in desperate need of developers for the PlayStation Portable, as many developers have abandoned the platform due to poor sales; on top of this the fact that after Sony gets their cut there is just very little money in developing for the platform.

Sony might have an answer for this problem and they are hoping to attract new developers to the platform. According to our sources, Sony is exploring an option to give qualified developers free PSP development kits to help stimulate development on the platform.

The move by Sony to begin giving away PSP development kits to qualified developers for free could really help stimulate the amount of available titles for the PSP. In addition, it could really help get the PSP development kits into the hands of qualified small development studios or teams that could not otherwise afford the costs associated in buying a development kit and developing for the platform.

Some see this as a possible first strike at attempting to head off a possible attack by Microsoft, who is said to also be working on the development of a portable gaming platform. In addition, Microsoft is already said to be seeking developers for the Zune HD, as well as for applications expected to be sold in the Zune download store. Of course, many developers have also been attracted to the iPhone/iPod Touch and have been starting to develop for that platform, which has caused resources to be stretched for development for additional platforms.

While according to the whispers that we hear nothing is set in stone yet, Sony does seem to be starting to head in this direction as they do believe that it could be the key to turning the tide and gaining more title support for the PSP. In fact, several developers have already announced additional titles for the PSP in a trend that Sony would like to see continue. Sony does believe that the stimulation of the growth of titles for the PSP is necessary for the survival for the platform. While we don’t know which developers might qualify for a free kit, it does seem that this move would really be well received by the development community, according to some that we spoke to about the possibility.
Fudzilla - Sony needs PSP developers badly

One option is staring them straight in the face and they r hell bent on ignoring it.

The Homebrews.

There are good developers who want to explore psp's abilities and not exploit it.

Get some of them on board and try to segregate the ISO playing capabilities..

you ll have developers of the mini games, enthusiasts, and who knows what magic they can wield once they get some Sony backing.

Not to mention the boost in psp sales, i bet there are loads of ppl ready to try out homebrew stuffs

If only this Sony will stop being so stubborn.

I agree with you Spacey.

Sony needs to cut down on that High-handedness.

But with the launch of PSP Go, and subsequent increase in PSN activity, online games, mini games etc Sony will be looking to cash in on the DLC scenario.

Die hard fans will in any case pay and download the latest games. So that sector, even though very limited, is secure.

Coming to homebrew. Tell me man, how many good homebrew games have ever been released? There are some great applications no doubt.

^^ On the contrary, there are some very good games on the homebrew out there.

Just need to search thats all.

I am not too much into homebrew cuz i havent finished off the regular stuff.

been more of casual gamer, but there are seriously good games from HB developers.

I am not too sure abt the DLC's popularity,

1) Sony hasnt decreased the cost of DLC games.

They save on packaging.

Save on Manufacturing Costs.

Dont give spl freebies/collectibles to buyers.

Yet Sony is so smart that they priced their UMD and DLC same.

Weed has been cheap in their backyard sale i guess.

2) Say if they decide to remove a game from their server,

the DLC is gone, and even if single enthusiast wants to have it after he lost his PSP Go , he ll have to purchase a UMD maybe for something he actually had paid the price.

Another issue with the PSP Go is that you cannot change your battery on your own [sony did their homework alright], but that really is not too bright.

Sony should stop trying to control the product after it's sold.

rather they should realize homebrew's potential.

-They get developers.

-They boost PSP sales.

-They allow competition on this overlooked platform.

Whenever ll Sony learn.. :sigh:
