Star Citizen - Discussion Thread

I know very few are interested in this game here but for those that are, here's yet another jaw dropping moment.

Yesterday, CIG announced that they were offering 150 Limited Edition "Idris Corvette's" (capital ship) for a very short while.

9 MINUTES later, they were ALL SOLD OUT!!

Whats so amazing about that?

Well, each ship costs a whopping $1,250 of REAL world money!!

The response was so good, that CIG added another 50 ships - and 6 minutes later they were SOLD OUT as well.

So in 15 minutes, CIG sold 200 Idris Corvettes for $250,000. Keep in mind that the game is still 1.5 YEARS from launch.

Total sales over the past 24 hours alone - US$ 800,000!

Total crowd funding for the game so far - $11,785,582.00.

New stretch goals added as well -

More details -

Also, a new Directors Cut video for the 300i. Remember, everything you see in the video is "in game" - no CGI is involved.

Another "making of" video -

Yup been following this whole livestream event and I was watching when they announced the first round of Corvettes. I saw them sell out in 10 minutes. It was crazy.

I'm up to $100 pledged now. $65 for the 300i + $10 for the 315p upgrade + $25 for an Aurora LX (backup ship... limited edition which they're selling again for this week).

I was actually planning to reclaim my pledges and go in for a $110 Drake Cutlass pirate ship or a Freelancer package but I realized that I really, really want to have a 300i variant in my hangar for this game. So if I got a Freelancer, I'd still end up spending another 55$ for a 300i at some point and that would put my pledge at $165 which is 10,000 bucks. That's when I realized I can't afford that much on a single game :p

I agree with you Spin - the ship buying fanaticism for this game is simply staggering. :greedy:

People have spent $100's (sometimes $1000's) buying digital ships. I really wish I had that sort of money lying around but I honestly don't. The fact that the Rupee is reeling vis-a-vis the $ certainly doesn't help.

I don't plan on buying anything more with real cash and instead plan on buying/capturing/earning things I need/want in game instead.

My plan is simple - I intend to hide behind your ship, let you do the hard work of attacking/fighting/destroying other craft, then pick up the salvage and run away before you can fire up your own tractor beam to pick it up yourself! :p

Regarding your spending plans - see THATS what happens when you don't take my advice. :depressed:

I told you ages ago to opt for "The Completionist" tier. If you had taken my advice then, you wouldn't be bothering about all these piddly little sales today as you would have an awesome fleet by default.

Its still not too late. Get a "Completionist" slot. Go on, you know you want one. Heck, at the end of the day, its only a weeks salary for you... ;)

The ship buying thing is just so tempting. I spent all weekend talking with my friend about the various ships and options as they had revealed in the livestream. Before this event started, he had a 300i package. Now he has a Stella ($225), a Cutlass ($100) and an Aurora LX ($25) :p

I personally am $15 away from a Freelancer so let's see how long I can hold out before that happens. The rupee really is killing us though and it seems the RBI has given up on trying to support it anymore. In any case, it's all for the good of the game. Having a couple of ships to start off with is nice but having the game realized as I imagine and hope it will be is priceless.

edit - I have no self control

Really nice to see SC hit $12 Million!!!

New stretch goals announced as well.

$13 million
-Additional flyable ship class: frigate
-Command and Control Center – Supervise the battle from the deck of your Constellation, Idris or destroyer (class TBA) with advanced C&C packages that allow you to tie all of your ships together and assume central command from the 3rd seat.

$14 million
-Hibernation Mode: for the explorers out there, we will add the ability to save and resume while you are out in space. When not in combat, power your ship down, hit the bunk, and exit the game safely until you can resume your journey.
-Professional-quality feature-length “Behind the Scenes of Star Citizen” documentary film.
-A fourth land out option on Earth! Where will it be? London? Berlin?

Spin, SC will -NOT- let you down when it comes to game play, immersion and a humongous persistent universe where you can play for 100's of hours. Personally, I see myself playing SC for 1000's of hours, not just 100's.

Plus there's Squadron 42 and the private servers option as well. And dont forgot, proper mod tools will be released at some point. This will extend the game will past its "usual" shelf life for sure. I foresee a reasonably healthy population of players playing SC even 5 years after initial release, purely based on community developed mods and expansions even if they are only playable on private servers and not the PU (which would be impractical for obvious reasons).

You will get your moneys worth Spin - at least 5 times over. Thats my personal guarantee to you.

Just trust me & BUY BUY BUY more shipsssssss! Lots of shippppsss.

I assume from your last post that you caved and bought a shiny new FREELANCER?! If so, that's really great! Its a really nice ship. My fav so far is the Connie though.

Next, I suggest you buy an "Idris" (preferably TWO) and at least one Connie that you should then "gift" me. That way you can buy the C&C package as well and command your "fleet" from your Idris - and life will be great! :p

Personally, I'm saving money to buy an Oculus Rift for when SC is finally released...

Not sure what you mean by "free to play basis"?

This is not an MMO (if thats what you mean) though SC has several features found in traditional MMO's.

To clarify, if you buy the game once, the game is free to play forever. There is no monthly charge or anything of the sort.

For example, I have bought the game with the simplest, most basic ship. It cost me $35 dollars and I don't have to pay even one $ more and will access to the full game just like the guy who paid $15,000.

The only difference is that when the game starts, he gets LOTS of ships (and money) whereas I get only one.

Remember, you can only fly ONE ship at a time. Also, there's no "best ship". Ships are of varying types and designs, each having its strengths and weaknesses.

Plus, there's nothing stopping me from earning (or capturing) as many ships as I want provided I'm willing to spend some time in the game. It won't cost me any real world money to do so.

So if you meant is this game "Pay2Win" then no it isn't.

As for your other point, no one can eat you alive if you stay in safe areas as doing so would put a huge bounty on their heads and make their lives quite miserable. If however, you venture out into the unknown, then you should be prepared for the consequences of doing so as there would be in real life.

Hope that helps... :)

Yea got the Freelancer. My friend is an original backer so he was able to get me the package for $110 instead of me having to pay $125. The gifting and reclaiming system meant I needed to gift $110 worth of items to him so he could melt them all and buy a Freelancer pack for me.

I'm not particularly amused by the idea that hibernation is a stretch goal. Does it mean that before this, the game was designed to necessarily require people to travel back to their hangars before they could log out? I can appreciate the realism that this would bring but honestly in today's world you don't always have time to do this. Sometimes you have to stop playing instantly to take a call or if some work related thing comes up (or in the case of India, god damn power failures). Saving state out of combat should have been a part of the game from the get go.

Yea got the Freelancer.

Awesome. Next up - an Idris!!! :)

No no, it wasn't anything like that. Saving the game state in non-instanced situations was always available but with a "drawback". Here's how it works -

-----------------------------------
Q. What happens on a disconnect or rage quit? Do I lose a life?
A. When you disconnect (or otherwise quit in flight) the server attempts to take you to “auto pilot”. If you’re in a space instance (i.e. not already in warp/ auto pilot) and close enough to a hostile the server will attempt to gain enough separation to enter auto pilot. If it’s successful the server will then place your ship back on the planet you last landed on. If not, and you haven’t managed to reconnect to your AI controlled ship before the hostile destroys your ship it is assumed you ejected successfully and will be returned to the last planet you landed on.
-----------------------------------

What the "Hibernation" stretch goal allows is for you to enter stasis in mid space and resume from there itself.

The only condition being that you are not in a combat instance prior to Hibernation, for obvious reasons.

With the currently available option, a non-instanced disconnect would have placed you on the last planet you landed on. So the difference is, you can potentially save a lot of time (if you're exploring far out) and want to hibernate rather than face a "position reset" so to speak.

At least thats my interpretation of the new "hibernation" stretch goal.

As someone who is going to do a significant amount of exploring, the hibernation stretch goal is very important to me.

BTW, you're worried about power failures? Hell Spin, my ISP is so pathetic that its "normal" for me to have disconnect/reconnect problems at least 4-5 times EVERY DAY. Now just imagine my situation. Suppose I am in a combat instance and winning a battle (by fluke) and my idiotic ISP disconnects - I am pretty much TOAST as the enemy ship will have a sitting duck to aim at with no danger of getting killed.

Will definitely be changing my ISP when SC is finally released.

For full details on the death/exit/quit mechanic, have a look here -

Well the default solution sounds better than having to fly manually every time to a docking station but I still think saving state mid space should be part of the core design. A lot of us are going to be exploring the universe so this being a stretch goal that's 2 million dollars away is a bit odd.

Compare it to these guys who were asking for so little but still failed to hit their goal earlier today.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ninedots/god-factory-wingmen?ref=search

I feel kind of bad for them considering they went to the extent of offering an immediately downloadable Alpha for user testing before backing.

And I'm really mad that I somehow missed this other KS because it looks really cool -

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1718477862/void-destroyer

Its a "hybrid" Homeworld + Combat Space Sim.

They were offering the full game at $10 & then $12- peanuts.

The upside is that it was was funded successfully so hopefully I'll be able to buy it on release...

I actually knew about Void Destroyer but I chose to skip it because I was still reeling from overspending on Star Citizen :p

The next Kickstarter I have my eye on is this one - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/5livesstudios/satellite-reign
Open world cyberpunk themed strategy game in the vein of Syndicate. Sounds very cool to me.[DOUBLEPOST=1373172864][/DOUBLEPOST]We're hours away from crossing 14 million. One million dollars added in one day. This is beyond incredible.

Re: Satellite Reign, nice to see someone bought the 5,000 Pound Tier! They are past the halfway mark with 21 days still to go. I think they should make it.

Re: SC - I'm fairly certain there will be a blitzkrieg of offers from CIG post Alpha/Beta that will push the funding past the $20 Mil mark.

Now that would be a nice benchmark to set for the future eh? :)

Spin, I don't go to KS at all. So if you happen to see a decent space/flight sim game, please let me know. Not interested in any other genres. Saw one yesterday called "Eterium" but it didn't impress me enough to pledge...

$14 Million hit - "Hibernation" unlocked Spin!! :)

"With the $14 million unlock you’ve added Hibernation Mode to the game, allowing explorers to shut down their spacecraft in deep space and resume the game safely later. We will also be putting together a professional-quality “Behind the Scenes of Star Citizen” documentary and adding the much-discussed fourth land out option on Earth (city TBA.)"

New stretch goals revealed -
$15 million
  • Additional flyable ship class: escort carrier
  • The Upgrade Handbook: an extra 42-page manual that walks players through the process of customizing and overclocking their ship systems! (PDF free to all backers before $15 million)
$16 million
  • Arena mode: The next generation of Wing Commander’s TrainSim allows pilots to test out their combat skills against friends or strangers in a simulation. Gain valuable combat experience without the downside of losing your ship in the game universe! Place bets on competitions across the galaxy.
  • A laser pistol for every pledger before this point. Keep your ship safe from boarders with a pistol by your side.

Don't know about the new stretch goals though. Seems like they are getting weaker the higher we go. Somewhat disappointed. Maybe its just me...

Yea the stretch goals don't seem that significant anymore. On the other hand, maybe they've decided on the features of the game and don't want to keep adding major new things just for the sake of having attractive stretch goals.
