Thats good then...

Also... ATM my surround sound is routed through the dvd player (for both dvd's, tv's and laptops)... Will I have to change anything to make it work with the computer? To make it work simultaneously with the dvd and PC?

For approximate prices, you can look at www.deltapage.com
Everthying suggested by other members is available in India.

HTPC is not power hungry as you think, just use the minimum required components so as to keep the heat and noise at low levels. Its not about what you can afford. Its about what you need. :ohyeah:

buy amd 4400+ CPU

Ati HD3650 + 780g chipset mobo combination will give u enhanced performance

4Gb is frankly quite overkill for a HTPC. 2Gb is more than enough.

as some guys mentioned, a X2 4000+ cpu is fast enough for smooth 1080p without any hardware-based decoding.

unless you want hardware decoding, i don't think a graphics card is necessary. onboard video is sufficient. better to invest that money into a dedicated soundcard, unless you already have a home theatre setup with an AV receiver for digital sound decoding.

for hdd, it's always good to have more storage. so i'd recommend minimum 500Gb, especially if you intend to keep 1080p videos which easily take up at least 10Gb per movie.

Windows Vista Home Premium is a good media centre OS, i'm personally using Vista Ultimate on my HTPC and very happy with it.

I find the most critical part of a HTPC to be the controls i.e. keyboard/mouse. something that you can sit back on the couch and effortlessly control what you need to play. a keyboard/mouse is still a little cumbersome to me personally. so i chose to go with a gyroscopic RF/IR remote:

Newegg.com - Gyration GYR3101US Universal Infrared / RF Remote Control

+1 to that .

I use a IR receiver to use my Marantz Universal remote with my HTPC (In addition to the other devices it controls)

Burnz, that gyration remote seems neat...

Did you get it frm the US or somehwere else?

Also, can it learn IR codes from other remotes?

got it from newegg via KMD ;)
yes, it can also learn IR codes to work with other devices like LCD TV, dvd player etc :hap2:

Are you sure? Cause I heard that the 780g is good enough and there is no need for the Ati HD 3650?

The thing is... I already own 4GB of RAM...
So 780g on its own won't be enough for hardware-decoding?
So... instead of mouse/keyboard... I should get only a remote?

[quote name='Crazysah']Are you sure? Cause I heard that the 780g is good enough and there is no need for the Ati HD 3650?

ur rig is HTPC so there no need for gfx card...tht was just suggestion.

780G:::Dubbed the Radeon HD 3200, the integrated graphics core is ripped directly from the RV610 graphics processor that powers the Radeon HD 2400 series

crazysah, for the last time , HTPC's are lean and mean machines. they're silent, they're minimalist , and their job is to store, playback, and organize media. You've been cooking up rigs which are way beyond what HTPC rigs are all about. You're like a person who wants a mountain bike , but ends up putting so many acessories on it , it can hardly move on level ground , let alone climb mountains.

If you want a monster rig, by all means get one, but lets call it a monster rig . A quad core , 4GB ram and an 8800GT do not an HTPC make. all though this thread people have been advicing you what not to buy, and you still keep adding to it. An HTPC is about finding the minimum required components for the job. Finding a mobo which has the right connections (DVI/HDMI), fanless as far a possible , onboard/ the least power hungry VGA card which can decode HD, an underclocked ,and if possible ,a a passively cooled low end CPU, silent fans, an elegant cabinet and good sound.

If these are not what you're looking for , what you're looking for is a monster rig which can also play movies :P

I already have 4GB of RAM! Why should I waste money on buying 2GB when I can just put in the 4GB of RAM?

Final List;

1. Monitor: 46 inch 1080p Full HD
2. 2GB of RAM
3. OS: Windows Vista Home Premium
4. CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Ediiton
5. Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H
6. Internal Hard Drive: 720 GB WD
7. Wireless Mouse/Keyboard Combo: ??
8. Remote; ??
9. Anything else I need; ??

I think this is almost the final list...
If I go for an Intel chip instead of AMD then which one would be the best for an HTPC?

Crazy, since you have 4GB add them to the HTPC. Nothing wrong with that. The above configuration is good. May I suggest adding a bluray drive for HD movies as well.

Use Vista Ultimate/Home Premium 64bit as the OS.

E4500 would be a suitable Intel Chip comparable to amd 5000+ in terms of price. You will need to pair this processor with a G31/33 based mAtx motherboard. Regarding the remote you get the MCE compatible remotes from the market.
I would suggest sticking with the amd config as it seems to be a better htpc platform.

Finally, you have not decided on the cabinet. Shortlist a few, and we shall help you choose the right one. The antec fusion 430 is what I would recommend.
