@red-devil - will take time, but will try by this weekend. Btw I have read your PM, but I thought I would give you a detailed reply, give me a day or two, will also go through the thread you pointed.

Also do tell me what all you want me to test with iPad so that I can post all that in review. What are your expectations from review

@avi:
I'm a complete noob in the ios world (not to imply that I'm awesome with Android/WP) and I wanted to know how worthy the OS itself is.. Like someone says it's a walled garden - even if I'm ok with it being a walled garden, how beautiful is the garden itself?

I used a friend's ipad 3 (I think) running ios 7 and it somehow felt a bit laggy .. I'm guessing that its not the case with Air and then I noticed there are somethings I cannot do - such as play a video in a background tab and read up something on a different tab ..like when you're playing a TV show or something and you don't want to pay 100% attention to the show but you'd like to listen in while you browse something else...
Now I don't know how common/sensible such a use case is, but that's something I'm trying to find out before I pull the trigger on one of those doorbuster deals this black friday :D

If you don't mind, can you write up briefly about your first impressions with the tablet and ios - I'm not looking for a great detail (yet) but I need some basic pointers..

@red-devil - I cannot say how beautiful is the garden, but for me the experience has been awesome so far. To be honest, it actually depends on what you expecting from the device (or eco system). I had android mobile and also android tablet before I switched to iOS. Back in that, Android mobiles were crappy, sluggish and ugly looking with poor battery back up. I immediately made a switch to iOS, well that was almost 3 years back. Today I think Android mobiles are certainly good.

Coming to tablets, I have Nook Color. I rooted it and it runs on some version of CM10. But after I switched to iOS, I felt Android experience very bad. And also 7' screen made me re-think about it. I mainly used it for reading Graphic Novels and Programming books/Papers. For me, reading graphic novels on 7' was really bad and programming books was even worse. Problem is, for the kind of books I read, only PDF is the option and 7" is really small for it. So I decided to go with any 9-10" tablet. However my experience on Nook Color wasn't that good. Or may be I was expecting something else, I don't know. I had made up my mind that not to invest on Android tablet. I may buy an Android phone, but never a tablet. That's how worse my experience was. I was really bored of changing ROMs every weekend. Things would be never stable. Crashes, lagginess were irritating. On the other hand, my new iPhone 4 was amazingly well. So I inclined more towards iOS. On top of it, I use hackintosh. With all devices coupled together, the experience is much more better. iTunes on Mac is really good. In fact I have no complaints with iTunes at all.

Do mind that this was all 1 year before. I stopped using my tablet entirely. Now, before buying iPad Air [I had almost made up my mind for iPad], I tried Nexus 7. Performance was wise it was really better and a lot improved. However, with respect to UX/UI, it still sucks, IMO. Lack of many good games, apps optimized for tablets were another issues.

But honestly speaking, I am biased towards iOS. And I absolutely don't like Android tablets. With tablets or devices with higher screen sizes, user experience matters a lot, I highly doubt if Android will ever figure it out.

That said, what do you expect from your tablet? What are your usages? If you are a kind of person who likes to have funky app launcher or invisible keylock pattern, then iPad is definitely NOT for you. Please do not buy. iOS comes with lots of restrictions and shit, so unless you are completely okay with them, do NOT consider buying it. For me, iOS suits well. Been 8 months since I changed my iPhone's wallpaper. Or its lock screen. IMO, iOS devices are highly optimized, gives you great performance [or it may be because, Apple locks down most of the stuff, but who gives a fcuk.] and very good battery life. I get around 9-10 hours of continuous usage battery back up on my iPad Air. Apple devices will last longer, they have the great built and they just look beautiful. Again, its all perspective and depends on person. And don't forget to keep in mind that you are hearing this from a 3- years+ Apple user [who made switch from Android]

So, think again. Read up reviews. Go to Chroma, check out the devices, be it Droid or iPad. See it for yourself. Look up online about things you can do with iPad and all the restrictions and shit that comes with it. Ask your friends, who have Android tablets and how they are using them etc.

Regarding my initial impressions with iPad Air, I would just say AWESOME.

Hope this helps.

haha yeah very fair and a totally random judgement...for N7 13 I can blindly say it can run each and everything that Apple can with same smoothness or more...if you want a bigger screen size then wait for N10 or go for Sony tab...it is possible to lock down android too to a sub par level and gain battery life/ minimal app usage etc...so as far as I can tell if you are one of those users who wants to have no options and think that whatever you have is the best ....then by all means go for it...its your money after all

^^

It is fair, It is not random, since in the end he tells others to see for yourself rather than be paranoid like you. I am 110% sure that N7 does not run smooth as ipad 4 running ios 7. Coz I have N7 and my sis in law has ipad 4. :). Android as a tablet still got far more to go before being said its as good or anywhere near ios tablet apps. But in the end if you find it awesome, then thats all there is to it. I never understood abt ios being close or no options etc. I am a windows user for god sake. I am ok with options that ios gives me. If it didnt, I would have stayed in android. After all I spend too much of my money on android tablets there were truly disastrous experience.

But what you said is true. The OP and me do think what we have truly is the best. no arguments there.

I think I'm gonna jump into the iOS world with iPad Air... let's see how it goes (provided I get one with some discounts on BF - I don't have it in me to stand outside Bestbuy/Target/Walmart etc for hours on end..)

Besides, I think holiday purchases have 15days return so I will return it if I don't like it.

Thanks @avi, @m-jeri :)

@msankadi I see where you're coming from but I think I'll take the plunge and if I don't like it, then I can bash it based on my own experience :D

I do suggest you check out the device thoroughly rather than buying it coz forum ninjas suggested it. Its sad that you cant compare this with any of the previous iPad. And also, once you put in a case, the light weight goes out the window. But i guess, thats what you pay for the extra security. I have full body cover and then put inside a folio case, which logitech is calling thinnest. Not so thin in my opinion.

Shit... You in US... go ahead and buy it man.... if you dont like...return the item. :D :D :D.

@m-jeri: I was thinking of buying the case that you get from the apple folks (the one or $39 or something) - do you think its good? And which is the logitech case you're using/which other case would you suggest? A friend of mine has this case .. no .. box for ipad and it looks pretty $hit to me!

The cheap one is not a case r8?..its that front cover only.. even that is like 50 usd... or did i read wrong?

and the full cover is 79USD. which i wanted. I got the Logitech waterproof folio case. 40 or 50 dollars.

I have used my ipad mini naked (No pun intended), but thats because i exclusively use it at home. For one who travels frequently with his device, its a huge risk not to have a case

Not interested in fanboi wars, but Nexus 7 or 10, no match for iPad 4 or iPad Air. Period.

You can check reviews online if you want to.

First you say that you are not interested in fanboi wars and then you post such an absurd comment that totally dismisses the competition.

Firstly, these days you can't compare tablets or phones like these as most of the experience depends on the OS and what works for you may or may not work for someone else. I just loved the look of my iPad 4 and the accessories options. However it was iOS and it's improper weight distribution that led me to dumping it after a week of use. I just hated the fact that despite having a Gmail app it took me to the native email app whenever I clicked on an email address (on a webpage or in a message anywhere), among other things all related to iOs including the lack of real multitasking.
I am a very heavy user so much so that my tablets replace my laptop so iOs just didn't work for me with it's limitations.

The N10 was the perfect tablet for me because it just worked for my kinda usage. Despite being just 58g lighter than the iPad 4, it's weight distribution was so much better. I could use it with just one hand whereas the iPad 4 felt heavy even for 2 hand use. I even got better battery life with N10 because on the iPad I needed to keep the brightness cranked to full whereas even 50% was more than enough on the N10.
Now on to the question of apps. iOs has more tablet specific apps but have you seen what the normal apps look like on an iPad. They look pixelated when enlarged to 2x whereas the scaling on Android is such that even normal apps look the same as a tablet app even when occupying the whole screen.
