The Darkness II - Discussion Thread

WOW! This must be a season for sequel announcement, first Ubisoft and now 2k.

For the PC folks who are clueless about the game, the first title was a console exclusive and was an awesome game with kick-ass voice acting (read: Mike Patton as Darkness). Bad news, it was never developed for the PC. Good news (well almost), the sequel will come out for the PC as well.

For now, we'll just make do with the info and a not-so informative screenshot:

2K has put an end to years of rumours by officially confirming the development of The Darkness II, and has also announced that Digital Extremes will be managing the project.

Few details of the FPS have been revealed, other than that players will be reprising the role of long-haired Mafioso Jackie Estacado and controlling his supernatural darkness powers.

2K say the game also features a "hand-painted graphic noir technique" which enables it to stay true to its comic book origins.

British comic book author Paul Jenkins is returning to pen the script. Jenkins has written for the comic series itself, as well as contributing to the God of War series.

"Sometimes that whooshing sound you hear is that of comic fans holding their collective breath," said co-creator of The Darkness comics Marc Silvestri in a press release. Or it might just be the wind.

Digital Extremes is most famous for its work in co-developing the Unreal series alongside Epic. The studio also chipped in with Bioshock 2's development, and created 2008's Dark Sector, which was praised in its 8/10 review for having "thrilling combat and sensational visuals".

Rumours of Darkness II have been slipping out since 2008, where a speaker at Top Cow's New York Comic Con panel said "we can’t say Darkness and video game sequel in the same sentence. So, Darkness. Wink. Sequel."

The original game in the series was made by Starbreeze Studios, who have recently been rumoured to be heading up a new Syndicate game for EA.

The Darkness II is due for release Autumn 2011 for 360, PS3 and PC.

Re: The Darkness 2 annnounced!

Wonder which movies are they going to premier in this game. The previous title had a couple of full-length movies to be watched.

It was a good game though.

Anybody who has played The Darkness please give a mini-review. Was thinking for getting it. :)
Primarily an FPS game with bits of survival horror. The protagonist is seeking revenge against the murder of his girlfriend in the other world. He possesses supernatural powers (some of them are unlocked as the game progresses) and he is able to wield them in darker areas within the game which will turn out to be more powerful and effective compared to using them in a well-lit area. Side missions can be undertaken which unlocks some in-game content. Few full-length movies can be watched within the game (which might explain the game's size!). All-in-all a decent game worth a playthrough.

The Darkness 2 release date announced.

2K Games has announced today that The Darkness II, the sequel to the 2007 title The Darkness, will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC on October 4, 2011 in North America and October 7, 2011 internationally.

Inspired by the supernatural horror comic book series created by Top Cow Productions, and developed by Digital Extremes, The Darkness II takes players down a brutal and personal path as Jackie Estacado, wielder of Darkness - an ancient and ruthless force of chaos and destruction.

The Quad-Wielding gameplay empowers players to slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies using Demon Arms, while simultaneously firing two weapons. Combined with a twisted storyline, and stylistic violence that is visualized through a hand-painted graphic noir technique, The Darkness II harkens back to its roots of the comic book origins.

Christian Police Associations call for Darkness II ban -

At the opening of The Darkness II, protagonist Jackie Estacado has risen through the ranks of organized crime to become the don of the Franchetti clan. And while it might go without saying that the police in the game's world will be set against him, it turns out some authorities in this world have an issue with him as well.

The Darkness II is being targeted by the boys in blue.

The heads of the International Christian Police Fellowship, the Christian Police Association, the Swiss Christian Police Association, and the Germany Christian Police Association last month drafted a letter to politicians and game producers explaining their objection to the violent content in many games. Specifically, the organizations called out The Darkness II, saying it and games like it create a distorted perspective of police officers for young players.

The groups are appealing to lawmakers and publishers to immediately stop the sale of such games, referencing the Biblical verse, "[F]or whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

2K Games has provided a comment on the police associations' objections, saying, "Reported stories regarding police officers in The Darkness II were erroneous. To be clear, there are no police officers in the game."
