Nice perspective.

Zhops the third one is nice, so whats your take on the 50mm prime lens, I wanna buy one of those... Do post some low light pics too, do you get any bokeh in low light?
I was able to get a bokeh on the kit lenses too.

Bokeh has nothing to do with light - except if you mean that we use lower f-numbers in low light resulting in shallower depth of field.

I got decent bokeh with the kit lens too - I've posted those pics earlier.
Bokeh, depends on the comparative size of the subject wrt the total frame too.

Don't know what you mean by that :ashamed: From what I've understood, depth of field depends on f-number, focal length and distance to the focus plane. Check here - Depth of Field Table
P.S. - My main issue is camera shake :( Anything slower than 1/40 is a hit or miss. Enabling flash solves this problem but usually ruins the pic. I'm trying out diffusing it with a paper cap. Seems to work ok.

With steady hands, a sharp picture is expected at a shutter speed of 1/focal length. So, with a 50 mm lens you should be alright with shutter speed of 1/50 (or 1/80 with Canon APS C) even without IS. With IS it is expected to be 3-4 times slower. Being conservative and considering a difference of only 2 stops with IS, speed of 1/12.5 or 1/20 (APS C) should be easy.

Try increasing the ISO...or practice various techniques which steady your cam holding :p

yes yes, practice with kit lens, or larger f-number on the prime :p

u just wanna be lazy and use the f1.8, but please dont take the easy way out :bleh:

^^ if 1/40 is hit or miss, bokeh is not your biggest trouble my friend :)

Hmm, Zhops you mean to say that pics get blurry beyond that shutter speed? I guess on the kit lens the IS maybe helping me as I get decent snaps till 1/8 shutter speed.

And I was just giving a practical perspective of bokeh from a few snaps I had taken, the smaller the focus area, the higher chance of getting the effect. Maybe wrong out there :p

Better option... Use tripod...
Tripod is the necessary evil....
Most of us think it is impractical to shoot candid photos at home with tripod.. but it is not.. specially once you get habitual and addictive to tripod...

^^ I dont think for his purpose a tripod is a solution, with a better technique of holding camera, camera shakes can be avoided easily at stutter speeds upto 1/25.... Object photography I guess even at 1/8 shutter speeds, a steady hand will do a job, anything less then that and you require a tripod..

just taking a sample, that's at 1/13 sec, while standing and bending down from the hip to get to the table level.

why need a tripod :bleh:

My 1st contribution to the thread, so critique/suggestions welcome.

I've also similar problem like zhopudey, anything lower than 1/30 pictures are hit or miss.

Also I'm struggling to get good sharpness, any tips on this.

^^ Are you talking about the prime lens or the kit IS lenses, as I feel the IS on the kit lenses would reduce camera shake by a good margin.. Need to try the 50mm prime myslef...

I second Aces... Able to take decent shots at Shutter 1/6 sec at 50mm in kit lens with IS... [keeping in mind that subject is not moving to lot.. small portrait movements are ok..]

:)

1/4, non IS 18-55 kit lens at f 5.6, ISO 400.
