So how many have your nice black gaming console converted to play any formats you throw at it? ;)

Wipes the floor with all those standalone media players. :P

The PS3 can be directly connected to a laptop or a PC eliminating the need of a router AND a crossover ethernet cable! It appears that the PS3 is capable of Auto-MDIX thus eliminating the need to use a crossover ethernet cable. Thus a normal ethernet cable can thus be used.

Set the following parameters for the network adapter for the PC -

IP: 10.1.1.1

Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: BLANK

DNS: 10.1.1.1

And these for the PS3 -

IP: 10.1.1.2

Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 10.1.1.1

DNS: 10.1.1.1

Now open PMS and go to General Configuration Tab, look for the [Force] area and select the network adapter. Force the IP to 10.1.1.1 and restart PMS. And you are SET! :)

Be prepared to do a lot of tinkering with the settings to get everything right.

Many thanks to zomgheals at the PS3 Media Server Forum for this input.

Cheers!

I guess the console section needs more PS3 threads and stickys.

We have many for PSP though.

Makes the WDTV Live, xStreamer, <Enter any standalone media player here> laugh at itself!

This thing has been there since long but I did not see a thread dedicated for this in the forum. So better late than never!

PS: Many thanks to stormblast who had me introduced to this during August 2009!

Hah! Guess who introduced it to him :P

Anyway, works just fine over wired networks. Issues with wireless for HD streaming, but good for DivX and MP3s.

I have been using Tversity for a while with my PS3, it works pretty good. Like techhead said wired connection is the best way to use it.

Just had to pipe up and play the devils advocate here.... I am not trying to rain on anyone's parade but...........

I have an Xtreamer and a PS3 and they both have their strong points... but no matter how good you dlna server is, it will never be able to play some of the files you can throw at the Xtreamer. For example a blue ray iso rip... Even on a wired connection the ps3 will have a hard time playing back a larger mkv file via a media server using codec containers.

I won't even get into the mods that they are starting to add to the underlying Linux OS. ;)

Don't get me wrong I love my PS3 and I use it all the time, but I just think you are a little inaccurate in saying that it has as good a playback and can play as many formats via a DLNA server as the Xtreamer.

I tried this. It kinda lags on higher bitrate stuff so I normally prefer to move my movies to the PS3 HDD first. After watching, I delete them.

I am using KAWA File server to transfer data to the PS3.

Errrm I did not know that but WTH! Danke Zen Masthah! :D

PS3 Media Server will run thru wifi n/w without internet like LAN setup..... but u might encounter many connection or buffer issues....... best is wired connection..

Havnt tried it without router.......

Kestrel,

The PS3 media server will run without internet as long as all the devices are within the wireless n/w.

This is my setup:

1. I have a wireless router, with SSID : XYZ.

2. My PS3 as well as my computer are a part of that wireless network.

3. My PC runs the media server, which in most cases hosts all the data, I need to play on my PS3.

4. Since, both the PC as well as PS3 are in the same wireless network, there is no need of a additional router. The wireless router will take care of the routing between the PC & PS3.

5. However, I would recommend using a wired network since wireless is irritating at times and buffers a lot.

Hope it helps,

This is what I wrote about using PS3MediaServer in another forum, hope this will help in setting up the media server.

For those who are noobs like me, how this thing works..

First, you need to download a media server software( I'm using PS3 MediaServer) from the net to your PC/laptop. You can either connect wired or wirelessly. I'm using wireless connection with a Linksys router. So basically my Laptop/Ext HDD's and the PS3 are connected through the WLAN.

To configure PS3 for wireless you need to go to the Network Settings.

Enable Internet Connection.

Go to Internet Connection Settings and then select your preferred mode of connection(wired/Wireless). For wireless you'll have to select the network first.

Once selected you have to key in the password if you've set one for your network (WPA authentication).

Once you are successfully in the network you can go back and check Network Status by using Settings and Connection Status List on your network settings menu on PS3.

There is a Internet Connection Test option available but that's not working for me and always returning an error. So I don't care about it as the network is still working. You may need to restart the PS3 after the first time setup.

Also don't forget to enable the Media Server connection in Network Settings menu.

Now in your PC run your PS3 MediaServer. It'll try to find your PS3 automatically. Once you see the PS3 is detected you can go to your Transcoding settings and change your settings for your network and CPU capability.

[ IMP: for wireless network and a reasonably fast CPU following seems to work best, or basically that's what I'm using now after some trial and error..

Max. Bandwidth : 18 (you may try different values)

Mpeg2 video quality settings : keyint=25:vqscale=1:vqmin=2

Other things I left as default.

Before this setup my video was stuttering after sometime but now it's smooth as if being played directly from the hard drive]

Also enable multicore support if your PC has mulitcore.

Next step is to share the folders that you want PS3 to see. For this, go to Navigation/Share settings in your PS3MediaServerand add your folders.

After this you should be able to see your MediaServer from PS3 menu on your TV and you can start browsing and playing your media using the PS3.

I really like the photo slide show options and now I can show my photographs on the big screens to my friends. Even the mp3 playback sounds really good. Only issue I felt was that I was unable to find upscalling option for the streamed video but anyway my AVR is taking care of that now. I'm playing files of size 8GB's (720p res) without any trouble, also playing my DVD rips in the same way. But for DVD rips sometimes I can see some loss of quality.

Hope this helps..

Regards,

I'm using a Linksys WRT54G as of now, but I'm not very happy with this router. It disconnects the connection when a new node is added to the network. e.g. if I've my laptop connected and then I connect my PS3 then for a moment my PC will loose connection as it has to again get the dynamic IP address from the router and vice versa. May be a firmware or settings problem but it's irritating.

Another friend of mine is using a Belkin and think he is not facing any issues like me.

What I read is that it's better to get a 802.11n (draft) supported router (most of the wireless routers now available are 802.11g) as it'll give more bandwidth and much smoother playback.

Also keep in mind that PC/Laptop need to be powerful enough (atleast dual core) or you'll see drop in quality and stuttering.

With this media server I am even able to play 10-12GB mkv's....... I dont think this has any limitations.......

Plus after the stable release i.e. 1.10.51...... there hav been many more beta releases till 1.20.400....... all adding & also fixing many things......

I tried to use Tversity before PMS....... but found it very difficult to setup.... actually wasnt able to play any video files thru it......

Was almost going to giv up when I found PS3 MS in some forum......

Installed it..... and immediately it found my PS3....... after tht everything I thru at it just kept working.......

The New stable release is going to come in a few weeks......

Hey that's great. Can you please tell us your setup? I mean, is it Wi-Fi or wired? If wi-fi then which router are you using? If wired then which cables are you using(I'm so much thinking about adding cables so that I'll be able to play the bigger files easily).

This is some awesome piece of software. Just set it up on my PC. *goes to watch Terminator Salvation in 720p on 42"* :D

Thanks to the OP.

Tversity plays Mkv :S

have only tried Divx & mp4's :P

any other media server recommended ;)

I haven't tried though...as i connect my laptop to my LCD screen directly for viewing HD movies :P

^The PMS is by far the best utility to play the media off a mac/linux/windows based PC. Try connecting your laptop and configuring the utility through it and post back! :)
