Shogun 2: Total War Releases to Incredible Reviews

For all RTS fans out there, Shogun 2 has released to some epic reviews.

I've never played the total war series myself, but with this one, I'm thinking of dipping my toes in and seeing what the fuss is all about.

Has anyone played the earlier games in this series? Are you looking to play this game?

I'd like to hear your feedback.

Looks GOOD. very happy to be a PC gamer as its an Exclusive!!

Re: Shogun 2: Total War Releases to Incredible Reviews

Definitely looking forward to play this. Have played 2 of their previous releases - Empire: Total War and Napoleon: Total war. The campaigns were pretty good.

The gameplay is pretty much similar to the AOE series & LOTR:BFME/BFME 2 except that in addition, they have turn-based gameplay. So unlike AOE, wherein everything happens simultaneously (prepare your faction for combat, while your villagers gather the resources and build the city researching technologies), here both the factions will have to take turns during combat. And the view switches alternately from the aerial view to the first-person view when the gameplay shifts from RTS to TBS. The rest is essentially the same.

If you loved playing the AOE series, AOM, LOTR: BFME series, I'd say grab this. :)

The game seems to have been received quite well. Looking forward to it once I am done with the other pending PC titles.

Jojo, how long did you take to complete the Starcraft 2 campaign?

^Awesome! I think I'll give it a try sometime later. I love the RTS genre. :D

Re: Shogun 2: Total War Releases to Incredible Reviews

Played Empire Total War, man it has incredible depth. If this is any better(cant think how much more better they can make this already awesome game), then I'm in!

Re: Shogun 2: Total War Releases to Incredible Reviews

why isnt there any discussions in TE about this game...
@gannu
i think u left the game midway?
im planning to play this game
btw i loved aoe but hated civilization(turn based)
so is this worth trying out?

Re: Shogun 2: Total War Releases to Incredible Reviews

I did play Total War (before Shogun 2, and Napoleon, 2009's title)

It has depth, but the rts game type I love is AOE II and Rise Of Nations(RON), Total war appeals to many, but it's simply not my style.

Same goes for Civilization V, it's just not my style, turn-based and all. Plus, Total War went for great realism and created epicly huge and insanely-mindblowing detail for a game, a strategy one. But I simply am not patient enough to watch my soldiers footmarch all the way.

Re: Shogun 2: Total War Releases to Incredible Reviews

To all those who are put off by the Turn based factor of this game, just try out the custom games/historical battles to get your RTS fix. Custom games allow you to setup your and opponents' army/navy composition, map styles, weather conditions etc.
Witcher 2 is on hold for me ATM due to this game :)

Re: Shogun 2: Total War Releases to Incredible Reviews

It's been a really long time since I've played something from the RTS genre. Turn based gameplay might just make me play this one. :D
Long back when I was a kid I used to play Heroes of Might and Magic II. It was really addictive and great fun.

Unfortunately yes. Couldn't cross the first campaign. The game crashed after the 100th turn. :(

The game will keep you engrossed for hours, rest assured. Although I am not sure if classic RTS genre fans (those who loved the AOE/AOM/RON/LOTR:BFME/BFME2 etc) would like this one since the turn based approach might not appeal to most of them. A vast majority of the battles need not be fought depending on the army you possess since they can be auto-resolved which saves a lot of time.

Surprised that there are no Total War fans here, but even if a rare few are there please share your STEAM ID here and we can see about weekend matches, now to the meat of the matter --

Dude i wrote an entire 7 page review on shogun 2.. but honestly multiplayer is full of glitches
<
campaign is awesome though.. but i think the music needs to be revamped and in my honest opinion the original shogun was awesome and much more fun to play.. this thing does not seem to end literally.. especially if you choose nations on a different island.. on the mainland it is much easier..

I have spent hundreds of hours playing shogun 2.Played using almost all the clans and its one of the most addictive games i have ever played. Its sad that only few people enjoy this great series. Its too complicated for some people.

STEAM IDs please.

#Gannu and mrcool63 thanks for redirecting me to appropriate page, can you merge them please Gannu.

I will read your review on ERODOV and get back to you, Sire. Cheers!!

Its too complicated for some people.

I would say most people do not have the time and interest demanded by this game, it requires significant investment and time to let this great series grow onto you.

Actually its the turn based gameplay that is kinda pushing people away. There is a "feeling" of lack of action in turn based games. There is no sense of urgency or fast micromanagement required. You have time to plan. This "feeling" has been developed by older turn based game and people like me shy away from these game because of it.

Hey Sire, the article was well put although, you could have elaborated a little more on specific eccentricities of this series. I was glad you used a mid-range set up to gauge its performance.

I think it was open ended due to the plans to create something like this, standalone expansion where your multiplayer AVATAR can be imported from the original Shogun II. I plan to purchase the GOTY edition of the same as it will include all the DLC's and will carry a slightly reduced price tag.

I have not played Shogun II, Fall of the Samurai will the first game I will play after Empire: Total War [I rampaged as the Maratha Confederacy in that, conquered all the way upto Istanbul]. Lets hope it is a good expansion.

I do not get what kind of urgency you require. I find that these games were much better than Age of Empires and associated real time strategy.

Micromanagement is much deeper, your taxes govern how effective / large your ARMY was, your ARMY determined how much land you can effectively hold, the land you hold gave you the most taxes and trade revenue. A lack of cohesion and equilibrium between any of these meant that you were liable to loose territory OR your kingdom would implode due to internal issues [revolts, riots et al]

This makes sure that whatever decisions were undertaken by the player at any time in the game, would affect his gameplay later down the line.
