Some of the most spectacular splashes for 9.10 ;)

yup, seen all those posted on ubuntuforums :) most are good but unrealistic maybe... but lets see what surprises the ubuntu "desktop experience" (DX) team has for us.

the "artwork first drop" deadline is near end august... then there are more drops and final artwork deadline mentioned in the karmic release schedule: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KarmicReleaseSchedule

edit:

netbook edition is still good for nothing...

check out installer bling for regular desktop edition:

yep i'd already submitted the data (didnt work for me) into the bug report when the blog came out almost 2 weeks ago... i thought i had posted it here also - but must have forgotten :) posted on the ubuntuforums tho...

Canonical is working hard these days to redesign the Ubuntu installer (also known as Ubiquity) into something a little more in tune with our times. We've already told you in our latest report on Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) Alpha 4 that Ubiquity has now a "Quit" button during all the installation steps, so you can quit the installer at any time. Moreover, the time zone selection items have been changed a little to reflect the region/zone only, and not the city.
Today we will present, exclusively for our readers here at Softpedia, what the Ubuntu developers intend to add next in the Ubiquity installer. The package is called "ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu" and it is designed to offer an Ubuntu-flavored slideshow for the Ubiquity installer. What this means? Those of you who installed Microsoft Windows XP or Mandriva Linux, or openSUSE already know what this slideshow is supposed to do. Long story short, it will display some content, every 20 seconds or so, especially created to introduce new users to the Ubuntu operating system, while installing it. Please take a look at the video clips below to see a mockup content for the Ubiquity slideshow. The second video was provided to us by MadsRH.
The content that will be featured in the Ubiquity slideshow is still to be determined. For now, they divided it into two main categories:

1. Some simple text about various applications and what you can do with them;
2. Original content, with normal paragraphs, about the Ubuntu operating system and some included applications.

Both categories will include the following slides:
  • · Welcome message
  • · Browse the web with Firefox
  • · Relive Memories with F-Spot Photo Manager
  • · Accessibility in Ubuntu
  • · Ubuntu speaks fluently
  • · Control your digital life with Evolution
  • · Keep in contact with Pidgin IM
  • · OpenOffice - Office tools at your fingertips
  • · Watch and listen on Ubuntu
  • · Installing additional software
  • · Getting Help with Ubuntu

Is this the Loopy Llama thread? Sorry couldn't resist :P whats the expected release date for Koala, I have been finding Ubuntu a little heavy lately, I hope they speed and spruce it up a bit :)

Expected end-October :)

Note the boot improvements are under development, they have started making the changes but no actual speed improvements yet (in fact it might be slower)... the plan is to have the "fast and beautiful boot" more stable by the time Beta is out...

(of course I will download this alpha and install it anyway).

I also read some post somewhere that the (k)ubuntu logo fades out just before powering off when you shutdown the machine! Nice touch...

Cool!! Thanks for the info, sounds good. I have enough on my plate to keep me busy until then, don't have the time to be alpha testing atm :P Will check it out in Oct then and hope for some improvement from the current sluggishness ;)

to clarify, its the bootup speed that is still being worked on, forum users are already reporting that the alpha6 koala already runs fast even on old P4s. if you're using a current stable release and its sluggish then there may be something else going on - you might try investigating if you want (like running one of those tools - xrestop or something).

Wow, installation of Karmic alpha 6 (and Fedora 12 alpha) from USB stick takes just 5 minutes each on a desktop PC!

How much did Jaunty took?

Takes like 15 mins from booting to final restart for me on a quad core machine. Tried on a computer in college lab, took around 20 minutes in it. P4, 512MB RAM.

Jaunty took 10 - 15 min or so IIRC but that was with an older/slower pen drive. This 5 min time was on my Q6600 desktop using Corsair GT pen drives.

Note that I don't count bootup/reboot times... I only count from the time installer itself starts (like the first screen) and the "installation completed - 100%" screen shows up :)

Some of the new artwork in Ubuntu 9.10 ;)

It seems I might try this as my new desktop. If the crappy sify guys fix their client on it.

the Human theme looks a little more polished, nice and clean
