so i installed kubuntu now. very stable. me like better than GNOME of course. got firefox installed. printer detected automatically again. VPN/PPTP wasnt working - got to figure it out. audio/networking working fine. VLC media player works great. KDE desktop rocks

btw, kubuntu installer, when i clicked the skip button it crashed haha. so i needed to unplug ethernet cable during install so it didnt take too long downloading stuff in the middle...

is the 64bit version a desktop version or server version?

ubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent from here non server edition?

yup its the normal gnome desktop version meant for most users....

edit: wanted to mention ubuntu shuts down in a flash (under 5 seconds!) and kubuntu takes another 8-10 seconds extra but that is mostly waiting for KDE shutdown/logout sound to complete heh. after adding the "ubuntu-boot" ppa which installs modified kernel and some ureadahead package my boot time actually went up by 2-3 seconds to about 21-22 seconds :) still about the same as jaunty, and hoping for more goodies to come in the repos...

shut down yes its lightning fast , but somehow i felt the jaunty booted way faster than karmic !!
quad booting !! mate i am seriously jealous of you :P

Just installed Karmic 2 days ago ...its a fresh install after removing my 9.04 installation.

Now things are working fine.
But i got this problem... whenever i play songs on Exaile/Rythmbox/Banshee the sound stops after the first song. The scrollbar keeps on moving but no sound.

I have got a Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1 and its identified as CA0106.

Any pointers ??

ubuntu quality seems to be going down :/

btw better to use ext3 for time being as there is a nasty bug in ext4 :P

9.10 Release Notes | Ubuntu

looks like i have to go the corp way of installing new release, wait for few months before installing the new ver...lol

I was about to install ubuntu 9.10 when I read this.

Possible corruption of large files with ext4 filesystem

There have been some reports of data corruption with fresh (not upgraded) ext4 file systems using the Ubuntu 9.10 kernel when writing to large files (over 512MB). The issue is under investigation, and if confirmed will be resolved in a post-release update. Users who routinely manipulate large files may want to consider using ext3 file systems until this issue is resolved. (453579)

Thanks for pointing this out. I'll stick to ext3 or maybe I'll wait for the bug to be fixed.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I won't be transferring huge files to the ext4 partition anyways, so I'm installing it right now. :P

Were you able to resolve this problem. I might get the same problem with my Creative audigy value card. It is recognised as CA0106 too. Am going to install Karmic tomo.

^^I don't think creative Xfi and Audigy will work. Ubuntu unlike Mandriva/SUSE and Fedora comes with older Alsa which doesn't have special support for Creative cards. So I would say try the above stated and live happily :D

Yes partially...
I asked in Exaile IRC and they said to change the sound output to ALSA which did the trick.
Havent been able to change that in either Banshee or Rythmbox.
So am tugging along with Exaile with ALSA.

See if its any better for you and let us know.

Will it resolve my problem if I directly download from ALSA site and install the sound driver from there?

Well i installed the 64bit Karmic Koala yesterday from a pendrive using Unetbootin. The installation went smoothly but now I am getting a GRUB error 17. I can neither boot into Linux nor into windows. I have already reinstalled once. Any suggestions? BTW, anywhere I can get the Mandriva 2010 DVD (preferably 64 bit) in Chandigarh? I don't think it has come with any Magazine this month.
