Delta debs and using zsync for package updates

Recently saw a thread on ubuntu-devel about zsync benchmarks and plans for Karmic for "delta debs". I hope they can pull it off in time for feature-freeze so that it is included in Karmic. Even though my broadband connection is costly and slow, it's a fixed-monthly-price deal so I am willing to help test this when the devs ask us.

Some interesting links from the thread:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt-setup/+bug/74747

They're also looking at: Software Updates: Courgette ?(Chromium Developer Documentation)?

From reading these links, my understanding is the planned "delta deb" feature could turn out superior to Fedora's "delta rpm" (Presto) stuff in the following ways:

1. Deltas are computed on the client thus relieving server load thanks to zsync's use of http range request feature.

2. You can update from version N to any nearby future versions like N+1 or N+2 or N+3 etc but Presto can only do N+1.

Can anyone comment on whats right/wrong here? Any other points to add?

Cheers!

edit:

Some choice snippets from the above spec link:

The rsync program of the rsync algorithm is unsuitable for this, primarily because it requires a lot of server-side resources. However, the zsync implementation works around this: the server is a standard HTTP server, and a new data file is added (containing the rsync "signature" data). All the rest of the computation will then happen on the client, which uses HTTP Range requests to fetch parts of the file from the server.

The RPM world has presto, which relies on the package archive generating delta-RPM packages. These are then downloaded normally, and applied by the client differently from normal RPMs. This requires upgrades to happen from a specific version, which the rsync/zsync/apt-sync approach avoids.

Courgette I think needs server resources again to disassemble and calculate diffs (reassembled on the client) binaries so it might not be nice for volunteer mirrors.

Just tried Ubuntu 9.10 alpha 3 on VirtualBox and also on my tablet PC.

Nothing much to see here, some small improvements, still not stable, prolly not until alpha 4 or 5. Unable to enable desktop effects in the VM but works on my tablet nvidia hardware. Note that grub2 won't initially detect other OS for dual/multiboot.

Installer is improved:

1. The timezone selection world map works much better - at least for India/Kolkata timezone selection.

2. The partitioner now says "Erase and use entire disk" instead of misleading "Guided" along with second option of manual partitioning. If there are other partiotions/OS then a new first option "install side by side" shows up!

3. The "install gets stuck at 82%" issue is still there where it takes a long time checking the internet at 82%.

Post install the standard - applications are there with latest updates, ubuntu one app is there by default although I dont have account to test it.

Some improvements to the notification popups look and feel.

Still downloading Kubuntu version but I don't think anything of interest will be there either.

No point trying this release. Wait for Alpha 5 when they hopefully will have new artwork and start testing the delta package feature for fast updates... my 2 most awaited features...

are you using version 9.10 latest? if not please post in your other "linux for office work" thread :D also mention which version you are using. if its that old ubuntu studio throw it away and download ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron LTS desktop release then come back with questions... (again, in that other thread of yours)

if you are using 9.10 alpha version then post the output of "dmesg" command...

Some mockup from Canonical :)
