So just an update that I've been enjoying elementary OS very much. There were some minor glitches and annoyances and because it is open source I submitted some code changes which got accepted and fixed some of the issues.

Now I've again recently started poking around the OS and submitting some patches so the core developers were kind enough to invite me to their private Slack channel and also made me a member of their organisation on GitHub! :D See https://github.com/orgs/elementary/teams/desktop-developers/members

^ congrats. Didn't understand anything in the git hub. Was too high level for me.
I did understand that you did some changes to the wallpaper and time settings though. :D
 
Does anyone have a solution for HEVC playback on elementaryOS? It's choppy and laggy on a g4400 with onboard graphics. On windows, it barely touches 10% usage on POT player.
 
Have you tried various different media players and proper config options to see if anything picks up the hardware acceleration for HEVC?

I tried VLC and MPV. VLC doesn't seem to have HEVC hardware acceleration support, and I couldn't find settings option in MPV. I even tried using an old GTX 280 instead of onboard GPU and even that didn't make a difference.
 
I guess if we can't figure it out now, gotta wait for the 17.10 release or other distros based on 18.04 LTS next year :(

Also, here's a screenshot of their experimental installer which I submitted a few minor fixes for, and as you can see, I don't dual boot. Not even triple or quad boot. But "quint" boot, if that is a thing! Yes, TWO installs of elementary OS :D One is stable and the other is a "daily" updated test/development version.

@vishalrao Is Elementary OS stable enough to be used in place of Mint/Ubuntu?
The latest release of Ubuntu does not detect my internal laptop wi fi card. So need to install something else.
 
@hotshot05 Yes it is stable for me :) But that does not mean it will be the same for you. Different hardware not to mention different usage (I dont do gaming for example and I dont run too many variety of software or customisations either). You can give it a try by booting off the Live ISO usb image to see if it works with your wifi card. Note that elementary OS (current "loki" 0.4.1 version) is based on the older ubuntu 16.04 LTS stable edition but IINM they also include some broadcom wireless which normal ubuntu does not have by default.

BTW have you tried searching for the issue with your wifi card model number, for example here: https://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=336 ? IIRC there was a recent update that changed some default setting causing wifi issue and just changing that setting resolved it for some users but I cant remember exactly.

I forgot my wi fi card manufacturer name and mofel number. As far as I remember, it is made by Broadcom.

Currently my router does not have an ethernet port and so I am unable to hook my laptop up. Need to bring out my old router for this or try USB tethering.
 
Cool, if it's Broadcom you can try booting elementary OS off USB drive and see if it detects your card by default, because like I said it has it added by default where as stock ubuntu does not IINM. But if you need your existing distros, there are steps to re-enable in those too, since everything is ubuntu based :)

My wi-fi worked fine when I booted off USB drive.
But since it is still a work in progress, most likely will go for Mint. Elementary is a bit too minimalist for my taste.
 
Don't be fooled by the version number being "0.4.1" - this is a stable official public release. Well, pretty stable for most people I guess :D But yeah if the features/UI are minimalist I guess I can't try and convince you to use it.

For me personally, there are only two options that I like. First is KDE for it's "sophistication" and next comes elementary (with its "Pantheon" desktop environment) for it's "clean" approach. I've tried other desktop environments (including Cinnamon/MATE/GNOME3/Unity7) and don't really like them. If I have to do a lot of work to configure/customise then it's not for me.

Of course, I use both KDE (neon) and Pantheon (elementary) on top of the Ubuntu base.

Fedora is another sophisticated OS with choice of some desktops but isn't intersting. I really only like the "delta RPM" software download feature where it downloads only the part that has changed and not the full packages again and again like with ubuntu/debian based DEB system.

Mint/ubuntu has a bigger app library interface compared to elementary which shows only those apps which have been made for elementary. Is there a way that I can get the one click install just like Ubuntu/Mint in Elementary for all applications?

EDIT - I had shutdown Windows 10 properly rather than doing hibernate before I booted off USB Drive.
But I could not mount NTFS partitions as it continued giving error related to windows hibernation. Is this normal? Or is it because I have hibernation enabled?
In Win 10 if hibernation is enable then a separate MBR is created (or something like this).

In Win10 disable "Fast Startup" option in Control Panel power settings... you have to go to advanced section and click "Choose what the power buttons do" then click "unlock or enable administrator options" there IIRC... that should fix the NTFS mounting issue.

Have you tried Fedora with MATE or Cinnamon? Just a suggestion in case the wifi works well with it and you still get your desktop of choice.

elementary's "App Center" does allow installing all packages that are available in ubuntu, not just their first-party ones - I guess you have to browse the categories or perform a search... BTW check out a pretty cool looking simple torrent app called "Torrential" there :) Anyways I dont use the app center, always via command line "sudo apt install XYZ" :)

I need to keep fast startup enabled. I love the press Power button to hibernate in 3 sec feature.

Is there some other way to mount NTFS partitions with fast startup enabled.
