A American crime story without Mafia cannot be called a American crime story. Mafia is a intergral part of American criminal society . GTA IV was about Niko Bellic, a non-Sicilian. The involvment of Mafia was but necessary.Ethan_Hunt said:I'm not a "more experienced" gamer, just a casual gamer like most of us out here. That said, I myself have considered GTA IV to be one of the greatest sandbox action games. I haven't played the first Mafia game, nor have I seen any of the movies. I don't even know if it's (Mafia II) linked with the movie in anyway, is connected to the first game or a fresh new game altogether; none of us know that. Hence how can we even predict of it not surpassing GTA IV? We haven't even been introduced to it's complete gameplay mechanics, the characters, the weapons, side missions etc. There are so many things which are not revealed.
Moreover, when you say "We have hell lot of Mafia stories in books, movies and games what different perspective could Mafia 2 (3,4,5...etc) could offer?", I don't think every gamer out there may have read all those books, watched all those movies or played all the Mafia games. Do you remember GTA IV's storyline also included Mafia bosses? That's how Roman gets involved in those difficult circumstances in the first place. Jon Gravelli? Jimmy Pegorino? Vladimir Glebov? Who are those people? Nothing but Mafias or mobsters. GTA IV had a great deal of sub-plot linked around it.
Many games have had their fair share of Mafia linkages in them. So why do you doubt Mafia II's storyline won't offer something different on the table?
Also it's not necessary that if there are films, books and games already made, that a new game won't be able to offer something creative. The best example of this would be Chronicles of Riddick. It already had the movie franchise established, so why were both it's games such a hit? They offered a brand new storyline as opposed to the movies and a good one at that. I hope you understand what I mean to say.
If you have read or watched any Mafia books or movies you get a fair idea what a mafia story would be like. It is the same rehashed shit. Some Sicilian family in America, a old mob boss betrayed by some another mob boss, his son -nephew etc becomes part of the business, lots of killing, killing people in the Family, shitty Sicilian values, stupid Sicilian accent. It has
now become boring, nothing new. There are lot of movies in Hollywood made on mafia today, but nobody gives a shit.
Similarly when Mafia 2 comes out, ppl would know what story to expect. The same rehased shit mentioned above. Nothing different. Hence my point.
Regarding gameplay mechanics what different gameplay mechanics can it offer. All games have same basic gameplay : shoot anything that is pointing gun at you . Its the story and way it is presented that matters.
