Urgent: 550D+extra lens vs 60D

No, didnt make my decision yet. Went around the shops here to ask about the 60D and the least I could go is 54K but all of them almost convinced me that ebay has only gray goods which wont have warranty. Was thoroughly exhausted so couldnt reply. Im going to buy tomorrow.

I like to shoot macro shots of bugs etc, bokeh, landscapes, sunsets, sunrises, shots of the moon, nature in general and want to try light painting. (My P&S has a super macro mode too)

The ratio would be 50% video and 50% photography. And I'll not be upgrading the body for about 4 years or so. And the 550D kind of feels small in my hands. So I was thinking 60D+kit lens(18-55)+50mm prime at 56.5K for the time being. But that leaves really less for memory, tripod and bag. Could some one tell me how much would a decent budget tripod would cost. And a 16 or 32GB card suitable for video. Maybe these extra expenses might push some sense into me and make me buy the 550D.

I aware of the advantages canon dslrs offer for video. These crops modes and importantly manual exposure control during video make them the best dslrs for video.

BTW does anyone have experience dealing with this dealer

#[member='max']_demon Oh sh*t! Just now realised what you were saying. 600D has a 10x crop mode at 1080p without loss of quality, while 60D can only do it in SD resolution. 10x zoom is a great asset but 600D is at 46K or so while the 60D at 50K is a clearly better camera. In a great fix
<

Can this crop mode be added to 60D through magic lantern?

#[member='artikle'] I am not sure, as i can't find any references on the internet and never used magic lantern or 60D..

regarding memory card, get at least a 15 MBps one for recording HD videos. buy 8-8 or 16-16 GB's instead of bigger card, for movies too i'm sure you wont go more than 5 mins for one take.

there are hell lots of expenses in this hobby than any other.. but, Tripod, Extra Memory card, (Extra Battery too if you make movies), camera bag, and filters like uv are must have... (btw get pan head tripod than ball type )

And relatives coming from US in May. Anything of the above that is considerably cheaper that I can ask them to get from there?

I already went through that comparision but still...

LOL , the whole world wants me to get the 550D. I think I should convince myself that it is the best option. The thing is I am dead sure I will not be upgrading the body for the next 4 years, even if as they say I "outgrow" the body. Doesnt the IQ on the 550D change in any way compared to 60D? Say I have 60K, will the tripod, memory and bag not fit in 4-6K? But if I buy the 550D the budget would be capped at 55K. So what can I get for 55K if I choose the 550D. Will I not regret buying the 550D instead of 60D even after 3-4 years?

#[member='touzeen'] I cant say anything about your suggestion as my knowledge is next to none regarding it. But actually I was talking about lens, tripods, memory, bags etc not the body as I guess it wouldnt have warranty here. Also as I read, this camera has only 26 lenses. But Im not stating that as a negative. Maybe others can say what they feel about this vs my present options.

UPDATE: If a kind soul gives me a 10% coupon(working on it) then Ill get the

60D for 47700/- | 600D for 40500/-

And 550D is available for 33K from deals the the week.

At 46k it wasnt appealing but what you guys say about the 600D at 40500? I get my articulating screen and 10x zoom crop mode, plus save around 10K but of course with the 550D I'll be saving 17K

#[member='Fenix'] #[member='FaH33m'] #[member='Konquerror'] Update!

But I would need to make the purchase from his account for the 60D and 600D

#[member='artikle'] If you want to use the body for 4 years, get 60D. Start with kit lens now. Get familiar with camera controls. Improve your composition. After a month or two, add lenses to you collections like 50mm f/1.8, 55-250mm IS etc depending upon what you like to shoot.

#[member='Konquerror'] LOL was almost tuning myself for the 550D or the 600D. Ok then, how much will the other must haves cost:

Tripod: should have fluid pan head.

Memory: 30MB/S Sandisk 8GB at 760/- from Flipkart

Bag??

#[member='artikle']

if you want to be future-proof,mirrorless is the FUTURE and m4/3 is in the lead

sorry if 26 lenses are too few for you.

i recommended that because it has much better IQ compared to 60d and 60fps video + image stabilization for video

also,i said the same thing which #[member='Konquerror'] has said but in post #16

#[member='touzeen'] You sure did! Actually you were the first one to suggest the 60D. I was happy atleast one said 60D
happy19.gif
. But I was in a completely confused state back then as everyone else were saying 550D. The 550D suggestion was the majority though I wanted the 60D. So couldnt decide back then. They all have a very good valid point too though...but still...

EDIT: #[member='touzeen'] I never said 26 lenses were less. I said I didnt know if they were less or not or anything else about that product. Still Im open for others opinion about that camera, but the no warranty part is a bit worrying.

Hahaha,i know the dilemma ur in.Ur pocket says 550D but your heart and mind says 60D.If u have decided go for it dude.I know that how it feels later.

" Kaash 60D le liya hota us waqt".If u can compromise on Lens +Tripod till u can save for more .Go for the kill, close all the windows;open the door and grab a 60D ASAP . I wish if i could help you with the coupon thing .

I am using Sony VCT R640 tripod with my camera and I'm pretty satisfied with it. It costed me around Rs 1600/-. It comes with spirit level for alignment.

Well I'm not kinda guy carrying tripod with me every time. I would rather prefer handheld shots at f/1.4 and high ISO
<

If you are very keen on carrying tripod with you everywhere you go, then buy a good tripod.

Camera bag you will get with camera itself. Canon provides a good bag with it's camera. As your collection of lenses becomes bigger, buy a backpack.

Edit: Here is the URL of tripod I'm using

#[member='Konquerror'] Seems to be good. Can the head be removed? I guess this should be sufficient for me.

And no bag with 60D
<

Well there is a piece, which is screwed to camera, that can be removed. There is nothing like head in this tripod. It's very basic and light weight.

Also u should know that cameras are just tools.. don't go much by technical aspacts. all cameras take pictures the way you want to take.

while doing photography just take the camera out of the equation and focus more on composition and the subject itself.. even whatever camera u use today. it will still be able to work at its functionality for many decades.

What type of camera bag do you want?

If you need small bag that will enable you to carry your camera along with no extra stuff, then you can get a decent one in 1k. If you are considering a backpack you will have to shell out at least 2.5k for that.

Yes, Sony VCT-R640 does comes with quick-release.
