Citi has been by far my best banking experience. Touchwood.

Yes. All salary accounts usually are. Call up CC and confirm in any case.

No extra charges. Again, refer to (1) above.

No.

Not sure about this. I only deposited cash in the ATMs. Trust me, finding a Citibank branch is not an easy task. If you happen to stay near one, you have to be super lucky. That said, I visited my bank only ONCE in the 7 years I have had the account.

thanks buddy :)

Opening an account coming monday.

Although i ampretty happy with AXIS, but no offers :(

Offers with CC are good but Im primarily looking at best & quick service. Banks fiscal standing has to be top-notch.

Went to HDFC Yesterday, they say it would take atleast 3 months after opening a savings account to get a CC.

Then tried ICICI, again they ask you to open an account or get an FD but promise card in less than a weeks time.

What's the real process, does one need a savings account or FD or something else?

Also how about Stan Chartered & American express?

Kotak Mahindra have been cold calling me for sometime now, don't know their status either!

^^ If you walk-in to the branch for a CC, they act pricey..
Better to show interest when some sales guys call you up.

If you are working some decent place, it will help and its easy.
If self-employed, you gotta show some good IT returns, or deposits.

Went to Citbank & Stan chartered, both suck!
For Citibank one has to maintian min. 1L balance & get a card after 3 months. For Stan chartered its even worse, 5L min. balance but you get the card in 10days.

Axis Bank turned out a shade better in a way that theres no account limit but you need to have an Account & then FD.

Kotak Mahindra is giving the card pronto & without any Account or FD. Just dont about their service & reputation.

Have been with Citi for last 9 years and had a terrific time no annoying calls for getting a credit card I once got a call and i informed my representative that i don't want any calls further in future after which nothing.Netbanking there is no competition with Citibank everything works online [maybe that's why they don't even have a office] never faced any issues all utility payment , recharge happens within seconds and its all automated the alerts are really good since they are withing 10 seconds of transaction.
I have also being with HDFC , Canara Bank i mostly use Canara bank for my DD needs and some domestic transfers, Even Canara Bank online is better than HDFC it sucks i can't even update my cell no from netbanking and the stupid IPIN reset wants my ATM PIN and if you dont have a Debit Card you can't reset your IPIN online.

My citibank suvidha is zero balance account and I was given my Indian Oil credit card within one week of opening the account!

No hassle of waiting for 3 months or min balance... :)

You better check with them again..

Yes that's true for Metros & bigger Cities but when it comes to smaller Towns, they have different set of policies.
1L is the minimum account balance one needs to have if one is a resident of a smaller town/city. What a crapy policy.

I totally hate this policy of City/Consumer differential/preferential treatment. May such Banks never grow & become bankrupt.

Thanks for the options. Btw, there seems to quite a choice among CC's - Platinum, Gold, Silver, Priveledge, Platinum, etc. Which to choose?

usually that is something the bank will decide based on ur income range. Credit limit will be higher in higher range cards.

usually platinum>titanium>gold>silver.

Though you have exceptions. I have a citibank jet airways gold card with a limit of 2.0 lac and a Stan Chart Platinum card of 25k limit.

Thanks & whats Mastercard? Sorry complete noobie!

A credit limit of ~50 k should be enough for me. Lower the better because if the card gets lost, you loose lesser amount.

I am really sceptical about Kotak. I applied twice, didn't get any update on the first one, on the second one I was told I was not 'eligible' for their card. Funny, as all other banks considered me eligible for their Platinum and Signature cards. I don't give a damn, and I wouldn't bother wasting my time on Kotak again.

Yes actually that's the reason why I did not pounce upon that free card. Wanted to clear the air through members who've had experiences with the bank.

Now this leaves me with few options. Im might just turn back to Canara or SBI.

Among the privates, ICICI ticks the most boxes.

SBI isn't govt entirely. Their cards are through a tie up with GE who handle all the logistics. SBI lends it brand name to the card.

Actually with limited usage any CC is good as soon as pay the dues in full and within the due date. The special credit cards are meant for heavy spenders. By paying in time and in full you will also build a good credit history that would help you to get loans and higher limits on CC later on. If you can't/don't want to pay the due in full - plan in advance and convert the outstanding to EMI/flexipay etc.

Just my two cents.............

There is nothing like small town/city.
If u need a Citi Suvidha Premium Savings Account, then its mandatory to provide 1L cheque or something similar.
But if u get a Citi Suvidha Salary Account, no such hassle :P

Try standard chartered manhattan if they will give you one. Its got the best rewards program I have seen on any card yet.

@agantuk: I believe the issue with kotak is they depend on your house as a major criteria. Anything other than living in an owned house pretty much rules you out I believe. :p

@OP.

Since ur trying to get a CC without an account and fast. You pretty much have NO choice among cards. accept what they offer. Thats the best.

They will upgrade you depending on your usage. in time ofc.

And approaching bank branches for CC is going to be a time waste for you. Always CC is a different department. You go to a branch they say weird stuff. Take my case, Axis send a new CC to my home in TVM when I was in mysore. Called up the CC and said the situation. Since i was here only 1 month and not updated my new address in Axis CC department, they said go to local branch and tell them to receive it for me. Thats the process. only manager has to request it. I had to go there 3 times to make him convince i was genuine.

This after using the card for 4 years. and also Axis account holder. :S.

Sure there is. This is what the Citi bank executive himself told. Then I gave him a solid Medicine.
Bad policy to have. He said we give CC's in Metros & bigger Cities without Account/FD but for smaller towns, policies are different.

Also CC will come after 3 months of opening an account. Now my main concern is a CC & not an account. Why would I wait for so long for a card when other baks are giving the same within 10-15 days.
@jeri, banks like Kotak are providing CC without any account or FD but concern here is their further dealings, banks standing. Im unaware of their service.

I've srticken out Citi, Stan Chart, HDFC. Hope lies with ICICI, SBI, IOB, Canara.

Will be visiting SBI today.
