Which Banks Credit & Debit card

^^ Don't approach any bank directly they'll give you absurd terms. I have two CCs (ICICI and Citi) but I have only a savings account with SBI. It's not necessary to have a bank account but having one helps.

There are some agents sitting at the front entrance of the bank who'll approach you for the card. I have seen this many times at SBI.

@OP.

Honestly i dont think kotak will serve your purpose.

Unless if they are giving you a international Credit Card. Just bite the bullet then. :). If not satisfied in few months, cancel the card.
And cut the card into 2 pieces.

banks standing?. I never opened an account thinking stuffs like that(also service). I open them according to my needs and if it serves my purpose.
Dunno about others. :(. Just check if they have online banking & SMS alerts and all. Thats it.

The guy with the online Citi CC needs to know that if you dont have a account with them , you must be atleast 25 !

yes. Citi policies are too strict while issuing a CC.

If you have a account at citi, then age limit doesn't apply :)

True ! If you have salary account you can get the CC easily but if not then its a problem .

I have/had account/cc on most of them, and from I experience I would suggest avoid Citi. I had a cc from Citi were they used to subscribe and charge me for stupid schemes without my knowledge , which confronted they will tell you we have informed you about this scheme it was your responsibility to opt out :@ . Also they have very few ATM's and fewer branches in most of the Cities (e.g. Hyderabad).

Had good experience with HSBC, StanChat, ICICI, HDFC, SBI, OBC . One of my friend was using Kotak CC, he was happy with their service also.

I think it would be usefull for you to open an HDFC account and then use their HDFC Netsafe facility to generate virtual card numbers using balance from your debit card.

@Archat, right it pays to be a little smart over here. Problem is that I don't reside in Metro/big City, therefore policies are different, often discouraging.
@Jeri, not aware of International or not! I won't be travelling abroad anytime soon, just need a card to shop online Internationally though. Now whether this condition will be fulfilled or not remains to be seen.

@Oracle, Netsafe appears to be a good option. Guess I heard somewhere that ones Debit card can double up as Credit for online payments with Netsafe, don't know whether true or not! I mean can Netsafe generate a CC no. for a Debit card for single payment?

Also whats the differene between VISA & Mastercard?

With debt card also HDFC Netsafe generates a card number and temporary CVV number with the max amount you specify, this could be used online at places which accepts CC. The Netsafe card number is valid for only a single day and only for a single usage. If you want to make more than one txn you need to generate a new netsafe card for it. I think you could only generate 4 Netsafe cards per day.

Most of the txn I make online are using Netsafe and really happy with it.

VISA (Visa International Service Association) and MasterCard are both payment processing institutions, which banks uses for their payment gateways. Most of the sites will accept both Mastercard and Visa, so you can choose any of them without missing out anything major. Although some sites will run promotional offers and additional discount for either Visa or MasterCard.

So in that case, I can opt for HDFC Debit card & use Netsafe to generate a CC No. for online payments where only CC is required.
Many sites do not give the option of payment through Debit card but with Netsafe one can convert Debit to Credit card & make the payment, that's a cool option!

Another thing I wanted to ask. In one of the Banks I have good amount of funds, don't want to risk them due to online frauds/card frauds/phishing, etc. Can I set a lower Credit Limit for my CC in this Account?

If HDFC net safe is enough then go for it. :)

If the bank that u already have with enough funds in it, Why not set say a 20k aside as FD and tell them to issue a CC for it(limit is 20k). Guess it wont take much time. Max 15 days.

My friend did something like that for an ICICI one.

In almost all of the banks your savings account is different from your credit card, so someone won't be able to access your savings banks account deposit even if he steals your cc info.

But still you may have to make payment for any frauds using your cc, so use your cc wisely and only on reputed sites.

That's reassuring to know that variable Credit limit can be set for CC to safeguard ones Funds in Saving Account.

I guess they give a limit to 80-85% of FD. A CC limit of 40K i.e. ~50K FD should do the job for me.

I'll be hitting SBI or Canara soon...

Bumping up a sleeping thread. Apart from the basic difference between a Credit & a Debit, what's the better option..?

I mean any limitations of each, paying online, receiving refunds, International shopping, etc...

Can we use this thread to ask queries about which credit card to go for as per our requirements ? Or should i open another thread or do we have any other dedicated thread ?

My citibank suvidha is zero balance account and I was given my Indian Oil credit card within one week of opening the account!

No hassle of waiting for 3 months or min balance... :)

You better check with them again..

Asking a question from a year old post.

I have been given a Credit card for my Citi suvidha account.
But cancelled it as i don't have use for it back then....

Question for you.. have you tried using the Citi Indian oil CC with international sites like Amazon , bestbuy , tigerdirect ...espcially Steam...

Ok that's something new & interesting. I would like to know more about this!

Had an account in HDFC some years back but their dealings seemed fradulant. Closed the Account & went back to Nationalised banks. Maybe they've improved over time!

Axis Bank offers the same facility (but you need a credit card to generate virtual cards) :), been using them since Sept 2009 no problems at all, and 1 more fancy thing is that they provide you a debit card with a background image of your choice ;), be it your own photo or family photo etc., just go to their website and upload your photo and they'll deliver the debit card in a week or so, it'll be 150 bucks for the service but its a pretty cool card.

Yes please continue here without asking...

Axis Bank offers the same facility.

Thanks.

I was thinking of going in for either American express or Stan-chart or Citibank Debit cards. What are the requirements to get debit cards form these banks?
