Which E-Book reader to buy?

@Lord Nemesis

I hear you bro. I understand why the iPad doesn't appeal to you. In fact, if you read another one of my posts above and in some e-book reader threads in the past, you'll realize that I have been following the e-book reader and tablet scene for a long time. Even I wish the ADAM would come out and be available to us in all its shining (and matte) glory. But I really wanted a device that did all that I wanted it to do and currently only the iPad fits the bill there.

I have said it before and I stand by it even now, reading on the iPad is a breeze for me. When I have stared at laptop and monitor screens at full brightness for hours and hours, then reading on the iPad LCD with adjustable brightness is really soothing. I know e-ink is still better but I wanted more out of my second device.

I looked at all the tablets/MIDs/PMPs in the US market as well as read about the ones available in the Chinese market. None of them turned out to be the complete package. Some have old Android builds and don't have the hardware for future updates, others have rickety hardware to begin with, while others still have Windows based OS (yuck!). I know you work with iPads and mobile OSs and probably full OSs on tablet computers too, but tell me one device where Windows OS (CE or 7) has worked well (minimum screen size 6"). They have all had their problems and faded away into obscurity. Even I would like a good strong Android based tablet (looks towards ADAM again), but there is none in the market today. That is where iPad stands out. It is good at what it does. I know it doesn't have flash on it, but I have yet to encounter a website that has given me trouble, at least not the ones I frequent. Web surfing is nice, reading is cool, even better is reading comics and graphic novels, and some of the games are plain brilliant! Have you seen the iPad play a 720p video that has been encoded properly? It is amazing. If I want to play Halo or God of War I'll go to my consoles, iPad is a portable device and it does that better than anything else.

Apple makes its profit based on its products. The products invariably do well. Don't get me wrong, I hate Macs and every accessory by Apple. I only like iOS devices by Apple.

Lastly, based on your requirements you should just wait for a super duper powerful tablet PC to come into the market someday. Maybe the ADAM will actually live up to the hype and beat the living lights out of the iPad (I seriously hope so, and I will get one), or maybe Microsoft will actually come up with the Courier. Who knows? For the moment the winner of the market is the iPad and thats what I wanted. :)

Do you mind telling me about how you find the iPad restrictive? What is it that you want to do with a tablet/netbook/e-book reader that the iPad can't do? Please don't say flash, because HTML5 is here and thousands of youtube videos are already playable natively in Mobile Safari.

Good reads for all you people who are confused about what to get.

You don't need a tablet or e-Reader but you're gonna want one

Well, I paid $139 (Kindle) + $20 (shipping) + $56 (import fees deposit).

Hopefully, they'll gimme at least $30 back. Fingers crossed!

Okay, sony has finally release PRS 650 and PRS 350. ^50 is priced at $229 and 350 at $179.... Kindle Wins by a huge margin.......

The only good news is that they have dropped the price of PRS 300 to $129 fronm $149...... Okay am fcuked now, and am going for Kindle 3 Wifi. I just hope that all my pdfs converted to mobi format give me the same experience as when converted to epub and viewed on Sony... :(.... Can any one of Kindle owner here convert a pdf to mobi and tell me the experience?????? I mean is it better than viewing pdf directly on kindle or not?
Kindle 3 has only 4GB of storage which is not expandable. If only Nook could do landscape mode./....... :(

4Gb should be more than enough. With that much storage on hand, managing it on the device is a much bigger problem :P

As for PDF to mobi, one of my friends who has the Kindle 2 says its pretty much the same as doing pdf to ePub, so there shouldnt be much difference.

PDF's are everywhere. I wish PubMed and science journals provided article in some other format like ePub. I want to be able to take notes and highlight the text I read easily. I have to take print-outs of everything I need to read.

BTW, is PRS 300 enough for novels? Or will the small screen size take the fun out of reading?

Its enough for novels, but purists wont agree... And, given the price situation right now, the best option is kindle 3 wifi. No sense saving 20 bucks for a sony 5" reader, if that...

I need an ebook reader which supports chm and pdf files, most of my text books are in that format. And should have wifi. So please suggest the best possible reader with these features

I just bought kindle 2 from fellow member here , pretty satsisfied ,i paid a bit premium knowin 3 is gettin shipped in a month but needed that urgently so just went n got that , pdf to mobi conversion is pretty nice everythin works so good so no issues for all those pdf and epub files :) and wow i can surf a bit anywhere anytime n battery just don wanto finish 1ly
If this is the scene with kindle 2 just imagine how much better 3 will be , just go for it guys:)

@atiamd: Reflow issues, no. If your source pdf isnt formatted correctly for reflow, it will look the almost the same, whether you convert to ePub or to mobi. There the native pdf landscape and zooming on the K3 is better, though in almost all circumstances for pure text its usually ok to convert and use.

@Baccilus: The K3 allows notes etc in pdfs now :) magnification is also supposedly better.

I have seen the 5" Sony, but once you have used a 6" one it does appear a bit cramped. Only use is if you really want something smaller in size.

@syedfarhan: The kindle 3 should do fine. It has wifi. You can read pdfs direct or simply convert both pdfs and chm to mobi format. The free Calibre e-book management program is the best at ebook conversions across formats.

@agantuk: The browser on the K2 was limited quite a bit in terms of what it could render etc. The K3 browser is much better. Webkit based, so pretty much hte same as that on the nook, looks like a proper black and white browser. No limitations on websites, just dont expect youtube to work :P

I found many videos on youtube on Kindle 3. I am 90% buying it. Just waitin for Sei to reply to some of my queries that I could not post here.

Anyways, can we get a portable LED light anywhere in India for cheap that can clip on my new reader?
