Which E-Book reader to buy?

Even the US version has a $2 surcharge if bought outside the US. Even if you change your country to US, you will be able to download about 4 or 5 books at regular price form Amazon. After that they will ask you to contact customer care to VERIFY that you are an American. Its not just 3G. Outside US, $2 surcharge, period. The only workaround is that you will have to share your account with someone in US and ask them to download a book every time you receive that message. This will reset the warning for another 5 or so books. I tried explaining this in an earlier post too. Just try downloading all the free ebooks you can from amazon and you will know what I mean. I have shared my account with my girlie who lives in US. She does this for me.
I was just looking for a clarification on how Amazon had things set up. Thanks for the information.

(I bought my Dad a Nook so he can just side-load all the books he wants. One of the reasons I chose it over the Kindle)

Keeping an eye on the Adam as well. Also have a couple of colleagues interested in the basic version. I just want them to price it properly in the Indian market. This device if priced properly will eat the iPad lol! xD
If priced properly and given full undivided after sales support. With the plethora of android based tablets coming in within the year, its going to be tough making a decision for tablet/e-reader buyers. The thing with android tablets will be the hardware specs on those devices. Most of the tablets in the market already have sub-par hardware and most likely will not even get to android 3.0.

I really hope they live to the world's expectations with the Adam. If the hardware is top notch, regular software support is provided, and they keep improving on their products all the time then it will surely kick iPad in the ass. The only reason why apple is leading is that they tune their hardware for their software and vice a versa.

On a different note I met this elderly gentleman at the local bookstore I frequent and he was asking the girl at the counter about the availability of various e-readers. Since the girl did not know much and I was jobless at the time, I jumped in and got talking with the man. He was quite well informed about the current tech scene and was open to suggestions. I was reading on my iPad and he was very intrigued by it. Over the course of our conversation he told me that he too had done extensive research on e-readers and tablets and was always landing up with the iPad as the best choice. We also discussed at length the upcoming Adam and other android based tablets. It was quite fascinating to get a tech enthusiasts opinions.

And Baccilus, I will certainly send these docs to amazon and let you know. But, I have tried my own docs and I am not satisfied. ITs not the fault of amazon. Its just that 6 inch of screen is not good enough. You will lose all the links from pdf's TOC and also some of the images. For pdfs I think the best reader is Kindle DX or maybe PRS 900. Also, teh results are EXACTLY the same as when converted by Calibre to azw or mobi format. :(

Thanks atiamd. At least I will know how bad it looks. I couldn't afford any of the bigger eBook readers, so this was the only choice I had.

Like I said earlier in the thread. For my Nook, the case is that if the PDF is a proper PDF i.e. not scanned images but rather text, then it reflows the text according to the font settings. The end result is pretty good. Apart from that I think that a PDF with lots of images and links will fail. A netbook is a much better option for that :)

i just wish some company would release a 9inch e-reader with e-ink screen, no gps or wifi, just a usb port and sd slot for storage and android or any os, for less than 5000 INR.
Dream on! :P

Whats so special about your pdf. I have a pdf which contains scanned images, converting to mobi didnt help, so I directly copied the pdf to kindle and changed the orientation to landscape. Its not a perfect solution but I can read the pdf, so I am not complaining. The same pdf is unreadable in portrait mode.

I usually read pdf's from science journals like Nature, etc. If you have the device, please see if they can be read comfortably on the kindle. I don't think they would scan and publish the documents for which they charge so much of money.

See if this displays on the Kindle in a readable manner:

well, the issue is usually on how the pdf has been created. most pdf, when automatically converted seem to look horrible.

i have the kindle and so i converted the document you have uploaded using mobipocket creator and tried to view it on kindle. it looked horrible with the pictures going over to the next page and the text having a new line break in between sentence. plus a lot of times, in the journal the first alphabet of the text is in large size, and that ie becoming a headline.

so looks bad.

viewing in native pdf mode, things is a lot better. as hacker pointed out, reading the pdf into landscape mode, you dont need to do much horizontal scrolling if you chose the autofit option. the text looked pretty light, but kindle allows you to increase the font contrast in case of pdf, and setting the contrast to darkest seems to make the document readable enought.

but, yes the font size might seem microscopic for reading longs hours. here are picture on how the pdf looked on kindle in native mode.

I have no idea. It is lying at Amarbir's office in USA. But he wants to get all his stuff together so he can save on shipping. The way things are going, I think it may take 7-10 days more.

BTW, I hope I will be able to register the kindle in my name. It won't be registered in Lynx name, will it?

Even if it is, just deregister it and then register it with your name. Make sure, you create an account on Amazon before doing that.

Menu>settings> Deregister............ On Kindle

Also, I would suggest you to download Kindle App for PC. You can not sync the content by USB cable between the two, but if you have a router, then it will be awesome. BTW, I have tried wifi in public places (CCD) and it did not work. Dunno why... :(

I got my Kindle 3 finally. I am loving it. Still loading books and all into it so I haven't read anything much on it. I love the fact that with calibre I can put epub books in it which are converted into the Kindle format while copying. I can also read Times of India for free. But the best thing about it is the dis play. I say it feels better than paper.

Congrats! How exactly do you get free TOI though? Unless you are converting the epaper PDF from TOI?
There is a big "Fetch News" icon in Calibre. Just click on it and select the paper you want. Other papers are available too. Then simply send it to the device or you may send the downloaded paper to your Kindle email ID.

@Logistopath: I will surely write a small review, just want to spend some time with it first.

Guys I am struggling with my new Kindle. First, as soon as I changed my country to a US address, my WiFi stopped connecting... I don't know if the issues are related. Then I tried to reboot the device from settings>reboot and it seems to be stuck now. It just reads "Please wait a moment while your Kindle starts up" and it has been stuck at that for a really long time.
