Guys I am struggling with my new Kindle. First, as soon as I changed my country to a US address, my WiFi stopped connecting... I don't know if the issues are related. Then I tried to reboot the device from settings>reboot and it seems to be stuck now. It just reads "Please wait a moment while your Kindle starts up" and it has been stuck at that for a really long time.
well, did u try hard resetting it ? press the power switch for about 15-20 seconds and let go.

OK that worked. Thanks. Repping you buddy.

Guys, should I update the Firmware to 3.0.3? From what I read, I wont be able to Jailbreak the Kindle after the Update but I can't understand the advantages of Jailbreaking it either.

I can't rep you because I need to spread the reputation around first.

well, just update the firmware and also installed the jailbreak hack. It seem that will be required to install the custom screensaver and fonts.

I jailbroke the 3.0.1 firmware and then did the kindle 3.0.3 offical update. Went smoothly and took less than about 15 minutes for the entire process.

Cant say that I notice any difference, but i guess the fun will begin when i install custom fonts/screensaver

Custom fonts are a PITA. You can not install all the fonts at the same time. Only one at a time, which sucks. Also some people have reported garbled texts and such, nothing major. Screensavers might be cool..... I jailbroke my kindle yesterday and then realised its not of much use to me. But to each his own i guess..... So have you started reading any book yet?

well, yeah. I installed the custom fonts and custom screeen saver and then uninstalled the fonts.

Me finished about ten book in the last few days :p Foundation series by Isaac Asimov, Archer and a John Grisham and wuthering heights.

I have upgraded to the latest firmware without Jail breaking it. The Squeeze doesn't seem worth the juice to me.
I am currently reading "The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan.
You know I have observed that a bit of glare is there in the Kindle 3 too. But it is only as much as the more expensive Textbooks that I have. It only reflects light sources and not actual images. You won't see your face in it, only the tubelight when it is held of at a particular angle. Those who have seen it will understand why it is called pearl display.
BTW, it is so expensive that I told my mom that I bought it for 3K :S.

I wonder why everyone publishes all the stuff in PDF format. It is the lamest format ever.

Yeah, the glare is pretty noticeable at particular angles. It does feel you are reading on a glossy paper. But if you take the kindle in sunlight, that is strangely hardly noticeable. It looks awesome in direct sunlight.

Yeah , this glare/reflection was what I was trying to explain in the other thread, but some morons just won't get it. One of the reputed members even went ahead and showed me the dictionary meaning of the word GLARE. I gave up right then. Sometimes, its no use explaining things and let nature take its course. Now, whoever is reading this will know what I was talking about.

Ten books, huh..... wow....
I am gonna start Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon after this. Has anybody read this?

Guys, from where are you buying your eBooks? I guess Kindle is the only place we can buy from. But that $2.5 surcharge is really annoying.

You are better off getting it from gutenberg.com, if they are classics stuff.

Unfortunately, good up to date science books are not available at Gutenberg. From any other source they are only available in the PDF format. PDF convert really badly to other formats. Mostly, there are line breaks where there should be none.

I am sorry to say this but I get most of my books from where I should not, you know. I have bought only 3 books so far from Amazon

I have bought just one up till now. But I will buy more books if I get them at the price they are available in US. And they better be cheaper than Flipkart.

Very important question guys: Does Amazon charge me for emailing me the documents I send them at my kindle email ID? I just read a discussion at mobileread forum where they were discussing the same. I have set up my VISA card with my Amazon account and I don't know how to check out this detail other than to go to my bank. I don't have Internet banking for this account of mine.

There is a setting on manage your kindle page. It says "maximum amount to be deducted for conversion". Set it to 0.00.

Although, I should tell you that for wifi models, they will not charge you as they are not delivering it to you via 3G. Some people at mobileread are just retarded and start a thread without finding out details. There are so many that I only laugh at em and move on. I dont judge em as all of 'em cant be technically intelligent, but I know when to move on and I sure you are capable of doing this too. :P But, yeah to be safe use that option. I have already done that. Rest assured though, Wifi model does not cost a dime with conversion. Also, there are two email addreses that are used for conversion: yourname@kindle.com and yourname@free-kindle.com. I use the second one.

And please update your signature to reflect that you are the proud owner of a Kindle. We are just a few of Indians who have an e reader

Also, just change your billing address to a Valid US address ( a restaurant or a hotel or something). Then use a US proxy to visit Amazon. It works.

What I have done is that I have changed my billing address to a hotel in US. At work, my network tells Amazon that my IP is american. I download books this way (the free ones without paying a ****in' dollar). So, I am betting a US proxy should work.

Do you have a friend living in US?

I will surely update my signature today. And thanks for the free-kindle address. I didn't know about it. I am already using a US address that I got through googling my own name. Although Amazon has warned me a couple of times about not being in US, it has not stopped me from buying at US prices yet. I can still Download anything at US prices from them. I will go Check my account summary tomorrow to make sure I haven't been charged extra for wireless delivery. They are already charging a 2-5$ surcharge from people outside US for content delivery, irrespective of whether one has a WiFi or a 3G model.

This happens when you download say 4 or 5 books from outside US. When this happens download one book from a US address and this counter will reset.

Try a US proxy dude and let me know.

Another solution is that if you know anybody from US, then you can share your account details with them and ask them to do this counter reset thing for you. I do it. Also, its a good idea if you remove that credit card from Amazon. When you need to buy something, add it again. And then delete it.

btw, is there considerable differnce between the conversion done by either calibre or by amazon email service for pdf files or other files ?

Honestly speaking I didn't find any difference. Both are equally bad.

It depends on the document. Sometimes calibre is better, sometimes Amazon

Although, the best way is to first convert the file using mobipocket and then convert the resulting PRC to azw or mobi using Calibre. It even keeps the pictures and description intact. I am quite happy with it. This is the best there is, although not perfect.
