Thank you very much for replying !

I have never used Shadow copy, so I am okay with that.

I have checked the compatibility by W8 Upgrade Assistant. It just reported one or two software need to be updated, rest was fine. So I can use the same drivers which I used for Win 7 or do I need to download them again ?

Also is there any way to take back up of my current Win 7 [Documents & Programs] and use that in Win 8 ??
As Rakesh said it'd be good to be prepared beforehand by downloading the drivers so that you can use them if and when needed, there is nothing like Titanium backup for a PC if you mean by backup program where you can restore your apps and programs and document settings after installing a new OS, but if you want to image your system then I use Acronis True Image for that.

I hate windows 8. I just cannot log in to any of my two local accounts with the correct password on the first try. After putting the same password a billion times it lets me log in. Like all of a sudden the till now incorrect password became correct. Damn waste of money. Feel like punching the log in screen.
weird problem, never faced anything like this

paarkhi - thank you for replying !

My C drive is 100GB. My Documents + My Downloads + Desktop make some 25GB. Program Files are of 5GB. Then where's rest of space ? I am not getting where is the data. All I see is system files :-/

I am on Win 7 Pro 64Bit edition.

EDIT : C:\users\avi has some 35GB Data. So that makes it right.

Now long process of downloading each drivers starts :-/

Same had happened to me when i first installed win8 , had to reinstall

problem got solved. i uninstalled all extra english languages from languages menu from admin account. windows installed uk english along with us english. plus i had indian english too. made us eng default and removed uk and india eng. can log in at first try now properly.

i like the ribbon interface. has all the frequently and not so frequently used options. example clicking on drive will give options for defrag, cleanup, etc. also saw that there is no confirmation when deleting any file. it just deletes directly to recycle bin.

Thank you everyone fro helping me !

I have successfully upgraded to W8 & dual booted with Mountain Lion :)

W8 is so far good. My laptop [Dell XPS L501x] isn't officially supported, so had to spend some time downloading correct drivers. Also, my trackpad supports a gesture, swiping on it from right to left brings the side menu on right side. So I don't have to move my mouse to the corner everytime.

now please share :

Microsoft Windows 8 Professional: Flipkart.com: Microsoft Operating Systems

Is this is full retail copy or just 1 time activation machine locked version ? Though no where they mention this upgrade version.

What will be the actual price of win 8 pro in india ?

I think that is the upgrade version of Win 8, and not the System Builder version. Officially you should have a valid version of Windows XP, Vista or 7 to use it , the online version of which is available for 1999 /-.

For those of you who were extremely confused about the download version and dvd version available in stores. let me make a few clarification. 1. The version of windows DVD available on Flipkart is the retail version AND upgrade version. You get a 32 bit and 64 bit version DVD and a single product key. The Customer Support people at flipkart do not know this. They will either tell you that its a upgrade only version or put you on hold forever (like they did to me). 2. Another thing you need to know is that all versions of win 8 pro will check for previous version of windows installation during setup. If you attempt to install from a formatted disk your product key will not activate properly. A work around suggested by Microsoft's own Customer Support is a registry edit (tutorial available on the internet) Another simple workaround is to simply create an empty 'windows' folder in your formatted HDD before installing windows 8(win 8 setup will take the empty folder as a previous version of windows :D..you can then use win 8 setup to reformat the disk before installation). This option works perfectly for the retail DVD available from flipkart. Don't know if it works for the download version.

How good is the native firewall and anti-virus. I am wondering if I should download a third party firewall and av. How many of you guys are using a third party security software ?

Those who are planning to upgrade to 8 , it provides no benefit to you unless you are a Win8 Phone app dev, win phn 8 sdk needs min win 8 to run . Unless it is the criteria there is no point of upgrading to it .

Note: people using windows 8 pro get free media center product key until end of jan Add features - Microsoft Windows

legal windows 8 will be unaffordable after jan 2013. I heard the prices will be around Rs 10k-11k for the pro version.

That is not going to happen, Apple has changed the whole software industry. MS is going to keep the price for windows 8 low even after jan 2013 because they can make more money by getting the app store commission when people buy apps in the windows store.

Microsoft is only selling upgrade versions of Windows 8. You can also get OEM versions but those are not available for old pc's. OEM version is only available with new pc or if you get them imported from amazon etc.
I dont think Microsoft plans to sell retail versions of this product. Probably Windows 9 would be available in retail versions.

Native firewall and antivirus is very good. Better than avast which i have also installed. The built in av caught a program faster than avast. Only drawback is it wants to know what to do with the file before proceeding, but you could make it quarantine it automatically in settings i guess. Avast usually automatically quarantines a file or sandboxes it.

+1.

I think Windows Defender works pretty well. It is also low on resources compared to other av's. And if you want, you can still install Microsoft Security Essentials. [I haven't]

few shortcuts I have found :

Windows+X - Power menu
Task Manager - Ctrl+Shift+Esc [should work for Win 7 too]
Windows+E - Computer (File Explorer)
Windows+D - Desktop
Windows+, (comma) - sneak-peek of the Desktop
Windows+. - toggles windows-snap [cool one]
Windows+C - Charms bar
Windows+I - Settings on the Charms bar
Windows+W - Search for all System settings

please do share if you have found any tips & tricks.

Windows Defender includes Security Essentials in Windows 8. You can't install it separately because it is all there anyway. Never had any issues with it.

There's an official cheat sheet for shortcuts online, very useful.

Microsoft has clearly mentioned in their site that this is a promotional offer that will run out uptill Jan 31st. quoting from their site.
Promotion details

The promotional price is limited to one upgrade per PC and a maximum limit of five upgrade licenses per customer.
This promotion is available beginning on October 26, 2012 and runs until January 31, 2013, inclusive.
Anyway System builder versions of windows 8 pro are out in Amazon.com and are priced at ~195$ . Windows 7 system builder versions are selling at around the same price. This introductory price offer is just to hustle users into windows 8 and build a critical mass of users before the price hike.

I just rechecked and what you said is correct. The retail DVD available on flipkart is officially an 'upgrade version'. But as I have found out you can make a clean installation with the 'upgrade pack'. I have heard of instances where MS CS techs helped customers make a clean install of the OS(using the registry workaround I mentioned in my previous post) and in one case even gave them a free retail product key !.I have a feeling Microsoft is doing this on purpose to create a hype. Good to know that I can stick with the native apps. From what I read third party software including my favourite Comodo firewall seems to have compatibility issues with win 8.
