Windows Vista Home Premium: 32bit or 64bit?

1: No compatibility with old 16-bit Windows apps. This means ancient Windows 3.x software, which most people don't run any more, but 16-bit code can still pop up in the darndest places. Like, for instance, in the installer programs for other apps.

2: Various and assorted application compatibility problems. This has improved considerably as of early 2008, but there's still no blanket guarantee that a given piece of software - especially an older piece of software - will work in 32-bit Vista, much less 64-bit.

3: No compatibility with existing 32-bit drivers. Everything on your computer will need a new driver. 64-bit WinXP is the same, and there aren't many 64-bit computers on which Vista won't at least install, but 64-bit Windows also has...

4: No support for unsigned kernel-mode drivers.

Ask Dan: 32 or 64 bit Vista?

Flexbeta has an interesting comparison between Vista 32-bit and Vista 64-bit edition. They tested installation time, integer processing, 2D graphics, memory speed, disk speed, 3D graphics and measured the PassMark rating. Their conclusion: Vista 64-bit does not bring any real advantage with respect to performance over Vista 32-bit.

From an article written 2006 sept.

Maybe 32bit Vista is the way to go. Oh, I am so confused.

look mate, do everyone a favor and put everything in a single thread :P

opening a new thread for everything doesnt make sense...sidetracks/confuses. those of us who wat to help

64 bit is fine. And perf is better too... that 2006 article is old.

I have been using 64 bit Vista over a year, never came across anything I couldn't run.

As for signed drivers, well, there is no issue in getting them (that is, if a driver exists for x64 Vista, it will be signed. Unless you plan on hacking up your own drivers, it won't affect you).

Acc to this :
bit-tech.net | Review - Is More Memory Better?

... but the stigma against Vista x64 is no longer true: drivers are readily available and since Service Pack 1, we've found it works very well indeed. In a recent community poll we found half of those questioned already run Vista x64 with SP1 and a good amount of those still running a 32-bit OS were considering the upgrade sometime soon too ...

The article compares 2x1GB vs 2x2GB vs 4x2GB, also 4x1GB with Vista64 HP. Check out the gaming results there, esp Crysis.

While these few tests don't cover the incredible breadth of possible PC usage scenarios, there is significant evidence to suggest that 4GB should be the target that people should aim for when buying a new PC or upgrading...at least if you're using Vista. But as much as we hate to admit it, we'll all eventually leave XP at some point because of DirectX 10.

Thanks guys...That helped :)

@techie

All threads ask different Questions, albeit on Vista. Also by having the thread title describe exactly the Questions/Contents it makes for better categorization.

^^ it does make for better categorization.. but the questions/issues were basically all the same.. all about Vista..

sometimes.. too much of attention to detail can become a pita.

anyway.. good to know that you got stuff figured out in the end.

Dont tempt me to start another thread on this :P

I have been using x64 for 8 months and no problems at all. Oblivion worked just fine, which is a 2004 game, so fairly old in the grand scheme of computer things.

Can I manage with 2GB RAM for a month if I go for the 64bit version?

Just moderate gaming and stuff.

how much are you using right now? 64bit doesnt mean that you MUST use 4gigs.

it just means that IF you have 4gigs, your OS can utilize all 4gigs.

If u have enough RAM vista 64 is smooth silk im using it for a month and its def better than XP , havent tried gaming though :)

2GB will be smooth, if u can get 4gb to the monster it would be smooth as silk :)

for any normal usage etc, 2 Gbs is enough. Look at the articles linked in above posts. They used 64-bit with 2gb when comparing. Sure, 4Gb will make a diff in some memory intensive games etc, but for everything else, 2Gb will do the job just fine :)

Thanks Guys!

Cant find anyone who is selling Vista Home Premium 64bit.

Ultimate 64bit available though for 14.5k...

Nothing that special in Ultimate for home users :)

get Home premium 32-bit. Then call MS and they ll send you a 64bit disc for the same for like 500-1k more for handling shipping etc i believe. Contact MS india on their wbsite/toll-free number and confirm the same. Shud be cheaper than buying ultimate ;)

Ultimate by default comes with both 32 AND 64 bit discs.
