Microsoft replacing Xbox 360s damaged by disc update

Microsoft’s latest firmware for its Xbox 360 gaming console adds support for the new XGD3 DVD disc format that can support an additional gigabyte of data—which means game developers can pack more content on each disc. However, reports have some older Xbox 360 consoles unable to play games after applying the update—and Microsoft is replacing those consoles with new Xbox 360 Slim units (with a 250 GB hard drive) and a free year of Xbox Live to make up for the hassle.

According to EuroGamer, Microsoft says a “very small number” of older consoles are impacted by the problem, and Microsoft is urging anyone experiencing problems with the new firmware update to contact Xbox support. For users who have their consoles connected to Xbox Live, the company can apparently detect when the firmware update is causing problems, and is pro-actively contacting impacted customers and offering a replacement console. The error apparently produces a unique “disc unreadable” or “disc unsupported” error on the system’s display.

According to some reports, impacted consoles seem to be primarily first-generation Xbox 360 consoles from the system’s introduction back in 2005 and 2006. Ironically, many of these consoles were already replaced by Microsoft: the company was forced to set aside over a billion dollars (and extend the Xbox 360 warranty out to three years) to cover high rates of hardware failure in early Xbox 360 systems.

Some other reports indicate the firmware update also includes new technologies intended to combat piracy.

Unfortunately, this new update wasn't a retail one. It was only made available in the form a BETA update via the Halo: Reach discs, to a selected few people, who subscribed to be test dummies for this program. So those affected by this BETA update will be eligible for this new console. :P
 
You mean does NOT have XGD3 support? I'll wait for the final firmware or X360key, depending on which delivers as the optimum solution. If it's flashing, I'll be doing it on my own this time. :)
 
Yes it does not support XGD3 Support it supports latest dashboard hence its labelled as 1.9 , 2.0 would have XGD3 support

Hi,

Please suggest if i should do this update ?

I have downloaded it from torrentz. But i dont know if i should do it or not ? Is this possible that they just sent me the same model that i have instead of Xbox slim and say it is not applicable in India.

Someone plese tell me what to do. i have a core console btw (with 60Gb hdd) Xenon model (oldest one ).

Whats with the attitude brother. Yes i did read the post , and i could not get the answer to my question. May be its there and i couldnt find it. So i asked a question. I though the whole point of such forums was to get help or share information.

Anyways , if you think my question was too stupid for you to answer that kindly ignore.
 
Firstly i see you are not new to the forums , so that privilege is gone..

In Regards to your query why did you think they would send the same model since as per the policy they will send the Slims only , you can check whether your console is affected or not going to http://myservice.xbox.com and enter your console id

Whichever way you get the Dashboard update does not matter
 
Hi again guys,

Called up XBOX support , they say in INDIA they don`t have this support. And it seems like they were in fact unaware of this problem. They say that if you are getting DISC UNREADABLE / DISC UNPLAYABLE error , we would replace with the same version and not he slim version.

Can someone point me to a video of this error , i found it on Youtube yesterday but cannot find it today. Have been looking for about 30 minutes . And does someone also knows if this error flashes any light on the screen or on console ??

Ok got home early today and flashed LT 1.92, LT 2.0 is also done for phat and is in testing phase
 
Its coming , LT 2.0 would be released in 2 phases expect Phat LT 2.0 by next Sunday
 
If it comes out by next Sunday or anywhere between next 2 weeks, I'll definitely rip apart my console and flash it. I have a 2 week vacation planned, so time's not an issue. :D
