Audio Random IEM / Headphone Rants

@esanthosh

Agree that it's a vicious circle but if I have the reach then I'll look for the best one in joker's thread. And may be after getting that, I will consider getting into portable amps and custom cables or if my wallet be lucky then be contented for a while before I burn another hole. Or perhaps start out with another hobby.

I see that Miracle and Merlin go well to complement each other.

Glad that you liked it.

Not sure I can still agree with that thinking. Been there, done that - was satisfied with EX-1000 and a clutch of IEMs for a while, upgraded the source + amps, even bought my costliest cable to date - something that cannot be used with anything else, remained far more satisfied and at peace with my portable setup (many times over compared to my headphone setup). For 6-7 months was quiet and where am I now? ;)

The level in the game will change, but the underlying player, his behavior and psychology remain the same. Quoting from one of my (recent) favorite posts here

Mainstream films seem like children's fairy tales. Art house films seem like grown up fairy tales. When we are young we get influenced or inspired at the drop of a hat. All the secrets of the universe seem to be within reach. But as one grows older, life may start seeming like the parcel game which children play. Every unraveling of the parcel reveals another layer. But when the music finally stops and the last wrapping is uncovered, we may find there is nothing inside.

I am neither disillusioned nor unhappy with life. I am intrigued by the fact one is born in ignorance and dies in ignorance. Any meaning that we choose to give to life has to come from within.

The game is interesting, none the less. The chase is always inevitably more interesting than conquering it (that's how good movies make you sit for 2 odd hours). I am afraid that I might find nothing at the end of it all, just more to chase around.

Two short comparisons

Back to regular programming.....

Brainwavz M4 vs SoundMagic E30

E30, except for the good looking metal sleeve on Y-split and plug, looks a bit silly actually. It feels lighter in weight, but M4 is not a heavy weight or larger in form factor either.

On the surface, there are a couple of similarities between the two viz., Mid range is recessed, they are not sibilant. But there are plenty of differences. E30 is the more balanced of the two, M4 is the detailed one. E30 wins over in the sound stage and has a warmer coloration of the mid range which is easier on the ears, especially during background listening. But those are the only two areas where E30 takes the lead. M4 has better resolution all around. While E30 leans towards spaciousness by placing everything backward, M4 is much more intimate. M4 feels a little faster as well, but may be a bit compressed in the dynamic range. I am not sure about this, but M4 may have the same M series driver re-tuned. Will know for sure when I get the Pro Alpha (hopefully tomorrow or Monday) and do an A:B.

While M4's bass can be a bit boomy at times, E30's bass is a tighter in comparison. Despite that, M4's bass is forward, better textured, has better extension and resolution. The mid range of M4 is a little more forward compared to E30, has good texture and presents details better. E30 has a much leaner note and not as much resolution and hence feels a bit short changed. The treble of E30 takes a back seat, while M4 is forward with better extension (though not all the way), a lot more body and lot more quantity. Sound stage is one area where E30 trumps the M4. M4 has decent depth, but feels closed in when coming from E30.

M4 during this short comparison felt like a small tier up from E30. But, I am not sure it would suit everybody like the M1 and M2. I still think it's much easier for me to recommend E30 over M4 to most. But personally, I'd choose M4 easily.

Dunu DN-18 Hawkeye vs SoundMagic E10M

Whether it's the housing, strain relief or the plug, Dunu takes the cake in build quality. It's smaller and more comfortable than E10. There's no doubt that the externals belong to the Dunu.

In terms of sound, they are not that much apart though. They both have a wide sound stage and do imaging well enough for the price. There are a few major differences that turn the tide in favor of E10M. DN-18 has more bass quantity for sure which makes E10 look bass light in comparison. The bass of DN18 is fairly thick, more punchy, well extended. But what it does not do well is control, especially towards the sub-bass region. It feels a bit excessive at times. The thickness coupled with the good mid-bass quantity intrudes into the mid range more often than E10. E10 feels more balanced because of this. The mid range of DN18 is a little dark colored, reminds me of Spider-man 3 as far as coloration goes - red to black when going from E10 to DN18. While detail levels are similar and both are smoother, E10's mid range is warmer, a bit more forward, clearer and is indeed more engaging of the two. DN18's treble is last in it's balance scheme, recessed and devoid of sparkle. E10's treble is relatively forward (more in line with mids), crisper and has more sparkle.

Among the two, I'll take E10 easily though I do not feel DN-18 is too far behind in overall SQ.

Further Plans (as long as @psygeist, @abhi_jollyguy, @gREen and @eternoMind are ok with this)

  1. M4 vs Pro Alpha
  2. Pro Alpha vs E10M
  3. A161P vs EPH-100 (Flagship vs Flagship)
  4. TF10 vs EPH-100 (old triple driver BA vs the new single micro-driver dynamic that is supposed to be better)
  5. A161P vs XCape v1 (selfish reason - see if I can replace the discontinued XCape with A161)
  6. A161P vs Phonak PFE 111 (Let's see how it holds up against one of my favorites)
  7. FXD80 vs EPH-100 (Post 100 hours "mandatory burn-in". New FOTM vs Old FOTM)
  8. FI-BA-SB vs SM3 v1 (FAD tuning of mids vs Earsonics tuning)

Each comparison likely to take a day. Once complete (unless I come up with something else), I'll send the loaners back on their way.

Also planning (not immediately) - All JVC Shoot out : FXT90 vs FXD70 vs FXD80 vs FX700

Is it FA-003 (Looks too similar to Brainwavz HM5)?

Am seriously considering pruning my IEM, Headphone, Source and Amps inventory. May need to buy a few replacements before that. But too lazy to start a Sale thread :(

@abhi_jollyguy,

Fischer FA-003 == Brainwavz HM5. I'd have been very happy to get rid of mine as it's lying around completely unused. If only you told me before....

In any case, waiting for your impressions. Hope it keeps you happy enough to give me more time with the Yamahas ;)

I do not usually wear IEMs when I am sleepy / trying to sleep. It often disturbs (mind gets alert to a familiar song) than relax me. I don't even like using IEMs on a daily basis, actually!

But even otherwise, something with lesser bass quantity like XBA-1 suits me better. DN-18's bass can be intrusive on some tracks. To each his own anyways :)

Unrelated...

I have a J3 loaner for a short while. It's been a year since I sold S9. Wanted to try out a Cowon and see how they sound now that I've settled on UHA-6S, iPod and the like. Instead of buying, a friend saved me lot of $$$ (for now) by sending his. Thank you!

But I am seriously thinking of X9 still. Something that can run unattended along side QA350 for more than 2 days. According to my burn-in log, QA350 should be touching 700 hours of "burning in" IEMs and headphones by next week. This is apart from the normal listening.

Is there anybody here who prefers Pro Alpha to M1 or M2?

I keep it at low volume so that I barely know what is playing except for the subtle silhouette, and mind can relax. The bass thing comes into play when one is hearing bass and beat heavy tracks. Not too brightness at the top end helps too, which actually renders it as relaxing. I mostly listen to similar music like these during sleep:

I do take break from listening after few days.

Mostly use RE-0 (already have a spare one) or Dunu DN-18 while sleeping.

I do the night time, low volume listening you describe, but typically when I am working on something else. Even after spending more than two years with IEMs, I still find sticking something inside my ear often unnatural and disturbing :p. I fall asleep more easily watching TV than music / reading a book.

But, I was not listening to a bass-heavy music track. IIRC, it was the opening moments of DT's 'Repentence' and some other track by Hendrix where I found the bass to creep up more than I liked. At low volumes, we would hear less bass and treble though! Will check out the tracks later on.

Brainwavz : Old vs New - Pro Alpha vs M4

In every company's line-up, there are models which get lost in the shuffle. For instance, we all know about Sennheiser IE8 and we know a bit about IE7, but how many own or talk about IE6? Even with the recent JVC FXDs, FXD80 gets the mind share and lots of owners, FXD70s got a few owners, but not many own or talk about FXD60. Within TE, most attention is paid to M2 and M1 followed by M3 (most because of the price), but I rarely see a mention of Pro Alpha. Back when I did the Xears vs Brainwavz comparison, I saw a very strong family resemblance in sound across the line from Pro Alpha (herein referred to as PA) to M3. That resemblance has not died off completely - in frustrating me, that is. PA's cable has memory that irritates me and M4's cable just tangles into a royal mess almost every time I take it out of the case. That said, let's first revisit PA (with stock bi-flanges).

Though 'from memory' comparisons are fundamentally flawed, I'll do it anyways as I've spent some time with both M1 and M2 not too long ago.

PA has a slightly distant presentation where the whole sound stage feels shifted by a few rows. It has a very slight U-shaped response, but the emphasis is on the word 'slight'. So, next to M4, it even feels balanced. Even from my first encounter with PA, I remember that it had a better sense of space than M1 and M2. It separates the elements at the left and right corners better and also may have a slight advantage of better imaging compared to M1 and M2. What it lacks is a bit of clarity and resolution which pushes it behind M1 in the pecking order.

The bass of PA is nicely extended. While it does not rumble greatly (only gently), it has a bit more sub-bass presence than M1 or M2. The mid-bass is slightly bumped and the quantity feels like it could beat M1 and M3, but not M2. But, it must be said that the quantity is nowhere close to 'bass heavy' and it does not stray into the mid range. It carries more impact than what I remember with M1, but it does not have the clarity or texture of the latter, so it's kind of a trade-off between the two.

The mid range retains the familiar M-series character of being smooth, non-sibilant and easy on the ears. But, it is slightly less textured when compared to M1 or M2 making it sound less fluid compared to it's peers. M1 and M2 are not only (relatively) more forward in the mid range, but they produce details well.

The treble, like the bass, has better quantity than M1 and is a bit more forward than both M1 and M2. But, it lacks the full extension or resolution and sounds a tad grainy at times.

Moving on to M4, it has a strong V-shape and hence has enhanced quantity at both ends. That coupled with an intimate presentation makes everything upfront. Better treble presence improves the clarity and the overall sound has a slightly better texture and resolution compared to PA. The presentation style leans towards aggressive (but I would never call it aggressive stand-alone) next to the laid-back presentation of PA.

M4 owns the PA at both ends. Both bass and treble are forward with M4, have much more quantity, resolution and clarity. The bass has better impact and far better sub-bass presence. The treble has better sparkle and details. But, taken stand-alone, they are not of the highest quality which is to be expected given it's price range. The mid range has better texture than PA. Though it is recessed, the whole presentation of M4 is more intimate next to PA, which makes it easy to glean the details. The sound stage width of PA is better, but depth perception in M4 is better. In terms of overall stage size, M4 is actually smaller, but it is hardly felt due to the 'fun' V-shape it has. Separation on M4 is a tad better as PA tends to sound a little blended at times.

Overall, I'd say that for someone upgrading from a PL11 or ES18, moving to PA or M1 is an easy transition. M4 due to it's upfront, V-shaped response, may not appeal to everybody and may need time getting used to. But, personally, I can live with M4 much more easily than a PA (or even M1/M2/M3).

ok after listening to Fischer Audio Fa-003, still it's on my head  while writing this post. All I can say one thing for sure without a doubt that these are Neutral Champ. Amazing soundstage being a closed CAN. Am I finding them better than the EPH-100? I feel so though I have not heard EPH-100 much but still I am feeling but I am unsure.

Yes! you like them better than EPH-100. So, let that stay with me :p

Did you do the "mandatory" 250 hour burn-in before agreeing with keanex? ;)

It's damn difficult to do anything with so much stuff around me - EPH100, Pro Alpha, M4, A161P, FI-BA-SB, J3 + (at least) 8 more pending comparisons to go! It's only going to get more difficult next week.....
